Disney is one of the leading studios in Hollywood, having built its success upon a series of blockbuster animated films back in the day. However, in recent years the studio’s money-spinning and cultural juggernaut IPs have received flack from critics and audiences alike, particularly when it comes to the live-action re-imaginings of its biggest animated hits.
Disney’s Aladdin co-director John Musker talked about the studio’s recent struggles.

Disney loves a live-action remake. The House of Mouse has discovered that instead of coming up with new ideas they can simply remake their classic animated flicks into live action. The results have been pretty darn profitable, and the studio shows no signs of stopping — there are currently live-action remakes of "Moana" and "Lilo and Stitch" on the way. One of their successful live-action remakes was the 2019 take on "Aladdin," helmed by — believe it or not — Guy Ritchie. The film was a smash, hauling in over $1 billion worldwide and going on to become the ninth highest-grossing film of 2019.

Signature Entertainment has acquired the U.K. and Irish rights to the family adventure animation film Butterfly Tale from sales company Pink Parrot. Its voice cast features Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black, She-Hulk), Mena Massoud (Aladdin, Star Wars: Ahsoka) and Tristan D. Lalla (Long Shot).
Butterfly Tale tells the story of Patrick (voiced by Massoud), “a gutsy and loveable, yet inept one-winged butterfly, who stows away in a milkweed trailer in order to be part of the migration journey of a lifetime,” according to a plot description. “Along with his best friend, a goofy caterpillar named Marty, and Jennifer (Maslany), a butterfly who is afraid of heights, Patrick will become an unlikely hero.”
The movie, produced by Marie-Claude Beauchamp (The Legend of Sarila) and Emely Christians (All Creatures Big and Small), was directed by Sophie Roy (Double Dribble) from a script written by Heidi Foss (Pup Academy) and Lienne Sawatsky (The Guava Juice Show...

As another Guy Ritchie movie hits theaters this weekend, “The Covenant,” Hollywood finds the director in the most prolific chapter of his career. Ritchie’s done five films in four years, with another, “The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” filming now. And he has more on the way, too, being attached to “Aladdin 2,” Disney‘s live-action “Hercules” remake, and helming a couple of episodes of Netflix‘s “The Gentlemen” TV Series.

Just days after it was reported that director Guy Ritchie was kicking around ideas for a sequel to his 2019 live adaptation of the classic Disney animated film Aladdin, the film’s star gives a somber update to those who enjoyed the live-action version and were anticipating a sequel. However, the movie’s star, Mena Massoud isn’t optimistic about the movie’s chances of being made. He made he feelings known on Twitter when he was asked if we were still getting an Aladdin 2. Massoud replied bluntly, saying it’s “Very unlikely at this point.”

Disney is on a streak of releasing a slew of live-action adaptations of their original animated movies that already had large fanbases. They have mostly been successful, especially Aladdin, with a take of $1 billion at the box office, but none of the adaptations have ventured into sequels.

After Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin made over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, it came as no surprise that the studio quickly began developing a sequel. But four years later, we’ve heard very little about the project moving forward. Collider recently sat down with Guy Ritchie and asked him if he will be returning to direct Aladdin 2.
“I’d very much like to,” Guy Ritchie said. “I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed that experience. It was a great experience. That whole Disney thing, as you can imagine, is such a professional outfit. Just from that perspective, it was so much fun. I would very much like to, we’ll wait and see.” The director added that they’ve “been kicking some ideas around for some time now, but it’d be great to do, it would be great to go back there.“

Nothing kicks the week off like a good rumor. According to The Sun, Will Smith is reprising his role as the Genie in Disney’s Aladdin 2. The live-action sequel would be Smith’s first role since he slapped the taste out of Chris Rock’s mouth at the Oscars. Ever since “the Slap,” Smith stepped back from the spotlight to reflect on his actions, learn from the incident, and re-position himself for a Hollywood comeback. According to IMDb, Andrea Berloff and John Gatins will write the Guy Ritchie-directed sequel, inspired by the One Thousand And One Nights series of Middle Eastern folk tales. If all goes according to plan, cameras could begin rolling by the end of the year for a 2025 release.

Hollywood star Will Smith is reportedly set to return for ‘Aladdin’ sequel, reprising his role as Genie from the 2019 Disney musical fantasy film. Based on the ‘One Thousand And One Nights’ series of Middle Eastern folk tales, the script for the upcoming movie is being written. Details are still scarce, but the hope reportedly is that filming could begin at the end of this year, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“This would be one of the first movies Will has shot since the Oscars slap and it is quite surprising, given that it will be for a kids’ film,” a so-called movie insider says of Smith’s acting return since his controversial behavior at the 2022 Academy Awards.
“He has done a lot of work on himself and the consensus is that it will all be very much in the past by the time the movie is released.”

Although some have questioned Disney’s ongoing goal of giving every one of their animated movies the live-action treatment, it’s hard to deny that that audience isn’t there. Several of the live-action Disney movies have made over 1 billion at the worldwide box office, including Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin. The studio quickly got the ball rolling on Aladdin 2, but it’s been a while since we heard any updates on the sequel.
Mena Massoud, who played Aladdin in the live-action movie, offered an update on Aladdin 2 while speaking with Variety, and unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there’s much to say. “I don’t know that there is movement,” Massoud said. “There was a change with the writers, and they are working on a brand new draft. “Snatch” and “Sherlock Holmes” director Guy Ritchie picked up the Gold Yusr Honorary Award for his contribution to cinema at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah. “They’re a funny thing, awards,” Ritchie tells Variety the morning after the awards ceremony that opened the festival. “It’s best to be grateful about them. Methinks.”
Ritchie first burst onto the British cinema scene with the Cool Britannia crime caper “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” (1998) almost a quarter of a century ago. It was a debut that was helped along by some high-powered fans, Ritchie told a sold out audience at his In Conversation masterclass, telling how A-listers like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt championed the film. Pitt went on to appear in his next film “Snatch” (2000) as an incomprehensible bare-knuckle fighter, a decision – Ritchie explained to the audience – made because they were worried about Pitt’s accent.

Has there ever been a more anomalous pairing than Guy Ritchie of all directors doing Disney‘s live-action “Aladdin” film? The 2019 movie is an outlier in Ritchie’s filmography, but yes, he indeed directed it. Disney is set to continue to explore a whole new world with a sequel to the 2019 live-action version of Aladdin. Guy Ritchie is also planning to step back into the director’s seat for the next chapter. When The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the British director at the Red Sea Film Fest, he was asked about the possibility of having the newly controversial Will Smith reprising his role as the Genie.

Madelaine Petsch, the star of The CW’s hit teen drama “Riverdale,” and Mena Massoud, who brought Aladdin to life in Disney’s blockbuster remake, instantly clicked when they met first time as guests on the talk show “A Little Late With Lilly Singh.”

This is something that a lot of people should have been able to see coming since not only does Disney tend to take a while with sequels, unless they happen to be important to mainline for the sake of keeping the story on track, but Aladdin and Aladdin 2 did differ a bit in animated form. If the sequel is anything like the direct-to-video animated version, The Return of Jafar, then adapting the script won’t be a huge issue. Instead, it’s likely that working around the busy schedules of the actors will be one factor, as will the reality that

Typically, Guy Ritchie, who is a very prolific director by today’s standards, would normally take about two or three years between features. However, in 2019, he released “Aladdin,” and followed that up in early 2020 with “The Gentlemen.” According to reports, he has already wrapped up production on his next film, “Wrath of Man,” and is deep into production on his next film, “Five Eyes.” Add to that the upcoming TV adaptation of “The Gentlemen” and “Aladdin 2,” whenever that gets going, and you can see that Ritchie is really going full speed ahead in his career.

As the live-action remake of the highest-grossing 2D animation in history, bumper box office business was expected of The Lion King when it hit theaters last year. Jon Favreau’s retread certainly didn’t disappoint on that front, either, raking in over $1.6 billion globally to becoming the seventh biggest film of all-time.
The movie was a painstakingly faithful adaptation of the 1994 original, for better or worse. The Lion King was stunning to look at, no doubt, but the characters, plot, dialogue, score and songs had all been seen before and done much better, giving the end product a hollow feel. As a technical achievement it was incredible, but from a storytelling perspective, it left a lot to be desired.
A sequel was officially confirmed yesterday, with Moonlight‘s Barry Jenkins stepping in to replace Favreau, who will presumably be busy in a galaxy far, far away for the foreseeable future.

After James Cameron’s Avatar became the highest-grossing movie in history in part due to the groundbreaking 3D technology, the rest of Hollywood jumped on the bandwagon by adding the extra dimension to their own blockbusters. However, the vast majority of them were hastily slapped with a shoddy post-conversion as the studios focused more on the additional ticket price rather than the technology itself.
One of the first major releases to follow in Avatar‘s wake was Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, starring Johnny Depp, which surprised everyone when it ended up as just the sixth movie to ever make over a billion dollars at the box office despite the critical reception being tepid at best.
