Jessie Reyez depicts the harrowing experience of losing one’s love to deportation in her potent new song “Far Away.” The track will appear on her forthcoming debut studio album via Fmly/Island, which is due out next year.
In the Peter Huang-directed clip, Reyez dances alone while her partner is seen separately, giving a frightened stare into the camera. As the lyrics unfold, Reyez tells the story of lasting love while her partner waits for his papers. The visual flashes back to the couple happily slow dancing before...

Five years ago, one of the most famously troubled productions in movie history was colorfully detailed in the documentary “Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Doctor Moreau.” Its major takeaway was the cruel injustice of a director being removed from a project that had been his baby from inception. If you wondered what Stanley might’ve got up to had that experience not traumatized him out of the business (some documentaries and shorts aside) for more than a quarter-century, there’s finally an answer of sorts in “Color Out of Space.”
His first big-screen narrative feature since 1992 returns to the berserk mixes of external fantasy and personal idiosyncrasy that made pre-“Island” efforts “Hardware” and “Dust Devil” cult favorites. It’s based on a much-adapted H.P. Lovecraft story, and like most prior versions, takes considerable liberties with the original material. Entertaining but uneven, the...

As of this writing “Jesus Christ Superstar” is predicted to win this year’s Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album with 82/25 odds. It’s a live recording of NBC’s Emmy-winning telecast, unlike the other nominees, which are studio recordings of traditional stage productions. Could that help or hurt “Superstar”?
This isn’t the show’s first time at the Grammys. The original concept album was nominated for Album of the Year back in 1972, but lost to Carole King for her second studio album, “Tapestry.” The very next year the Broadway cast recording was nominated for Album of the Year, but it lost too; Grammy voters picked “The Concert for Bangladesh” by George Harrison and Friends instead. So the iconic rock opera has a major Grammy Iou, especially considering how its creators — composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice — went on to win multiple Grammys themselves.

Coming into the evening with a lucky 13 nominations, it lost just two races: Best Film Editing to “American Animals” and Best Sound to “You Were Never Really Here,” which also took home the prize for Best Music. “The Favourite” had two nominees in Best Supporting Actress: Rachel Weisz won over, among others, co-star Emma Stone. (Scroll down to see the complete list of winners and read the full report on the BIFAs)

Louis Bloom will succeed Darcus Beese as president of Island Records U.K., parent company Universal Music Group announced Wednesday. Bloom, who has worked at Island for 16 years, most recently as head of A&R, takes over the role with immediate effect.
It was announced last week that Beese would move from the U.K. to New York to take over as president of Island Records in the U.S. from David Massey, who is moving to Sony Music. Beese, who had headed the U.K. operation for five years, officially takes on his new role July 1.
Bloom said he wants Island to be “the No. 1 label and home culture and creativity.”
While at Island, Bloom has signed major, multi-platinum-selling artists, including Mumford & Sons, Ben Howard and Hozier, as well as The Feeling, Goyte, and John Newman. Most recently he has signed Catfish and the Bottlemen (via Communion) and Jp Cooper.

Nominations for the 2018 Tony Awards will be announced at 8:30 a.m. Et on Tuesday, May 1. After a slew of last-minute eligibility decisions from the administration committee that oversees these top theater honors, time is running out to update your Tony predictions. There are two kinds of people in this world: those who love porgs and those whose empty hearts know no joy. The best part of Rian Johnson’s “The Last Jedi,” the puffin-like creatures have stirred debate since the moment they were first glimpsed in the film’s trailer; they’ve also inspired curiosity, with many wondering how they came to be.
In a new interview with CinemaBlend, sound designer Ren Kylce (whose name is suspiciously similar to Kylo Ren) offers some details about their distinctive squawk and the animals that helped create it.

Though he’s The Last Man on Earth, Will Forte (maybe?) has some friends.
Appearing at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, the Saturday Night Live alum announced that Mary Steenburgen (30 Rock) will pop up on Fox’s post-apocalyptic comedy, which bows March 1.
Steenburgen thus joins January Jones (Mad Men), Kristen Schaal (30 Rock), Cleopatra Coleman (Neighbours) and Mel Rodriguez (Getting On) on the guest-starring cast — though this doesn’t mean that Forte’s character, Phil Miller, is not [see show title]. Instead, some or all will appear in flashbacks or via other narrative devices. (Alluding to another castaway-themed program, executive producer Phil Lord promised with a laugh,...

At the age of 24 in 2010, Colin was honored with an Award of Distinction for his contribution to the Arts by The Belfast Metropolitan College. Colin attended Integrated College Dungannon and during his third year he won the 'Denis Rooney Associates' Cup for being the best overall student of that academic year. In 2004, after he received a National Diploma in Performing Arts and studying at Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education, he went on to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland situated in Glasgow and graduated in 2007. Chicago – Nothing jars an audience quite like the sudden appearance of a fearsome apparition in a dimly lit room. Even hokey thrillers like William Castle’s “House on Haunted Hill” still manage to make viewers jump from their seats by using this reliable horror standby. “The Woman in Black” has one such moment, but it is surrounded by a murky sea of grim tedium.
This is a sleepy little haunted house picture that proves to be the worst possible post-“Potter” role for Daniel Radcliffe, who was straining to distance himself from the boy wizard even while completing the phenomenally successful franchise. His stage work has given him ample opportunities to take bold risks. His singing and dancing in Broadway’s “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” raised nearly as many eyebrows as his nude scene in London’s “Equus” revival. Yet his screen roles outside of Hogwarts...

This summer marked what was very likely the last time that actor, Daniel Radcliffe would play the character he's best known for by fans all over the globe, Harry Potter. The series came to a close with 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2,' and from its end comes a new chapter in the career of Radcliffe. The next time you see him in theaters will be when he's being haunted by 'The Woman in Black.' The ghastly tale looks like one of those unabashedly serious horrors that go without a single moment of levity. View the brand-new teaser trailer for it below, courtesy of Yahoo, but first, the very straight-to-the-point synopsis. It reads: "A young lawyer (Radcliffe) travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals." Along with Radcliffe in the film is Ciarán Hinds, who...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Becoming Chaz Trailer Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato are the film equivalent of sociological documentarians. If ever there was a duo who have damn well...

(Apologies for the lateness. My editor was enjoying the sunshine too much to get this up sooner)
British cinema seems to sit squarely within one of three categories these days: the mushy romantic comedy, the low budget quirky horror or the hard-hitting social drama. Island slots somewhere between the latter two to offer a confused viewing experience that simultaneously appears to be a social drama whilst evoking notions of horror. It’s hard to say whether it works – Island will keep your attention until the end, but it will likely leave you feeling a little disappointed as it fails to follow through on any of the hints it gives you.
From the opening monologue – “When I was 29, I decided to kill my mother.” – Island gives the impression that it’s going to be revenge driven, psychological thriller. However, over the course of the narrative this is...

Arthur (12A)
(Jason Winer, 2011, Us) Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Greta Gerwig, Jennifer Garner, Luis Guzmán. 110 mins
You can see what they were thinking: "it worked for one difficult-to-market English comic, so let's try it again". But somewhere between the moon and New York City this romcom seems to have lost some of its spirit and spontaneity. There are some snappy lines and funny moments, but Brand's overprivileged wastrel is nowhere near as cuddly as Dudley Moore's was – or as convincingly drunk. Sometimes, hair of the dog isn't the answer.
How I Ended This Summer (12A)
(Aleksei Popogrebsky, 2010, Rus) Grigory Dobrygin, Sergei Puskepalis. 130 mins
Spare and distinctive two-hander set in remote Arctic Russia, where the endless daylight, monotonous work, some terrible news and a touch of radiation exacerbate generational differences to deadly levels.
Pina (U)
(Wim Wenders, 2011, Ger/Fra/UK) 104 mins

Meek's Cutoff (PG)
(Kelly Reichardt, 2010, Us) Michelle Williams, Bruce Greenwood, Shirley Henderson, Paul Dano, Will Patton. 102 mins
Take away the epic music, the widescreen vistas, the male chauvinism, the gunfights, and just about every other Hollywood western convention, and you get this sparse, haunting evocation of American pioneering – which is probably far closer to how the west was really won. This group of settlers breaks away from the Oregon trail only to wander through an uncharted desert limbo in a trance of thirst, tension and uncertainty. Putting women's roles and the hardships of frontier survival very much to the fore, the result is a western unlike any other.
Your Highness (15)
(David Gordon Green, 2011, Us) Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman. 102 mins
A medieval stoner-com, dude! Which sounds like a great idea if you're baked, but not if you remember how Year One, that caveman stoner-com, turned out.
Scream 4 (15)

Animated Exeter, Exeter
Last year it was Exeter Castle, this year the animation festival spills over on to the city's best-known landmark, with a son-et-lumière piece projected on to Exeter Cathedral (graphics by artists Tundra* and music from Portishead's Beth Gibbons). Free exhibitions and events include a helpful workshop on how to animate vegetables, while guest of honour Joanna Quinn looks back on her distinctive body of work. Plus, of course, over 140 films, from shorts compilations (like the return of Spike And Mike's "Sick And Twisted" programme) to recent features The Illusionist and A Town Called Panic.
Various venues, Mon to 26 Feb
Glasgow Film Festival, Glasgow
Perhaps Edinburgh should start looking over its shoulder at "the fastest-growing film event in the UK". But Scotland's big enough for the both of them, for now. This one's almost too big for itself, as evidenced by the mini-festivals within it: a promising music and film festival,...

Merlin, starring Colin Morgan, Bradley James and Anthony Head, returns for a third season on Syfy beginning Friday, January 7, at 10Pm (Et/Pt).
Few shows have had the sort of rough history that Merlin has had to survive, including the simple lack of attention, and fewer still are as fun and wild. Somewhere in the general category of such things as Hercules, Robin Hood, and Legend of the Seeker, Merlin finds us tagging along with the earlier versions of our Camelot legends. Uther is alive, and has outlawed magic, and Merlin is Arthur's squire-come-houseboy who has to somehow perfect his abilities without being able to use them openly. We have to get from there to the days that rise to mythic stature (so I guess we know who isn't going to die), all the while doing battle with a variety of beasts and baddies.
