When Dr. Herbert runs out of fuel, he locates a "gas" station and uses his food coupons for by 3 gallons of gas. The Dodge pick up he is driving is a diesel (as can be seen obviously in a later scene, right after his son is taken). Gas wouldn't do him much good.

Major Kramer's uniform is a Naval officers uniform with enlisted service stripes and the sleeves ripped off. There are no majors in the Navy.
