Over the last decade or so, Marvel has had a knack for snagging independent filmmakers with a lot of buzz, critical acclaim, and innovative creative voices to join their stable. Before James Gunn was at the helm of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy, he was the guy who got his start writing "Tromeo and Juliet" for Lloyd Kaufman. And he's not alone. Scott Derrickson, Jon Watts, Taika Waititi, Cate Shoreland, Destin Daniel Cretton, Chloé Zhao, Nia DaCosta, and so many others were still stars on the rise when Marvel came calling.
Fan reactions are typically divided with one camp worried this marks the end of their independent visions in favor of corporate-driven storytelling, while others are thrilled to see directors they love getting one hell of a paycheck. Theoretically, this should give them the creative freedom to make whatever film they want next, like the director's version of what...

A half hour into Barnaby Clay’s debut narrative feature, “The Seeding,” Scott Haze drops to his knees and begs, “Will someone just tell me What is going on?” It’s an uncharacteristically funny beat coming from a character deadass named Wyndham Stone, a photographer who explicitly shops at Brooks Brothers and boasts all the personality of half-off wrinkle guard. But the unintentionally self-aware line is an early pop of entertainment in this otherwise maddening experiment in atmospheric dread. “What Is going on?” you’ll wonder ad nauseam — only to be forced-fed an answer less satisfying than a hunk of moldy bread. At least the table setting works.
Shot in a rust-red canyon in Utah, this meditation on domestic despair begins with an arresting image; a young child, no more than two-years-old, toddles through the desert alone munching on a human finger. It’s a stomach-churning cold open for the...

The Seeding certainly has one of the most memorable opening shots in recent history, a filthy toddler wanders across the desert gnawing on what looks like a teething biscuit. Until the camera pulls in, and we see that it’s a human finger.
Photographer Wyndham Stone has hiked into the desert to get shots of an eclipse. Hiking back out, he sees a somewhat older boy who is apparently lost, however after trying to help him, Stone finds himself lost and alone. He doesn’t find the way back to his car, but he does find a crater with a house in it, and a ladder leading down to it. Not recognizing an obvious trap when he sees it, he climbs down and finds the house has an occupant, a woman named Alina who offers him so dubious...

In an interview with Film Comment in 2020, actress/writer/director Amy Seimetz said that she used her ample salary from making the remake of "Pet Sematary" to make her feature directorial debut "She Dies Tomorrow," a dark fable about the nature of despair. "She Dies Tomorrow" was one of the unlucky 2020 features whose potential success was hindered by Covid-19-related theater closures, resulting in a combined box office take of less than $400,000 from a release on only 24 screens.
Not that a film like "She Dies Tomorrow" was a threat to, say, a Marvel film. Seimetz constructed an assertively sad meditation full of weeping, doubt, death, and fear. It imagines a world where depression is contagious and how humans' natural propensity toward utter emotional emptiness ultimately informs and colors every aspect of our lives.
The premise seems simple: Kate Lyn Sheil plays a woman named Amy who has just purchased a...

The Seeding, written and directed by Barnaby Clay, takes audiences on a slow-burn journey into a desolate desert canyon where nightmares come to life. With minimal dialogue and a limited cast, this atmospheric horror flick thrives on subtlety and implications of evil rather than relying on jump scares or explicit gore. While it may not fully capitalize on its untapped potential, The Seeding offers an eerie exploration of relationship dynamics within a secluded and mysterious setting.
While out photographing a solar eclipse, Stone (played by Scott Haze of What Josiah Saw) stumbles upon a lost boy looking for his parents. After hours of walking away from his car and any sign of civilization, Stone too becomes lost and separated from the boy. Desperate for help and a place to rest, Stone is relieved when he finds a woman living off-the-grid in a tiny cottage home at the base of a canyon…...

HBO’s upcoming series The Idol has gone through at least one major creative overhaul since it was announced, with co-creator Amy Seimetz leaving the show in April 2022. Euphoria’s Sam Levinson and Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd) then took over as creators for the series, reshaping it to fit their vision and the version of the show set to premiere June 4, 2023.
We don’t know much about the series, other than HBO’s official logline that reads “After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?”

HBO hit the jackpot with "Euphoria," the increasingly successful teen drama capable of crashing HBO Max and dominating the social media zeitgeist for weeks on end. The fervor around the show has been so absolute that it was no surprise when HBO doubled down on working with series creator Sam Levinson. Along with Abel Tesfaye (aka musical artist The Weeknd), Levinson has now created "The Idol," a new series expected to debut sometime in 2023. From the onset, "The Idol" presented itself with the hard edge and glamour of "Euphoria," but traded high school hallways for a world of pop stars and cults. It sounded like the kind of intense drama that would capitalize on Levinson's "Euphoria" success, but recent reports reveal that there's trouble in paradise.
The first hiccup (made public) was the departure of director Amy Seimetz (of "The Girlfriend Experience" and "She Dies Tomorrow"), who exited the series last April; at the time,...

For the past several months, HBO has been relentlessly hyping up “The Idol,” a limited series from “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson and R&b giant The Weeknd. But over the last year, the show has faced very public production issues — and it turns out that those first reports may have only scratched the surface of tensions on set.
A new Rolling Stone report published Wednesday goes behind the scenes of the music industry drama, with 13 anonymous sources from production describing a chaotic and tense set, where shooting went behind schedule and scripts finished late.
“The creators and producers of ‘The Idol’ have been working hard to create one of HBO’s most exciting and provocative original programs. The initial approach on the show and production of the early episodes, unfortunately, did not meet HBO standards so we chose to make a change,” HBO told IndieWire in a statement. “Throughout the process,...

Building a bridge between American independent filmmakers and the European market is the goal of U.S. in Progress, which is hosted each year during the American Film Festival (Aff) in Wrocław, Poland.
The event presents a carefully curated selection of roughly half a dozen American indie titles in the final stages of production to sales agents, distributors and festival programmers. This year’s edition takes place Nov. 9 – 11.
Along with offering a showcase of those films for European buyers, U.S. in Progress each year invites leading Polish post-production companies to the event, with Fixafilm, Orka Studio, Black Photon, Xanf and Soundflower Studio this year each offering a 10,000 in-kind award. That’s alongside a newly added 50,000 cash award being handed out by the Polish Film Institute, to be spent by the winning filmmaker on post-production, image, sound and/or VFX in Poland.
It’s an attempt to underscore some of the opportunities available to U.

It might seem counterintuitive to make the case for filmmaking as a career when so much about the profession can sound like a charity case. The money is in TV, and its so-called Golden Age provides golden opportunities. I may advocate for the success of original cinematic feats like “The Northman,” but will just as easily admit that “Atlanta” and “Barry” are among the most satisfying cultural achievements to come out this month.
Still, cautionary tales abound. This week, news broke that Amy Seimetz “exited” as the director of “The Idol,” the new HBO series co-produced and starring Abel Tesfaye, otherwise known as The Weeknd. As usual, there’s more to this story, and it speaks volumes about how the layers of creative control differ in TV.
I’m told that Seimetz had already directed about four episodes of the six-episode series and adapted the show to her loose, exploratory approach.

Exclusive: Katie Aselton (The Morning Show) has signed on to star alongside Bill Burr, Bobby Cannavale and Bokeem Woodbine in the comedy Old Dads, which Burr wrote and is directing for Miramax and his company All Things Comedy.
The comedian’s feature directorial debut centers on a middle-aged father, Jack (Burr), and his two best friends (Cannavale and Woodbine), who after selling their company to a millennial, find themselves out of step and behind the times as they hilariously struggle to navigate a changing world of culture, career and fatherhood.
Aselton is playing Jack’s wife, Leah. Burr and Ben Tishler penned the script and are producing alongside Bill Block, Monica Levinson and Mike Bertolina, with production underway in Los Angeles.

When Japanese-Brazilian filmmaker Edson Oda arrived at Sundance 2020 with his feature directorial debut “Nine Days,” an immersive film concerning isolation and mortality, he didn’t know how closely our reality would soon match his fable.
A few weeks following the festival, when the world closed down and the terrors of the pandemic took hold, many movies were seen as reflective of pandemic-era anxieties, from “Palm Springs” to “She Dies Tomorrow.” Yet only “Nine Days” spoke to two aspects of the cultural zeitgeist — quarantine and Black Lives Matter — with such striking prescience.
The film, which premiered at Sundance in 2020, comes out at a time of tremendous fragility for many Americans. And Oda’s work will provide them with a potent opportunity to process this moment of unprecedented psychological uneasiness.
“It’s been a time for self-discovery for a lot of people,” Oda said in an interview this month. “Everything they went through,...

This review of “How It Ends” was first published after its January 2021 premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
The cheeriest movie ever made about Armageddon, “How It Ends” started as a way to be productive during the pandemic and ended up as a cameo-studded lark that also manages to be a touching examination of the regrets we carry around. Writer-directors Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones keep things light on this scenic tour of Los Angeles by foot, but they also manage to bump up against some big ideas without letting their comic tone get too blue.
The film premiered in January at the virtual Sundance Film Festival, where Wein and Lister-Jones have spent a fair amount of time in the past, and it’s an endearing Sundance bonbon: quirky but not annoying, charming but not cloying, slight but in a good way. Wein and Lister-Jones, who occasionally direct indies together...

Indie moviemaker Amy Seimetz pulls off the ultimate heist in “No Sudden Move.”
Though relatively unknown to most viewers, Seimetz slyly steals the star-studded film out from under the likes of Don Cheadle and Benicio del Toro with her portrayal of a housewife who gets caught up in a dangerous plot to steal a priceless document.
The Steven Soderbergh film is now streaming on HBO Max, and Seimetz is nothing short of a revelation. Her character, Mary Wertz, is kidnapped by a group of small-time crooks who want to force her philandering, auto executive husband (David Harbour) to break into his office safe in order to give them some trade secrets. Just as she finds herself and her children staring down the barrel of a gun, Mary also discovers that her marriage is a sham when one of the robbers casually notes that her husband is sleeping with his boss’ secretary.

Utopia has acquired worldwide rights to David Gutnik’s “Materna” ahead of the film’s in-person debut at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.
The movie looks at four women, whose lives intersect during an incident on a New York City subway. Kate Lyn Sheil (“She Dies Tomorrow”), Jade Eshete (“Billions”), Lindsay Burdge (“Black Bear”), Assol Abdullina (“First Snow”), Michael Chernus (“Orange Is the New Black”), Rory Culkin (“Castle Rock”) and Sturgill Simpson (the upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon”) all star. Abdullina and Eshete co-wrote the screenplay with Gutnik.
According to the official logline: “‘Materna’ follows the journeys of four New York women who are isolated by city life, separated by class, politics, race and religion, and yet bound by a shared hunger for identity and connection. With their futures at stake, the characters’ lives are upended by a fateful encounter underground, where their stories of personal transformation become a battle for survival.

The 36th Independent Spirit Awards aired Thursday, April 22 on IFC in a virtual ceremony hosted by Melissa Villaseñor (“Saturday Night Live”). (Read our live blog to see how it all went down.) By the end of the evening, “Nomadland” had emerged as the biggest winner with four trophies: Best Picture, Best Director (Chloe Zhao), Best Film Editing (Zhao) and Best Cinematography (Joshua James Richards). With the Oscars just three days away, can we expect “Nomadland” to prevail there as well in all of these crucial categories?

Spirit Awards 2021 Winners List: ‘Nomadland,’ ‘I May Destroy You,’ Riz Ahmed, Carey Mulligan Win Big
“Mank” is the big leader at the 2021 Oscars with 10 nominations, but that wasn’t the case at the 36th Film Independent Spirit Awards. The nomination leader at this ceremony was Eliza Hittman’s acclaimed “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which the Academy shut out from the Oscars. The same goes for other beloved Spirit Award nominees like “First Cow,” “Miss Juneteenth,” and “The Assistant.” In other words, the Indie Spirit Awards were a breath of fresh air in this elongated awards season where underdog indie contenders finally get their due in the spotlight.
“Minari” also preformed strong at the Indie Spirits, earning six nominations to match its six Oscar nominations. Fellow Oscar nominees “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Nomadland” each picked up five Spirit Award nominations. Netflix was the most nominated studio with 16 nominations, followed by Focus Features with 10 and A24 with 9.

The 36th Film Independent Spirit Awards are set to take place this week as a welcome reprieve to this elongated Oscar season. Unlike the Academy Awards, where David Fincher’s “Mank” reigns supreme with 10 nominations, the 2021 Indie Spirit Awards are dominated by Eliza Hittman’s “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which was shut out of the Oscar nominations. “Never Rarely” boasts seven Spirit Award nominations this year, including Best Feature and Best Director.

Theater closures, festival cancellations, and endless release delays throughout 2020 made the state of the 2021 Oscar race unusual, but now here we are with less than two weeks to go before nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards are revealed. The Golden Globes have already crowned “Nomadland” the best dramatic feature of the year, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards have bestowed multiple nominations on the likes of “Minari” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” So which movies will score big on Oscar nominations morning? While the industry awaits that answer, now is the time to catch up on the films most deserving of Oscar buzz from the last over-12 months of eligibility. At the very least, playing catch up on the best films eligible for oscars will leave you excited when “Nomadland” earns multiple nominations and rightfully outraged when films like “Swallow” and “Babyteeth” are left out.

March brings breezes loud and shrill/stirs the dancing daffodil. Bit of poetry for you there. What Sara Coleridge fails to mention is that March also brings season seven of Brooklyn Nine-Nine to Netflix UK, more weekly episodes of Riverdale season five, a brand new sci-fi series from the creators of Misfits, a new film directed by Amy Poehler and a host of cool animated series.
The One (pictured above) is an eight-part British series created by Howard Overman about a near-future world in which a DNA test can track down your perfect partner. It’s adapted from John Marrs’ novel of the same name, and yes, has a strikingly similar premise to US anthology sci-fi Soulmates.
