Author Harlan Coben exploded onto the literary scene in 1995 with "Deal Breaker," the first book in the long-running Myron Bolitar novel series. Myron Bolitar was a former basketball player and current sports agent who became embroiled in a string of sports-related murder investigations. There are 16 Myron Bolitar books and three in the YA Micket Bolitar spin-off series. Coben has also authored 19 standalone thrillers, and it's entirely likely you idly picked up one of his books at the airport. His most recent novel was the 2023 thriller "I Will Find You."
Coben is also notable for being the source of multiple new Netflix TV shows. A 2018 article by Deadline noted that Corben signed a massive plum deal with the streaming service to adapt 14 of his titles into either movies or TV series, to be filmed all over the world and made by various international studios. It’s here, the newest Netflix thriller adapted from one of Harlan Coben’s ludicrously twist-packed, secret-filled crime mystery novels. This one comes adapted by Danny Brocklehurst with the same UK team that made The Five, Safe, The Stranger and Stay Close, and once again stars Richard Armitage in a central role.
Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.
Find out more about the cast of this one below, and happy binge-watching!

As she strolls comfortably toward multiple Oscar nominations for “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig is on track to set several Academy Awards records tied to her age, gender and the movie’s financial success. In terms of more general achievements, perhaps the most impressive one in her reach is becoming the first filmmaker to have all of her initial three solo features contend for Best Picture. Over the past 95 years, many directors have had shots at earning that distinction and a few have come remarkably close, but none of their chances have been quite as strong as hers.
Since Gerwig did not produce her first two independently-directed films – “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women” (2019) – and, per academy rules, cannot officially share in a “Barbie” Best Picture nomination due to her screen credit of “executive producer” (rather than the qualifying “producer” or “produced by”), she does not and will not soon have any bids...

Guy Pearce has recently wrapped production on “Inside,” an Australian crime thriller and coming of age drama film. The picture is the debut feature of Charles Williams, whose short film “All These Creatures” won the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
The story sees after a young man transferred from juvenile to adult prison, where he is taken under the wing of both Australia’s most despised criminal, and a soon-to-be-a-paroled inmate. A paternal triangle grows between them, suggesting that even the worst of men may have a little bit of good inside them — that will be their eventual undoing.
The cast is headed by Pearce, Cosmo Jarvis and newcomer Vincent Miller. Supporting actors include Toby Wallace, Tara Morice, Chloé Hayden (“Heartbreak High”) and Michael Logo (“Colin From Accounts”).

Variety has learned exclusively that Veena Sud will head up the series, which will be set in the world of the so-called Millennium novels originally written by Stieg Larsson.

Once again, Neeson’s fictional family is danger – this time on an explosive school run – but the action is driverless
A bomb disposal thriller should usually be good for some cheesy entertainment. But this feels generic and unexcitingly acted, a by-the-numbers bit of work, remade from the 2015 Spanish movie El Desconocido, or The Stranger, starring Luis Tosar, which was itself borrowing heavily from such high-concept Hollywood jeopardy items as Speed and Phone Booth. And putting Liam Neeson in this new version is all too clearly designed to appeal to another customer fanbase, that of Neeson’s kidnap drama franchise Taken.
Neeson is in every sense phoning it in as Matt Turner, a financial trader in Berlin, living in a flashy house, working too hard, worried that clients are getting cross due to the risky investment advice he’s been giving lately and hardly realising his marriage is crumbling due to his neglect.

Bangladesh is a vital presence at the 2023 Busan International Film Festival with three films in competition and a film at the Asian Project Market.
The current wave of Bangladeshi cinema was heralded by Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s “Television,” which closed Busan in 2012. The festival has subsequently screened almost every major work emerging from the country.
Farooki’s latest effort “Something Like an Autobiography” plays in the festival’s Jiseok competition. Feature debutants Biplob Sarkar’s “The Stranger” and Iqbal H. Chowdhury’s “The Wrestlers” are in the New Currents competition for first or second features. Robiul Alam Robi’s “Suraiya” is selected for the Apm.
Like all cinema that successfully transcends national borders, this latest crop from Bangladesh is rooted in the local ethos but features themes that are universal. “Something Like an Autobiography,” for example, deals with themes of pregnancy alongside societal and political pressures on celebrities. “The Wrestler” marries sport,...

One of the tiniest lived-in details in Bangladeshi writer-director Biplob Sarkar’s debut feature — which is really a cluster of tiny, lived-in details — is the sheet of adhesive bindis that Kajal (a delightfully natural Ehan Rashid) snaffles from his mother’s dressing table. The bindis, or as they’re known in these parts, teeps, are worn by Banglasdeshi women of all creeds and religions, but along with an orangey-pink lipstick also taken from the dresser, for Kajal they represent more than mere cosmetic adornment. Instead they’re a gateway for Kajal’s inchoate gender expression, the potency of which is belied by the simplicity and smallness of that little red dot between the eyes. “The Stranger” functions in much the same way: a colorful speck of a movie that somehow contains a whole portrait, like a miniature one might find painted on a grain of rice.

Moving (무빙), a South Korean drama about superpowered teens and the superpowered parents trying to protect them, made headlines last month when it became Disney+ and Hulu’s most-watched K-drama of all time. In Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, Moving has become the streamers’ most-watched series, full stop — yes, it beat out series that hail from the Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universes. The series is not only distributed but also produced by Disney, and the media conglomerate invested a hefty chunk of change to make the multi-generational superhero saga fly.

Moving is quickly becoming a fan favorite on Disney+. The Korean superhero drama series is based on a popular webtoon of the same name by Kang Full, he is also the creator behind the Disney+ adaptation. Directed by Park In-je and Park Younseo, Moving is filled with action, teen drama, and heartwrenching moments that will keep your eyes glued to the screen.
Moving tells the story of three high super-powered school students, who inherited their powers from their parents. While they try to hide their powers their parents try to make sure that other people don’t use them for their powers. But all of their efforts are in vain because a very dangerous fight is just ahead of them.

R.I.P. Quibi, again.
It seems even the Roku Channel is not free from The Great Streaming Purge of the 2020s. According to a report in Variety, over 35 notable Roku Original shows are to be removed from the streaming service sometime in the near future. This comes after multiple other services have removed shows and movies, many of them high-profile releases, from their feeds in order to cut costs. HBO Max — now merely Max — infamously removed a lot of their original films back in August of 2022, while multiple TV shows and movies were taken off of Hulu and Disney+ in May of 2023 for similar reasons. One might assume that a free, ad-supported service like the Roku Channel would be free from the caprices of the streaming market, but that is not so. The line of Roku Originals will be brought to an end.
Roku Originals, some may recall, were not Roku originals.

Spanning 10 tracks, 152 was produced by Tushar Apte and mixed by Neal Avron. In a statement, the band said, “Our hope is that you’re able to find a little bit of yourself in this new collection of songs, because you’re not alone, and neither are we.”
“You would think after 20 years, we knew what each other is going to do,” said lead vocalist Adam Lazzara. “But there were so many times making this record where I heard the initial idea and thought I knew where it would go, but then I was super surprised.” Drummer Mark O’Connell added, “When we’re writing songs, the one thing we ask ourselves [is], ‘Is it capable of making people feel something?...

The Stranger is described as a coming-of-age story navigating the journey of a family in which the young son grapples with questions about his gender identity. The Wrestler, a co-production between Bangladesh and Canada, tells the story of an elderly man from a fishing village who challenges a wrestling champion to combat.

Swapping a book character from male to female for a screen adaptation is nothing new. It’s usually done to even out the gender balance or modernise an older story. Not though, in the case of Harlan Coben’s Shelter, an eight-part thriller now streaming weekly after its first three episodes arrived on Prime Video on August 18.
In the book Shelter, by aforementioned hit-machine Harlan Coben, the lead character Mickey Bolitar is the nephew of Coben’s most famous character – Myron Bolitar. A talented high school basketball player who became a sports agent to the rich and powerful, Myron is the lead in an 11-novel series, which spawned a three-book Young Adult spin-off about his nephew Mickey.
Because every streamer wants a bite of the profitable Harlan Coben cherry, the author has multiple adaptation deals. His main contract is currently with Netflix, which has already adapted several of his (mostly...

With war fast approaching, Winton visited a recently annexed Prague and witnessed first-hand Jewish refugee families with little to no shelter and food. He immediately realized it was a race against time to see how many children he and his friends could rescue before time ran out. Fifty years later, in 1988, Winton is haunted by the fate of...

The ‘Coming Soon to TV’ shelf in your local bookshop will be sagging under the weight of this lot – the thrillers, sci-fi stories, crime novels and non-fiction currently being adapted for television. If you prefer to read ahead before your imagination is sullied by the small screen version, then here’s where to start, from Apple TV+’s adaptation of 1950s-set revenge comedy Lessons in Chemistry and psychological thriller The Crowded Room, to Prime Video’s new Neil Gaiman show Anansi Boys and rumoured Kay Scarpetta series, via Netflix’s true-life opioid drama Painkiller, Itvx/MGM+ historical adventure series The Winter King and many more. Many many more.

What’s with old people and the paranormal? In movies and movies hence, we have seen how old men and women have been used as conduits not by the devil, ghosts, or souls but by filmmakers to establish fear. The Stranger has only this much relatability, and the rest is just outright absurd. But thanks to people like Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter, making sense of the absurd is something we’ve all taken a liking to, haven’t we? So, with this in mind, let’s talk about The Stranger.

Seven Kings Must Die concludes the story of Uhtred Ragnarsson, a decades-long frenemy of the English crown since the days of King Alfred the Great. It’s largely adapted from Bernard Cornwell’s final instalment in his Saxon Stories books, War Lord, along with elements of the two previous novels, and tracks the contested succession to the royal throne following the death of King Edward.
A significant time jump has taken place since the final moments of The Last Kingdom season five, during which Aelswith, Hild and Eadith have all passed or moved away. A core of male characters remains though, including Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric, Father Pyrlig and Aldhelm. They’re joined by brand new characters, as below.
Laurie Davidson as Ingilmundr
The biggest addition to The Last Kingdom’s regular cast is Aethelstan’s new trusted advisor, Ingilmundr, a Danish-born Christian who shows a powerful influence over King Edward’s successor.

This four-part Netflix series isn’t the first time that Josephine Hart’s 1991 novel Damage has been adapted for screen. In 1992, celebrated French director Louis Malle made a feature film of Hart’s book that welcomed Jeremy Irons, Juliette Binoche, Miranda Richardson, Peter Stomare and Rupert Graves to this exploration of erotic obsession. The film earned Richardson a Best Actress nomination among many others at that year’s Academy Awards.
This serialised version was created by playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm with writer Benji Walters, and directed by Ordinary Love, Good Vibrations and Cherry Bomb‘s Lisa Barrow D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn, updates the action to the modern day and remoulds the characters somewhat. Richard Armitage plays successful surgeon Will, husband to Ingrid and father to Jay and Sally, while Charlie Muphy’s character Anna Barton is expanded to explore her response to the fallout of the story’s scandalous central affair.

This Lord of the Rings article contains spoilers for The Rings of Power.
The Rings of Power was always going to be a controversial topic among Lord of the Rings fans, especially for the way it set out to expand the story of Middle-earth beyond J.R.R. Tolkien‘s original work. While the bones of the Amazon series’ story come from The Appendices of The Lord of the Rings books, the show also introduces whole new characters and events as well as origin stories for established heroes and villains that don’t exist in the beloved writer’s legendarium. Some viewers have dismissed The Rings of Power as Tolkien “fan fiction,” while others defend the series as a great way to dive into unexplored corners of Middle-earth history, the tumultuous Second Age in this case.
