When determining what films have any chance of winning the Oscar for Best Picture, or even being in contention for it, there recently has been a returned focus toward the delicate balance of art and commerce. As theatrical exhibition continues to rebuild and reform in wake of the global pandemic, the last two Best Picture winners, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Oppenheimer,” were celebrated not just for being inventive, but for proving that audiences were still willing to come out in droves for a film without a colon or numeral toward the end of the title.

This article contains likely spoilers for Dune: Part Three as well as the books Dune Messiah and Children of Dune.
You are not prepared for what is to come. These are the words of promise, or prophecy, in Anya Taylor-Joy’s lone scene in Dune: Part Two. Whether the sequence is a kind of psychic chat room occurring between Paul “Muad’Dib” Atreides (Timothée Chalemet) and his unborn sister, Alia, or an actual vision of a conversation they will have in the future is obscure. Either way, the meeting seems otherworldly, not least of all because Paul and Alia are conversing on a beach. On Arrakis.
“Paul, you are not prepared for what is to come,” Alia warns. “You’ll now learn the truth about our family, and it will hurt you to the core.”

Zendaya isn’t "confident enough" to make her directorial debut at the moment. The 27-year-old actress stars in and serves as an executive producer on her new movie ‘Challengers’ but has admitted she isn’t ready to step behind the camera yet because she is still "learning" how to be a competent filmmaker.Speaking to the New York Times newspaper, Zendaya said: "I love being on set because it is not just creatively stimulating, but it's one of the few places where I feel free."Whatever that thing in my brain is where it's overly critical and self-conscious, that is the one place where I can be spontaneous and exist for the purpose of just creating something with other people and feel no guilt about it. But I'm not at the place where I'm quite confident enough to step into directing."Zendaya – who had been due to helm an episode...

To mark Alien Day, we head back to the late 1970s to see how Hr Giger designed the Space Jockey – and its strange fate after the film’s premiere…
In the early hours of Tuesday, the 29th May 1979, someone killed the Space Jockey. Burned it alive, perhaps with a blowtorch even something more mundane like a match or a cigarette. The crime occurred four days after the premiere of Alien at Hollywood’s Grauman’s Egyptian Theater, and was reported on by at least one outlet at the time: sci-fi magazine, Starlog.
“The Los Angeles opening of Alien was marked by misfortune when a miniature version of the film’s ‘starpilot’ was destroyed with fire,” the news story ran, garbling the Space Jockey’s name somewhat. “It was set ablaze by vandals just hours after being placed on display in the forecourt of Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre. Luca Guadagnino’s tennis relationship drama “Challengers” (Amazon MGM) opens Friday amidst chatter that it represents the rarest of films — a wide-release American sex sizzler, an erotically charged story with young actors with sexual impulses central to its plot.
The marketing forebears for “Challengers” are akin to movies that we’ve not seen in a long time like “Carnal Knowledge,” “Body Heat,” “Don’t Look Now,” and “Fatal Attraction.” These films, where sex can be sweaty and dangerous, were elevated by big stars who dared to play off their images. Other examples include Kevin Costner (“No Way Out”), Debra Winger (“An Officer and a Gentleman”), Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver (“The Year of Living Dangerously”), Jane Fonda (“Klute”), and Warren Beatty.
In the “Challengers” press tour, Zendaya (also a producer here) — with six of her previous seven live-action theatrical releases having domestic grosses of $100 million or more — took pains to dispel...

In Challengers, everyone is obsessed with Zendaya. Or, at least, her character Tashi Duncan. “She’s gonna turn her whole family into millionaires,” says Josh O’Connor’s young tennis champ Patrick Zweig, to old friend and doubles partner Art Donaldson (Mike Faist). “She’ll have a fashion line, a foundation.” It’s easy to see why they’re in awe. Duncan is a world-class player, brand ambassador, and the object of both their affections. And with regards to ambition, ability, and enormous success at a young age, they could just as easily be talking about Zendaya herself – a star who, over the past few years, has been executing her own Tashi-esque world domination. So far, she’s moved from kids’ TV star to being a part of some of the biggest movies on the planet. With Challengers, though, she’s taking things to a whole other level.

‘AHS: Delicate’ concludes with one of ‘American Horror Story’s’ most disappointing finales that makes up its own rules, hammers in rote themes, and then turns to dust.
“When are they going to let us tell our own stories?”
A pregnancy brings genetic material together until it culminates into a person and American Horror Story: Delicate also tells a story where its success is dependent upon the season’s ability to tie all of its ideas together into a satisfying finale. Pregnancy stories are all about the ending and one’s enjoyment of “The Auteur” really comes down to what you want out of an American Horror Story finale. Anyone who’s watched the series has been burnt by past finales that are underbaked or overwrought. There are also only so many places that a season finale that begins with Anna in labor can go. New Line came out the winner in a bidding war over Cregger’s next film, a mysterious horror project called Weapons. They signed a first look deal with BoulderLight Pictures, tasking the company with developing high concept genre projects for them. And they gave a greenlight to the thriller Companion, produced by BoulderLight and Cregger. Last May, it was announced that Pedro Pascal of The Last of Us had signed on to star in Weapons – but Pascal had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with his Marvel movie Fantastic Four, so he has since been replaced by Dune, Avengers: Infinity War, and No Country for Old Men star Josh Brolin. Imax more than hit its Q1 numbers with $79 million in revenue last quarter (down 9%) and a solid earnings bump, thanks in large part to its run with Dune: Part 2, a blockbuster amid a slow quarter for big releases. The box office was offset in part by a dip in new Imax systems sales.
The large format exhibitor’s global box office of $261 million marked its third highest grossing Q1 ever, driven by Dune, Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, Imax-exclusive Queen Rock Montreal and local language releases (21% of the total) in a quarter hit by a soft release slate due to the Hollywood strikes.
Adjusted Ebitda of $32 million was about flat from the year before, beating Wall Street consensus. Net income of $3.3 million was up from $2.5 million. The shares have been on a roll recently, including this week, as Wall Street increasingly considers...

This April sees Zendaya cross a milestone it honestly feels like she should have reached ages ago: a legitamite leading role in a theatrical film. The actor has been one of the biggest stars of Generation Z and a much hyped starlet for years now, and yet a quick glance at her Wikipedia page reveals a shockingly short resume.
The Oakland born star’s adult film career, after a childhood in the Disney Channel machine leading sitcoms like “Shake It Up” and “Kc Undercover,” really only started in 2017, with a brief supporting turn in Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Opposite her eventual real-life boyfriend Tom Holland, she only had a scant 10 minutes or so of screentime as the sarcastic teen Mj — hardly a star is born moment, despite what the advertising for the film would have you expect.
Zendaya would reprise her role in future Spider-Man films, and her screentime increased with each installment.

Angelina Jolie’s scrapped “Cleopatra” movie was part romance epic and part “political thriller with assassinations and sex,” according to the movie’s original screenwriter Brian Helgeland. The Oscar-winning actor was set to play the Egyptian queen in a tentpole for Sony Pictures that once courted director David Fincher to helm. It never got off the ground.
“I was the very first writer on ‘Cleopatra’ when it was being developed for Angelina Jolie to star in, which was almost made,” Helgeland said in an interview with Inverse. “It had elements of a political thriller with assassinations and sex, but it’s an epic that’s divided between her love affairs with Caesar and Marc Antony. Lots of true events surprised me when I was writing it.”
“For example, the day Caesar was assassinated — the Ides of March and all that stuff — she was in Rome,” he continued. “They were leaving for Egypt,...

“Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has a lot of options for what he could make next, and one of them could be his long-gestating “Cleopatra” movie based on the Stacy Schiff novel “Cleopatra: A Life” for Sony Pictures.
Before that, however, some may remember the era when filmmaker David Fincher had a version of the movie set up at Paramount, circa 2012, that would have starred Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie (long before the competing Gal Gadot incarnation with Patty Jenkins and Kari Skogland).

Zendaya is pretty much okay doing intimate scenes in films and television series, but what makes her feel uneasy is when people specifically ask her about those scenes. Fans have witnessed kissing and love scenes in many shows, and they have become a very normal part of the business, but when it comes to Zendaya, there is an odd amount of attention.

The actress expressed frustration over this matter and claimed it is part of her work like everybody else. She also said it was not her first time doing these types of scenes.

Long live Queen Cleopatra, even if her film adaptations have been plagued for more than half a century.
After Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s 1963 “Cleopatra” starring Elizabeth Taylor made history as one of the biggest box office disasters ever, a long-gestating adaptation was set with Angelina Jolie attached to star (and directors like David Fincher and Ang Lee being attached at different times). “A Knight’s Tale” and “Man on Fire” writer Brian Helgeland wrote the script, and while the film was “almost made,” it eventually fell by the wayside.
Now, Helgeland is recalling the details of the scrapped project in a new interview with Inverse. “I was the very first writer on ‘Cleopatra’ when it was being developed for Angelina Jolie to star in, which was almost made,” Helgeland said. “It had elements of a political thriller with assassinations and sex, but it’s an epic that’s divided between her...

This June will mark the centenary of the final moments of Kafka, who passed away at a sanatorium in the Austrian town of Kierling. Kviff, which kicks off on June 28, will launch this strand in honor of the writer featuring films such as Soderberg’s noir mystery Kafka, Welles’ The Trial, Scorsese’s After Hours as well as Roman Polanski’s The Tenant among others.

The Karlovy Vary Festival will pay tribute to one of the Czech Republic’s most famous sons with a retrospective of film adaptations of the work of Franz Kafka from some of the greatest names in cinema. To mark the centenary of Kafka’s death, the festival will screen a series of films directly adapted from, or inspired by, the literary master of angst.
The retrospective will include such classics as Orson Welles’s The Trial (1962), Martin Scorsese’s Kafkaesque New York dramedy After Hours (1985) and Federico Fellini’s Intervista; Steven Soderbergh’s Kafka (1991) and its 2021 re-edit Mr. Kneff — both starring Jeremy Irons as a set-upon insurance man and writer — alongside lesser-known adaptations, including Jan Němec’s Metamorphosis, a German TV movie version of Kafka’s famous short story. Other highlights include Ousmane Sembene’s Senegalese feature The Money Order (1968) and Kôji Yamamura’s animated short Franz Kafka’s a Country Doctor (2007).

Superstar Zendaya has been acting professionally since 2010, beginning with the role of Rocky Blue on the Disney teen sitcom "Shake It Up." Her first film gig was playing the voice of Lollipop, a talking pony in "Super Buddies." Zendaya continued to star in teen sitcoms and high school dramas for over a decade, appearing in "Frenemies," several "Spider-Man" movies, the remake of "Zapped," and the acclaimed HBO drama series "Euphoria." It's worth noting that Zendaya was already 23 when she was cast in "Euphoria," forcing the actor to remain in high school for years after her real-life high school graduation in 2015 (figuratively speaking).
The number of times the 27-year-old actor has played an adult is scant. Her first "adult" role came in the 2021 film "Malcolm & Marie," on which she served as executive producer. That same year, Zendaya also played the voice of Lola Bunny in "Space Jam: A New Legacy,...

With two major sci-fi sequels debuting this week to lead the VOD and Netflix charts, the new films also inspired victory laps for the Part Ones of “Dune” and “Rebel Moon.”
“Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.) leads at both iTunes and Fandango, and Netflix’s original “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver” is #1 at the streamer. iTunes packaged the 2021 “Dune: Part One” with its sequel as a $34.99 purchase, and it ranks second there. (“Dune: Part Two” alone rents for 48 hours for $24.99.) “Rebel Moon — Part One” returned at #7 on Netflix’s top 10.
Three other recent theatrical releases also transitioned to home viewing, with curiously different pricing and availability strategies. The top grosser is Neon’s “Immaculate” (approaching $16 million), but it rents for the lowest price: $9.99. “Late Night with the Devil” (IFC) is $14.99, but for that price consumers own it. “In the Land of Saints and Sinners” (Goldwyn) with Liam Neeson is a standard $19.99 rental.

Having already starred in the biggest blockbuster of the year so far, Zendaya is once again set to take the spotlight at the box office with her upcoming sports drama, Challengers. With the film sitting in the high 90s at the Tomatometer as of writing, things are looking promising for the Luca Guadagnino-led romance, which made waves following the threeway kiss in its trailer.

O.K., maybe “close” is a slight exaggeration, but her profile is bigger than her social media presence, and that’s primarily because her resume over the past decade is filled with one banger after another. “The Greatest Showman,” three acclaimed “Mission: Impossible” flicks, a Best Picture nominee in “Dune” and, likely, a second Oscar nominee in her latest blockbuster, “Dune: Part Two.” And now, she’s up for a potential Emmy nomination as Juliette, a “sheriff” in a post-apocalyptic civilization trying to discover the truth behind the gigantic, multi-level “Silo” humanity is confined to.

Having directed the brilliant Arrival (2015), Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and the two Dune movies (2021 and 2024), Denis Villeneuve has already inscribed his name in cinematic history as the acclaimed sci-fi filmmaker.
Here are 7 movies, recommended by the director and available for watching on Prime Video, that guarantee a superior sci-fi experience.
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
It comes as no surprise that this iconic Old Hollywood masterpiece is in Villeneuve’s list. According to his own admission, Kubrick’s epic space opera was his first "cinematic shock" that became his most favorite movie, inspiring him for his own science fiction works.
2. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Steven Spielberg’s classic drama movie affected not only the 1980’s genre’s features, but also the Dune director’s cinema taste, entering him the world of the French New Wave by assembling Francois Truffaut in its cast, and, obviously, his love for sci-fi films.

No matter what you think of the Killing Eve finale, you can't deny that the thriller show is a true gem of the crime genre, and Jodie Comer's character Villanelle definitely played a large role in its success.
Villanelle was unpredictable, dangerous, charismatic and even mesmerizing in the mix of her villainous nature and seemingly "fun" personality. Killing Eve has been over for two years, and now that it landed on Netflix, it may be painful to dive back into the show's universe only to know that it's finished.
Well, Jodie Comer will soon return to our screens in yet another crime drama, so the Killing-Eve-shaped hole in your heart may be filled — even though her role is drastically different this time.
Comer, joined by Austin Butler and Tom Hardy, returns to crime genre in her new movie The Bikeriders that follows a Chicago outlaw motorcycle club. Here, there...

Box office sands continue to flow for “Dune: Part Two,” which is nearing $700 million worldwide.
Director Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic has grossed $276 million in North America and $419 million overseas, bringing its global tally to $695.8 million after eight weeks of release. It’s an impressive benchmark in post-covid times; only five movies in 2023, eight in 2022 and five in 2021 managed to cross the $700 million mark.
At this point, “Dune 2” is the highest-grossing movie of 2024 at the domestic and worldwide box office. Outside of the U.S. and Canada, the biggest markets are the U.K. ($48.8 million), China ($48.5 million), France ($42.6 million), Germany ($39.7 million) and Australia ($22.5 million).
“Dune: Part Two” has far outgrossed its predecessor, 2021’s “Dune,” which generated $433 million while landing simultaneously on HBO Max. The sequel’s impressive staying power is thanks to several factors, including glowing word-of-mouth, an A-list ensemble led by Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, and interest in Imax and other premium formats.

It's the most expensive movie A24 has ever made and is currently the talk of the industry. But what makes it so special?
The plot
The movie is set in the near future where a third term president is in charge of America. During his time in office, the country has become increasingly divided. Now it's a race against time as a group of heroic journalists desperately try to reach the White House before rebel forces do. Will they make it in time? Or is America doomed?
Against this backdrop, the film explores questions such as what it really means to be a US citizen.
It's an action flick, but so much more. Amidst the drama, there are deeper layers of meaning and questions for philosophical cinephiles to ponder. It's also been praised for its stunning scenery, so there really is something for everyone.
Who's starring in it ?
Kirsten Dunst plays Lee Smith,...
