When Kevin Daniels got a call from his agent’s mom that she’d pitched him for the lead role in a film she was producing, it didn’t take much for him to say “yes.”
“We had a zoom meeting and we kind of laughed and told some jokes and they were like, ‘Hey, you want to come down to Savannah?’ and I was like, ‘I like Savannah. That sounds nice,’” Daniels tells The Hollywood Reporter.
The film was Not Another Church Movie, a spoof comedy of Tyler Perry’s Madea series, written, directed and produced by Johnny Mack (Real Husbands of Hollywood), which is set to hit theaters on May 10. In it, Daniels, stars as the hardworking Taylor Pherry, a man given a mission directly from God (Jamie Foxx) to write a story about his dysfunctional family to save billionaire talk show host Hoprah Windfall’s plummeting TV ratings.

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

Eighteen years ago, Tyler Perry brought his DIY play to the big screen. Released in 2005, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” chronicles one beleaguered woman’s journey to healing and self-discovery after being betrayed by her philandering husband. The film features all the classical elements of Perry productions. It’s set in a predominantly Black area of the South, there are theatrical church scenes and plenty of the over-the-top histrionics extracted straight from his plays. But more importantly, there was Madea.
Played by Perry himself, the matriarch emerged as a rambunctious, pistol-packing matriarch who’s as comfortable espousing quirky wisdom as she is ferocious clapbacks. Upon its release, the flick got mixed reviews from critics — but it grossed $50.7 million at the box office, just about 10-times more than its budget. Since then, Perry’s released nine additional Madea films, with the eight that came out in theaters grossing $570 million at the box office,...

And just like that – here comes spring. Amazon Prime‘s list of new releases for April 2021 isn’t as cheery as one would expect from the sunny season. But perhaps that’s by design – you should be outside anyway!
Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

While the first day of spring technically belongs to March, everyone knows that it kicks into high gear in April. To celebrate the changing of the seasons, Hulu is finally bringing back its signature original series for April 2021.
Season 4 of the multiple Emmy award-winning The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on April 28. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen June and her dystopian world. In fact, it’s been so long that our own world decided to endure its own dystopian pandemic in the meantime. Hopefully this series’ return will mean we can keep our political and social collapses on television where they belong.
Aside from The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu isn’t brining much else to the table in terms of originals this month. Thankfully, the one other original that Hulu has in store for April sounds completely righteous. Sasquatch, the latest docuseries from the Duplass brothers producing team, will cover exactly what the title promises.

Gone this award season, along with many other live events, is the annual Governors Awards, scuttled by the pandemic. Instead, the Academy Board of Governors has voted to present two Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Awards for the first time, not only to filmmaker Tyler Perry, but also to the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF). The Oscar statuettes will be presented at the two-month-delayed 93rd Oscars which airs live on ABC and to broadcast outlets worldwide on Sunday, April 25, 2021.
“There has been such widespread generosity in our industry that limiting the Hersholt Humanitarian Award to one recipient, this year in particular, was impossible. So, we are breaking with tradition and giving two awards to honor that spirit,” said Academy President David Rubin in an official statement. “Tyler’s cultural influence extends far beyond his work as a filmmaker. He has quietly and steadily focused on humanitarian and social justice causes from the beginning of his career,...

Tyler Perry and the Motion Picture and Television Fund have been selected by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Board of Governors to both receive Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Awards to be presented at the 93rd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday April 25.
Perry is being honored for his extensive work on humanitarian and social justice causes, while the MPTF will receive the first Hersholt ever awarded to an organization, an act the AMPAS board had to approve on this one time only basis as MPTF heads towards its 100th of “taking care of our own”.

Tyler Perry is entering a new phase — not just in his career as a media mogul who owns a 330-acre studio bearing his name, nor in his tax bracket, after being designated a billionaire by Forbes. Perry, who has consistently stayed above the fray for much of the time he has been a celebrity, is getting political.
“We’ve all been drafted on the worst reality show that’s ever been produced, and none of us have been paid for it,” Perry says. “For the last four and a half years or so, we have been dragged through the wringer, and it is completely exhausting. So many people are exhausted at the division, at the hate, at the pandemic — people are just exhausted and angry and frustrated. And if the people who bring hope [and] positivity give up, then the world has lost its balance.

Introducing the cast of “Tyler Perry’s Assisted Living,” Tyler Perry’s latest comedy for BET.
The series stars Na’im Lynn, J. Anthony Brown, Courtney Nichole, Tayler Buck and Alex Henderson, while longtime Tyler Perry collaborators David and Tamela Mann reprise their roles as Mr. Brown and Cora.
In an exclusive behind the scenes clip, David Mann shares why he’s excited to play Mr. Brown again.
“Having Mr. Brown on a new project is kind of a breath of fresh air for me because it’s somebody new for me to fight with, some new friends,” David Mann says. “And, of course, bringing Cora along is that added bonus. … Mr. Brown was crazy before, but now that he has someone else to take him to the next crazy level, it’s gonna be fun.”
Tamela Mann adds: “Cora is the peacemaker, I’m always – even with Madea and Mr.

When Charles Gregory lost his battle with Covid-19 in early April, Tyler Perry took to social media to pay tribute to the Emmy-nominated hairstylist with whom he’d collaborated since 2006 on projects like “House of Payne” and “Madea Goes to Jail.” It’s why, in reopening Tyler Perry Studios and beginning production on his Bet series “Sistas” on July 8, Perry says he and his team are taking the utmost precautions amid the coronavirus pandemic. “After losing a crew member, it hit home with all of us. It was a wake-up call,” Perry tells Variety.

Charles Gregory, an Emmy-nominated hairstylist who frequently collaborated with Tyler Perry on his films and TV shows, died of complications from Covid-19 on Wednesday.
Gregory shared on social media two weeks earlier that he had tested positive for the virus and was moved into the hospital. His death was mourned by filmmakers like Tyler Perry, Ava DuVernay and Lee Daniels, with whom he was most recently working on Daniels’ film “The United States Vs. Billie Holiday.”
“He was a Brilliant hairstylist and did his Magic,” Daniels said in an Instagram post. “Whenever l complained about anyone’s hair he’d say ‘lemme just slap some grease on it.. it’ll be ok.’ And it was!!! The virus took him today. Please say a prayer for this wonderful man and his family.”

Chicago – Getting the right chemistry in casting a film is crucial in a drama, and the new film “Just Mercy” anchors lead actors Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx with two vital characters actors. Karan Kendrick portrays Millie McMillian, the wife of Foxx’s character, who is on death row. Tim Blake Nelson is Ralph Myers, a key witness.
“Just Mercy” is the based-on-truth story of Walter McMillian (Foxx), an African American man who is accused of a 1990s murder he did not commit. The irony of this accusation is that it takes place in Monroeville, Alabama. This is the hometown of Harper Lee, who set the scenario in her famous book about racial injustice, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” in a town like Monroeville. Enter Bryan Stevenson (Jordan), a fresh out of law school attorney looking to make a difference. With the help of Eva Ansley (Brie Larson), he takes on Walter’s case,...

I must open this review by simply stating the obvious that some critics might be overlooking: we may not be the audience for Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral. I know this because I saw the theater on a Saturday night in a multiplex and a good time was had by many. I’ve been a follower of Perry’s since 2005’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman, the first appearance by Madea in a theatrical release, and I truly believe the ex-stripper peaked around 2009’s Madea Goes To Jail, a work that highlights the racial injustice around mandatory minimum sentences.
In the latest outing, there is one scene that speaks to a very contemporary issue–police use of excessive force–that’s played rather disturbingly for laughs as an aggressive white cop with presumably extensive training expects Tyler Perry’s straight-laced and mild attorney Brian Simmons to follow...

Tyler Perry has spent over 15 years in heavy make-up and padding, doling out tough love as the title character of the “Madea” movies. With “A Madea Family Funeral,” the gun-toting grandmother is going out with a bang. The 11th and final installment in the long-running franchise beat box office expectations when it opened last weekend, generating a solid $27 million when it hit 2,442 North American theaters.
“Family Funeral” may not have racked up the best start in the “Madea” series — that distinction belongs to “Madea Goes to Jail” ($41 million) — but it ranks as the franchise’s second biggest debut in nearly a decade. It’s a rare feat for any franchise to keep cranking out films that are actually making money after so many installments. Tastes change, audiences move on, but Madea seems to have retained her hold on a devoted fanbase. To put the opening weekend of “A Madea Family Funeral” into perspective,...

4th Update, Sunday Am: DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World has won the weekend, as we wrote earlier, thanks to Saturday matinees, which took yesterday to $14.1M, a 119% gain over Friday. This now puts the threequel at a second weekend of $30M, -45%, which is a sign of relief to Dwa, as a second weekend drop that’s more severe than -50% is never good for an animated pic. Hidden World will stand just under $98M and will become the third 2019 release to cross $100M after Uni/Bvi/Blumhouse’s Glass and Stx/Lantern’s The Upside.
Hidden World is also the No. 1 international, No. 1 worldwide, and No. 1 in China, with a total global weekend of $115.4M. Total running Ww is $375.4M, which eclipses the original movie’s total global of $351.8M. My colleague, Nancy Tartaglione, will have more on this. Part 2 remains the highest-grossing installment with $621.5M Ww.

The second weekend of “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” and the debut of “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral” are in a race too close to call for the box office crown, with each estimated to bring in about $25 million.
Should estimates hold, the number will mark a 53% decline for “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” which took in $55 million over its opening weekend. It’s totaled $291 million worldwide, including $74 million Stateside.
“Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral,” which is hitting 2,442 theaters, earned $9.2 million on Friday — above earlier tracking estimates and leading studios to reevaluate their weekend estimate to the $23 million to $25 million range.
The film heralds the end of Tyler Perry’s beloved Madea character, which dates back to his 1999 play “I Can Do Bad All By Myself.” It marks the 11th installment in Lionsgate’s franchise, with “Madea Goes to Jail...

Tyler Perry’s “A Madea Family Funeral” is challenging “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” for the top spot at the domestic box office, early estimates showed on Friday.
The 11th installment of Lionsgate’s Madea franchise is performing at the top end of expectations, with an opening of about $23 million at 2,442 sites on Friday. “How to Train Your Dragon 3” was pegged to finish with about $24 million at 4,296 venues, a 56% decline that would give it a repeat victory at the North American box office and $90 million in its first 10 days.
Fox’s third weekend of “Alita: Battle Angel” is leading the rest of the pack with about $6 million at 3,096 locations. Universal and DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” is heading for a repeat victory at the domestic box office.
The final chapter in the “How to Train Your Dragon” trilogy could add another $27 million to $36 million in its second week of release if it sees a hold similar to its predecessors. With “Captain Marvel” coming out next weekend, most studios are steering clear of releasing any films that could get caught in the Marvel movie’s undertow. The one studio that is putting out a new film this weekend is Lionsgate with “A Madea Family Funeral,” the tenth and final film in Tyler Perry’s long-running “Madea” series.
First imagined by Perry for his 1999 play “I Can Do Bad All By Myself,” Madea was brought to the big screen in 2005 with “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” a film made on a $5.5 million budget that grossed $50 million at the box office. Since then, Madea has been a dependable, low-budget moneymaker for Lionsgate, as the character has grossed a combined $547 million at the domestic box office.
But over the past few years, diminishing returns seem to have set in. The series peaked in 2009 with a $41 million opening and $90 million domestic total for “Madea Goes to Jail,...

Like Werner Herzog and Nicolas Cage working together in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Nobody’s Fool finally offers Tyler Perry and Tiffany Haddish a chance for two uninhibited talents of their craft to work together. It’s a different kind of madness, one with the kind of comic lack of restraint you’d expect–and it doesn’t always work.

Since debuting in 1999, Tyler Perry’s Madea character has appeared in dozens of films, plays, and television appearances. But in 2019, exactly 20 years after audiences first met the tough-talking grandmother, Perry is taking off the makeup and wig once and for all.
The filmmaker will do a farewell stage tour and 2019’s “Tyler Perry’s a Madea Family Funeral” to say goodbye to his iconic character.
“I’m happy to kill that old bitch, I’m tired, man,” Perry said on Bevy Smith’s SiriusXM show “Bevelations” on Monday. “I just don’t want to be her age, playing her.”
He also said on the program that his team finished shooting the film two years ago, but wanted to stagger its release following 2016 and 2017’s Madea Halloween films. Perry also wanted to focus on other projects like “Acrimony,” released earlier this year, and “Nobody’s Fool,” which will be out Nov.

Hey, Big Brother Fans. First, we just want to apologize. We previously ran a supposed leak list of 6 houseguests from a source on Twitter, and it turns out that none of those houseguests are actually any of the people that will be participating in the upcoming Celebrity Big Brother edition. It was a shock to us. The good news is the real cast actually looks a whole lot better than any of these fake leaked houseguests. As promised, CBS and the Big Brother producers finally revealed who will officially be participating on the first ever Celebrity Big Brother edition when it finally debuts on Wednesday night, February 7, 2018 at approximately 7 pm central standard time. They revealed it during the huge 2018 Grammy Awards tonight. There's a total of 11 houseguests to go over here. So, get comfortable. With no further ado, let's get right into this pretty ok sounding houseguest list. The first...

“Custody” is the cliched wedding toast of movies. Actually, it’s the drunken cliched wedding toast of movies, in that it starts by defining the title — “the protective care or guardianship of someone or something,” in case you’re unfamiliar with the lofty legal term — before spiraling wildly off-topic, delving full-on into the lives of the wedding guests and often forgetting why these stories are relevant to the happy couple.
In other words, it’s a mess, and if you’re purely interested in Viola Davis’ involvement, I urge you to skip to the first and only paragraph below staring with “Viola Davis” (or the one ending with “our beloved Vi Vi”).
To continue the wedding analogy, the happy couple at the heart of “Custody” is Sara Diaz (Catalina Sandino Moreno) and her kids. A single mother working at a dry cleaner, Diaz is constantly worried about her kids getting into trouble,...

This is a weekend up ups and downs. Grosses compared to last year are up, and a sleeper success repeated at #1 with Tyler Perry’s return to form, “Boo! A Madea Halloween” (Lionsgate).
Surprisingly, the week brought for the first time in a long while a limited release Indian film. Fox’s production of “Ai Dil Hai Mushkil” took in over $2.1 million in only 307 theaters. Meantime, in only 36 theaters the year’s best-reviewed movie “Moonlight” grossed $900,000.
The next few weeks are among the most crucial of the year, with some hope that fortunes might be improving.
The Top Ten
1. Boo: A Madea Halloween (Lionsgate) Week 2 – Last weekend #1

2. Inferno (Sony) New – Cinemascore: B+; Metacritic: 44; est. budget: $75 million
$15,000,000 in 3,576 theaters; PTA: $4,195; Cumulative: $15,000,000
3. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (Paramount) Week 2 – Last weekend #2

First Tyler Perry swatted away Tom Cruise, and now he’s overpowered Tom Hanks: For the second straight week, “Boo! A Madea Halloween” has topped the box office. The latest franchise entry saw only a 41% drop as it headed into its second weekend, adding $16.6 million to the bottom line. This doesn’t particularly change much of the narrative around ‘Madea Halloween,’ as it’s still on track to finish among the best in the series “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion” ($63 million domestic) and “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection” ($65 million domestic), and possibly overtake them, but still finish behind the all-time topper “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail” ($91 million domestic).

Boo! A Madea Halloween gave the series its best debut in over 7 years, topping the weekend ahead of Tom Cruise starring sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. Boo! A Madea Halloween opened to $28.5 million, the best Madea start since Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail ($41 million) in February 2009. Maybe it was the well […]

This weekend’s openers did not look like standouts on paper. But two star vehicles, Tyler Perry’s “Boo! A Madea Halloween” (Lionsgate) and Tom Cruise’s “Jack Reacher: Never Look Back” (Paramount), both exceeded their expected $20 million openings. The reason? They gave moviegoers, who may be feeling a tad rattled during this tempestuous election season, something familiar and safe.
Add in the middling “Ouija: Origin of Evil” (Universal) and the flop “Keeping Up With the Joneses” (20th Century Fox) and the unusually heavy release schedule (before the must-to-avoid Halloween weekend) reversed recent sliding gross totals. Temporary? We’ll see. But it’s better news for sure.
