The well-known actor, comedian, TV host and dancer Jaaved Jaaferi spoke about late ‘King of Comedy’ Raju Srivastava. What made him popular was his very earthy and deeply rooted comedy, Jaaferi said.
He said: “I knew Raju because when he started off his career, he was doing small stage shows. At that point I was impressed. He was a simple guy, but his humour was very earthy, very Indian rooted, coming from a small town, but catering to a very wider Indian sensibility. Not only on shows, but wherever he stood among the people, he used to make them laugh.”
Jaaved has been part of several TV shows and movies. He also dubbed animated series like ‘Mickey Mouse’, ‘Goofy’ and ‘Don Karnage’ in Hindi and also hosted award shows like Filmfare and others.
He recalled looking at Raju’s performance in the dance competition series ‘Boogie Woogie’ which was judged by him.

With so many streaming services to choose from, it can often be difficult to find the right one to spend your hard-earned dough on. That being said, Hulu has remained among the most exciting and content-heavy platforms alongside Netflix, really cementing itself as one of the most appealing options out there in recent years thanks to its collection of original content and very, very deep library of licensed films.
Like every other streaming service, they bring us new titles every month and July is looking to be quite a good one. Especially if you’re a horror fan. Admittedly, Hulu has always been pretty reliable when it comes to this particular genre, and that’s a reputation they seem intent to keep, as next month will bring us the likes of The Devil’s Rejects, Freddy vs. Jason, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, House of 1000 Corpses, The Ninth Gate, The House That Jack Built...

Perhaps the most exciting piece of content coming to Hulu in July 2020 is…a movie? Remember those? You would buy a ticket and then go sit in a dark room with other people eating Buncha Crunch. Sounds wild!
Yes, more and more feature films are turning to streaming services for their summer releases. And with their list of new offerings for July 2020, Hulu got itself a big fish. Palm Springs is a Groundhog Day-style comedy starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti as star-crossed lovers forced to live the same day over and over again. It premieres on Hulu on July 10.

With so many streaming services available now, it can often be hard to pick the right one to spend your hard-earned money on. However, Hulu has remained among the most successful and content-heavy platforms alongside Netflix and has only gotten better with age. Like every other streaming service, Hulu updates their content throughout each month, and July is looking to add quite a lot of good stuff.

It's calendar-buying time, so here's my annual boosterism for Blues Images' great calendar/CD combo.
In past years the images and accompanying CD tracks were keyed to Paramount Records advertising. This time out, collector John Tefteller's company changes the focus to the upcoming TV series The American Epic Sessions, www.pbs.org/americanepic/ a triptych to be aired on PBS and the BBC next year. That series takes a look at the vintage recording equipment and artists of the 1920s and early '30s, when producers travelling to the artists, instead vice versa, became possible, resulting in so many vivid 78 Rpm recordings of rural music styles in situ (not just blues, though of course that's what's focused on by Blues Images).
Thus, some of the music on Blues Images' annual CD comes from American Epic engineers, but (though this is not clear) it seems that at least some of the...

Born on August 21, 1904 in Red Bank, New Jersey, William James Basie was taught piano by his mother. At age 20 he moved to Harlem, center of the jazz piano world at that time, and soon began touring with various groups. It was very sad to hear of the passing of Mike Vraney on January 2nd, he was only 56 years old. Anyone who is a true movie geek, film fan, or cinema addict owes him a debt of thanks. With Something Weird Video Vraney made available hundreds, if not thousands of hours of rare, obscure and vintage films, most of which were, well..really weird.
Consider his association with Dave Friedman and H,G. Lewis, Swv put out virtually their entire catalog of films first on VHS and then dvd. Not to mention the films of Harry Novak, Coffin Joe and his bizarre films from South America and many other rare titles that were impossible to see, not so long ago.
Swv put out hundreds of collections of nudie cutie loops, stag films, trailers for drive-in swill and compilations of highway safety and class room instructional films.

Hasee Toh Phasee’s trailer made us go cucking frazy, and then Siddharth Malhotra revealed the ‘love seat’. We knew that wouldn’t be it, as now we have 3 songs of the film raging respectively!
Talking about ‘Drama Queen’ to begin with, this is the song to fall in love with Parineeti’s debut image of Dimple all over again. Anyone remember ‘Jigar Da Tukda’ and Dimple? Yes, yet again Parineeti does a brilliantly energized number and rocks the dance floor with ‘Kukkad’ Siddharth Malhotra complimenting her side. The song is full of energy as they dance to Shreya and Vishal’s brilliant singing!
Next up is ‘Zehnaseeb’, a beautiful romantic track sung by Chinmayi Sripaada and Shekhar Ravijani. The track has catchy music with beautiful lyrics penned down by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
The Punjabi Wedding Song is surely going to be one of the tracks played on loop in all wedding functions this year.

Bette Midler turns 68 on Sunday, and like Tina Turner a few days ago, it’s hard to remember a time when she wasn’t part of our lives, either on the radio or on the big screen. Last year Louis asked for The Greatest Bette Moment, with an emphasis on her film career (and I have to agree with the worship of Big Business, although Outrageous Fortune comes very close “Does the phrase needledick, the bugf*cker mean anything to you?”), but this year let’s focus on her music.
Bette has had a wildly varied musical career, from stage rock to big band to pure pop to standards, and much more. But if you had to pick a favorite from her vast songbook, what would it be? Her first top ten hit “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy?” Her biggest hits “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “From A Distance?” The classic “The Rose?...

Jaaved Jaffrey, the man who changed the face of dancing in India with the TV show “Boogie Woogie” is back with another agenda, “Documentary films”. Just as dancing was in the 90s treated as a mere past time and a hobby, documentary films also do not reach out to mainstream audiences. Jaffrey produced a national award winning documentary “Inshallah Kashmir”, which was banned by the Censor Board because of its sensitive content. When this happened, Jaffery took a decision that can only be taken by a producer with amazing panache, he decided to release the film online. Jaffery says, “The purpose of any documentary is to change the way we perceive life and ask the questions that everyone seems to be afraid to ask. With “Inshallah Kashmir”, we did just that. We presented the truth as it was. And when the film got banned by the censors, as a producer...

Having grown up with dance reality series, Boogie Woogie being the first, harboring a penchant for dance and ensuring I’ve caught every dance flick that’s ever been made, the not-so successful history with Bollywood dance flicks (remember Chance Pe Dance) had made me very wary of reviewing Abcd – AnyBody Can Dance. Being a loyal audience of ‘So you think you can dance’ and the ‘Step Up’ series, although not the biggest fan of the latter, I usually felt that we lacked the finesse that was required of western routines. With Abcd I had two major apprehensions – How much originality would Remo be able to introduce in dance routines that haven’t been done before and secondly having keenly followed the telecasted dance performances of the films protagonists, Dharmesh, Salman, Lauren, would their inexperience in acting cause hiccups in matching the standards set by its Hollywood contemporary?

Last surviving member of the wartime swing trio the Andrews Sisters, whose hits included Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy
Patty Andrews, who has died aged 94, was the lead singer and soloist with the Andrews Sisters. The swinging American trio, comprising Patty and her older siblings, Laverne and Maxene, achieved their greatest success in the 1940s, contributing to the war effort with catchy songs including Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me) and, with Bing Crosby, Don't Fence Me In.
The Andrews Sisters performed at military bases and raised money for war bonds; their hits were sung by the troops and by women working in factories. Patty, Laverne and Maxene accompanied the most popular singers and big bands of the day; enjoyed success not just on radio but also in musical comedy films; and spawned a host of other sister acts – not all of whom were real siblings.

Patty Andrews Returns: Bette Midler revives the ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B’ [See previous post: "Patty Andrews: The Andrews Sisters' Last Surviving Member Has Died."] In 1974, a year after Bette Midler repopularized "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B," Maxene and Patty Andrews reunited for the World War II Broadway musical Over Here. (Laverne Andrews had died in 1967.) With a score by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, and book by Will Holt, Over Here, a mix of rose-colored nostalgia and social criticism, ran for a year. The show, also featuring Sherry Alberoni, Lorene Yarnell, and Anson Williams, ran for seven months.
