- With Uncle Pete in hospital recovering from his suicide attempt, Patty is spending a good deal of time at his bedside. In flashbacks, Patty remembers her family situation and the important role Pete played in protecting her from her hard-drinking and abusive father. The FBI still plan on putting pressure on Pete if and when he comes out of the coma. Pete gets a surprise visit from Patrick, the man he hired to kill Ellen. Arthur Frobisher comes under pressure from the henchman he hired to ransack Ellen and David's apartment. He is concerned that Frobisher's continued cooperation with Patty Hewes will lead him to reveal his role in David's death. In a flash forward to three months in the future, Pete's wife gives Ellen a folder she found with Ellen's name on it.—garykmcd
- Ellen wakes up in the middle of the night to pop a pill. A man asks if she can't sleep. It's David. He tells her the medical reason she's see him, a fancy hallucination. She apologizes. He just wants to know why she hasn't opened her wedding present. He says it's nothing special but she'll know what it means and it'll make her laugh. Her phone rings. He asks if it's Patty. It's the FBI, telling her that Pete tried to kill himself. They don't know if he'll make it. Hallucination David disappears.
Patty sits at Pete's bedside with his wife. She tells him about the "clients" he brought home last night. Patty doesn't know what she means. She shows Patty the "I'm sorry" note.
Cut to a young girl of about eight playing in the leaves. She sees a man going into a house, yelling for his wife. He yells for Pete to get out of his way. Pete's voice says his wife doesn't want to see him, and neither does Patty.
Ellen asks the FBI guys what happened. They're monitoring the situation.
Patty's husband Phil has lunch with Dave, who urges him to invest in UNR. Phil says the deal is a dud, but Dave tells him about the private investors about to pour money in. Dave says Patty's going to lose. Phil says Patty doesn't lose.
Frobisher shows his guru the field where he was shot. The guru says this is a big moment in his healing process. Frobisher talks about how the land changed his life. He wants to build a healing center there and he wants the guru to run it. He envisions where the drumming circle could go. Frobisher has something to show him, the bullet he was shot with. "They had to tweeze that out of my kidney," he says, showing him where they'll bury it.
The guru is skeptical that he's using it as a shortcut to peace. Frobisher says it's his new beginning. The guru gives his blessing.
Pete's wife gets a visit from Patrick, the man Pete told to leave and the one Ellen thinks she killed. She tells him someone ratted on Pete and the government wants information on Patty. He offers her a ride to the store.
Ellen interrupts Patty in her office, where she's sitting contemplatively. Ellen asks about Pete. Patty asks Ellen if she's ever told her about her father. He was complicated but brilliant. One day he picked up and left. That's when Pete stepped in, her mother's screw-up brother. He took care of them. He warned her that this would happen, Patty says. She thinks Pete was protecting her. Ellen asks if he has anything on her. Patty says they're going to wait.
Frobisher meditates at his retreat, but the Bearded Man and Wes interrupt him. Wes tells Frobisher that Ellen visited him in the hospital to decide whether or not to kill him and that Ellen is using Patty's firm to investigate David's murder. They tell him again to drop the lawsuit. There will be consequences if Ellen traces David's death back to them. Frobisher babbles some new age pablum, including that he walks without fear.
Wes meets Ellen on her return to grief therapy. She mentions the gift she hasn't opened yet. She doesn't want to be reminded of the past, she says. Wes interrupts, saying that's not it. The gift is her holding onto him.
Patty and Phil talk about Pete. Then he mentions UNR's influx of capital. Patty remembers Claire's appearance defending a hooker found with an energy trader. He devises formulas speculating on energy futures. Patty realizes Kendrick could be using Finn to manipulate the energy market and get the capital they need. This makes sense to anyone who's seen "Trading Places."
Tom stops the hooker on the street, asking about Finn and Claire Maddox. He tells her that she's let some dangerous people into her life and he wants to help. He gives her his card.
Phil, alone, calls to buy UNR stock through his subsidiary fund to keep it quiet.
Patrick beats up a guy on the street, Mike, one of the dudes who flipped on Pete. He tells Patrick what happened.
Pete lays in the hospital, his wife knits at his side. He wakes up.
The FBI guy drops in to visit, remaking his pitch. Pete gives his answer with a colorful mention of a bed pan.
Finn makes trades on-line while the hooker waits. She asks him what he's doing then mentions the visit she got. Finn says if she's lying to him, she's dead. He tells her not to talk to anyone and apologizes for the death threat before demanding her services.
The Bearded Man visits the guru at the retreat. Guru is stroking a bunny rabbit. As Bearded Man threatens the guru, telling him he's Arthur's original teacher and he has more lessons to impart, the viewer gets very nervous for the fate of the rabbit. Especially after Bearded Man asks to hold it. (After all, things starring Glenn Close don't usually have happy endings for rabbits.) But, message conveyed, he gives the bunny back in tact and leaves.
Patty visits Pete in the hospital, where he tells her the jam he's in.
The guru tells Frobisher about the Bearded Man's visit, telling him whatever the man might do to his physical embodiment, he cannot affect his soul. He tells Frobisher to turn himself in. Frobisher doesn't like his choices.
He calls someone, saying he needs to see them right away.
Cut to Frobisher back in the back seat of an SUV getting bounced on by a hooker. As in the first season, he makes a call when he's done: "I'll do it."
Patty sits at Pete's bedside and flashes back to hearing shouting inside her house as a kid, her mom and dad yelling. Her uncle Pete checks on her.
In the hospital, he wakes up to see her there. The FBI guys and Ellen listen in the van.
Patty asks him why he stuck around when her dad took off. He doesn't know. Patty tells him to give them whatever he needs to.
In the van, Ellen doesn't buy it. "I had one thing on her and she tried to kill me, can you imagine what Pete knows?"
Patty tells him to save himself.
Frobisher tells the Bearded Man he'll drop his suit and give him the same money as before.
The hooker meets with Tom in the park, she's terrified. She tells him Finn has money everywhere, companies hidden in companies. He tells her to find out if Finn knows Kendrick. He offers her money but she tells him she'll let him know what she wants when the time comes.
In the office, Patty calmly tells Tom that Frobisher dropped out of the case, claiming the media attention was interfering with his path to spirituality. It doesn't matter, they got what they needed, dozens of plaintiffs jumping on board.
Patrick visits Pete in the hospital, asking if he's in trouble because of what they did for his boss. Ellen doesn't know the voice, despite having stabbed him in the chest. Pete tries to get him to leave as Ellen leaves the FBI van to see if she can ID him. As Pete tells him to leave for good, Ellen races down the hall and Patty watches kids play on a playground. Patrick squirts a needle into Pete's IV and says good bye. Ellen runs, just missing him as Pete stops breathing.
Patty gets a call. Patrick says "it's me." Ellen calls Patty with the news. She tells Patty. Patrick is talking to Mike, the guy who set Pete up. He says Pete won't be talking to anyone.
Flashback to Patty as a girl talking to Pete, taking her to get some licorice.
Three months later Pete's wife opens files in the closet, labeled by city. She takes photos out. One is of Ellen and Katie on the stoop. Another is of Katie's now-dead dog, who Pete presumably killed. One is labeled with Ellen's name. She gives it to Ellen.
Elsewhere, Ellen talks to her mystery guest in her hotel room, telling them they should be terrified. It's Patty. Patty, is terrified and crying. She tells Ellen it's not who she is. Ellen says she's right, the gun's not even loaded. She puts the gun away and takes out the folder. She hands it to Patty.
The screen goes black and two shots ring out.
