Movies That Make Me Think of Halloween

Recycled Film Experience! I wrote some of this in advance -- years in advance in fact -- to free up time to enjoy this costume crazed holiday. I originally published this list in 2005, but I've tweaked it some. Plus, not all of you were around in 2005. Herewith, the top 12 movies that remind me of Halloween. It's a top ten list and it's not even Tuesday. I'm so generous.
12 The Batman franchise (1989-2008)
In 1997 I went out Halloween clubbing as the Uma version of Poison Ivy. Whenever you dress up as a movie character the year the movie comes out, you'll have competition. There was another Poison Ivy there but I buried her, I promise. I had the horns and all the details, see. It was the longest I ever spent getting ready for Halloween (which is saying something): glue guns, orange wigs, fake foliage, you name it. I don't try as hard anymore.

Casting (Typecasting) Troubles? Ellen Page and Michael Cera need a hit

There is, apparently, some bit of a problem on the acting horizons for two Canadian talents - Ellen Page and Michael Cera.
- - -
- - -
A report from The Star, the online version of the largest Canadian daily newspaper, explains why:
Ellen Page and Michael Cera, the Juno duo who until recently were our brightest new cinematic lights from sea to shining sea, and also all points south of the 49th Parallel.
Halifax's Page parlayed her precociously preggers title teen in Jason Reitman's hit film into a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars, a rare Canuck achievement. Brampton's Cera came to Juno already a star, having already lit up screens here and stateside in the super-popular movie Superbad and the cult TV fave Arrested Development.

It gives me no pleasure to report this, or to baldly state the obvious reason why Cera and Page are currently floundering: typecasting.

Bill Pullman: Under Surveillance

Bill Pullman may not be the first person who comes to mind when you think “genre veteran.” But the actor who is perhaps best known for such populist entertainments as Independence Day and While You Were Sleeping has taken a number of cinematic trips to the dark side, most notably under the guidance of the Lynch family. Having starred in David’s 1997 mind-teaser Lost Highway, he now can be seen as the lead in daughter Jennifer’s Surveillance, out this week on DVD and Blu-ray from Magnolia Home Entertainment’s Magnet Pictures banner.
Pullman stars in the film with Julia Ormond as FBI agents Hallaway and Anderson, who arrive at a rural police station to investigate a grisly roadside massacre. A trio of badly shaken witnesses survived the bloody incident, and the particulars of what happened gradually come together through their dramatized recollections as they are separately interviewed. This is probably the most difficult Top 10 rankings I ever did - more difficult than the updated Top 10 for the actors. I have to find a balance wherein I give proper credit to certain actresses who have already established themselves and are already well-known by fans and ordinary moviegoers vis-a-vis those who have yet to boast of a growing list of followers, but has shown such unforgettable and powerful acting in some very impressive recently released films. At the end of the day, what really matters is that - at this moment - it was her name and her performances that moviegoers and critics alike are talking and raving about.

Josh Lucas Invokes Hitchcock to Describe New Film

Here's a movie pitch for you, straight from Josh Lucas, the lucky bastard dating Rachel McAdams. He describes his upcoming movie, Peacock as "what would happen if [Norman Bates] had basically stayed alive and married himself." Wow. Ok.
Bates did stay alive; three sequels starring Anthony Perkins were made in the 1980s, after the Bates character was released from an institution. Still, the premise of Peacock is a little whacked. And if it's Cillian Murphy playing the guy with split personalities, I'm pretty much buying a ticket right now.
Throw in Ellen Page, Bill Pullman, and Susan Sarandon, and all I can say is I wonder why I haven't paid more attention to this until now.

Movie star Josh Lucas feels like a member of Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins' family after shooting back-to-back films with the couple and their kids.
The actor worked with Sarandon on new movie Peacock and she suggested he star in her partner's new film Possible Side Effects.
Lucas says, "It's about a pharmaceutical family and Tim and Susan's kids are in the film. Eva (Amurri) plays my daughter and Miles (Robbins) plays my son.
"It was kind of odd because we really looked like a family."

Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard to join 'Inception'

Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard and Cillian Murphy are in negotiations to joing Leonardo DiCaprio in Christopher Nolan's upcoming sci-fi action flick "Inception."
Plot details are strictly kept under wraps, but according to the Hollywood Reporter, the project is described as a film set within "the architecture of the mind."
The trade also revealed DiCaprio would play CEO-type character, with Cotillard starring as his wife. Page could star as a college grad. It's not exactly the most compelling information, but I guess it's better than nothing.
Nolan plans to shoot the thing this summer and release "Inception" July 16, 2010. Besides "The Dark Knight," Nolan also directed "The Prestige," "Batman Begins" and "Memento."
Now, Page can next be seen in "Whip It!," while Cotillard will soon return to the big screen in "Public Enemies." Cillian Murphy's upcoming projects include "Peacock" and "Hippie Hippie Shake."

Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page are apparently in talks to join Leonard DiCaprio in "Inception," a film whose synopsis is being kept tightly under wraps. It's a contemporary science fiction actioner which is apparently set within the architecture of the mind.
Nolan will helm and produces the film alongside Emma Thomas. Production will start this summer for a release sometime in 2010. Nolan reteams with Murphy after working with him on "Batman Begins" and "Dark Knight." Murphy recently completed "Perrier's Bounty" and "Peacock." Cotillard is with Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Channing Tatum in "Public Enemies" and Rob Marshall's "Nine." Page was with Murphy in "Peacock" as well as starring in Drew Barrymore's "Whip It!"

Christopher Nolan's follow-up to The Dark Knight is a still-under-wraps sci-fi action film called Inception - but who needs plot details when you've got one of the best directors in Hollywood involved? And he's lining up a rather spiffy cast to fill out his line-up: Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page are all in talks to star. The film is described as a "contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind", which sounds right up Nolan's alley: sort of The Prestige meets Memento meets Batman Begins only different, eh?There's no telling yet what roles the three stars will play, but as hot young things go Nolan couldn't do much better. Cotillard's coming off the back of last year's Oscar win and recently working with Michael Mann and Johnny Depp on Public Enemies, while Murphy and Page just worked together on Peacock. The film goes into production for release next year,

Julia Roberts has yet to be surpassed.
Back in September of last year I asked Who's the Next Big Male Movie Star? At the time Robert Pattinson Fever had spread all over the Internet and the conversation resulted in a wasted experiment as commenters weren't able to have a real debate. However, a few people did ask for a similar feature for the females and I have finally gotten around to putting it together. With the males the name I was looking at in comparison was Will "Guaranteed Box-Office Gold" Smith. With the females I was unable to come up with a name that lives up to the career Julia Roberts put together and she remained my muse.
When Pretty Woman came out in 1990 Julia was 22-years-old and had just starred in and won a Golden Globe for Steel Magnolias. Over the following nine years she worked her way into

Pretty soon we will learn whether Lisa Kudrow is more than a Friend.
The star is returning to her NBC roots to learn more about her own roots, adapting the BBC's unlikely hit genealogical documentary series Who Do You Think You Are? for the Peacock.
Kudrow will be the first celeb to track down various branches of her family tree. Others joining the quest for genealogic answers will be Sarah Jessica Parker and Susan Sarandon.
"The most striking thing about the show is the realization of how connected we all are," says Kudrow (presumably speaking in the metaphorical, not the Sjp-and-i-are-cousins, sense).
