Mad Man's Dinner with 2009: The List to End All Lists

Mad Man Dan And His Dinner With 2009

Editor’s Note:  To be honest, I’m not a list guy.  I think they’re trite, unimaginative, and when I look at the other horror sites, their lists are all generally the same.  Sure, there may be some movement between what’s #3 on one site’s list and #4 on another, but must I see the same 10 or 20 flicks from the last year or decade, best or worst, ad nauseam?  So when Mike and I sat down a few weeks back, we agreed not to do the same, humdrum lists.

And then Mad Man Dan came into the picture.

Bringing his uniquely psychotic perspective to the whole idea of lists, then blowing up that idea and subverting it brought a fresh angle to lists.  And so I proudly present Mad Man Dan Price’s Dinner with 2009.  We don’t censor the Mad Man »

The Foywonder's Ten Worst Horror Films of the Decade

23 December 2009 8:31 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The first decade of the new millennium has come to an end, and that means it is now time for film sites all over the web to begin posting their various retrospectives and lists recalling the decade that was. I generally as a rule dislike such lists because they are always so subjective. Then I said screw it and took it upon myself to do one of my own naming the ten worst horror movies of the past decade. Besides, people love bitching on the Internet about lists like this, and who am I to deny readers yet another excuse to get into pointless flame wars over personal opinions.

Of course, this list is just my personal opinion which is not legally binding ... unless Proposition 304 passes. And we all pray that it will.

I set two rules when putting this list together: Only horror movies that received fairly wide theatrical »

Saw VII in 3D Gets a Release Date

10 December 2009 1:42 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Hot off the box office disappointment of Saw VI, Lionsgate is surely eager to cash in on the fast-sinking ship that is the Saw franchise. So eager, in fact, that they’ve announced a release date for their 3D sequel.

According to the studio, Saw VII will open on October 22, 2010, an unsurprising move considering the release history of this series. As you know, Saw V director Dave Hackl will be taking back the reigns for Jigsaw’s 3D adventure which, I have to admit, has me fairly curious.

The last entry was a promising one, and the ending – for the first time – has me interested to see where Marcus and Patrick will swing the series next.

Plus, Mandylor rules.

Adapt This: 'Chew' By John Layman And Rob Guillory

The Story: "Chew: " by John Layman (W) and Rob Guillory (A) – Image Comics

What It's About: If there's one cop who understands the adage "You are what you eat," it's Tony Chu.

As a Cibopath, Chu sees the secret history of everything he eats. Eating an apple, for example, gives him a psychic impression of its life from orchard to shopping cart, meaning he'll know everything from how ripe it was when it was picked to what kind of fertilizer was in the soil it grew from. His gift is his curse, however, as he's often forced to nibble corpses and other taboo ingestibles in order to take a bite out of crime.

It's not long before his ability gets him noticed by the government's top brass who may or may not have his — or anyone else's — best interests at heart.

Lionsgate To Continue Saw Franchise

13 November 2009 5:46 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Drug addicts, doctors, renegade police offices and anyone else that may need “to help themselves” should stay on edge as it looks like the Jigsaw Killer will be on the lamb for the foreseeable future as Lionsgate recently stated that they will continue making the Rube Goldberg horror series Saw “as long as we make money.”

Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns spoke those exact words at the Median and Money conference in New York on Thursday. To further prove his point, the confident Burns states that Dirty Dancing, 20 years after its debut, still sells an average of 2,000 DVDs per day.

While the most recent Saw VI didn’t perform as well as its predecessors, most people are attributing its dramatic drop off to the phenomenon of Paranormal Activity. I know most people say that the Saw stories aren’t good and it’s the same thing over and over, but »

Saw VI didn't exactly live up to box office expectations, but that hasn't stopped Lionsgate from grabbing October 22, 2010 for Saw VII. Saw VII is already in pre-production, with David Hackl returning from Saw V to direct a script from Saw IV, V, and VI screenwriters Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton.

Saw VII will follow the twisted adventures of Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor), with Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) returning in flashbacks. Bell already has an idea of what Jigsaw in 3-D will be like.

"Saw VI" didn't exactly do huge business. The sixth installment has earned $26.6 million since opening on October 23. But when you're talking about a budget of just $11 million, and not having yet counted DVD and Blu-ray sales, what's there to stop them from moving forward with another one? And, according to ShockTillYouDrop.com, that's exactly what Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures are doing, scheduling an October 22, 2010 release for "Saw VII 3D". The next entry is written by returning screenwriters Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton. David Hackl is back in the director's chair. He helmed "Saw V". »

Release Date for 'Saw VII' Announced

After releasing the latest installment of "Saw VI" in October this year, Lionsgate Films has moved forward with another sequel of the thriller film by announcing the release date for "Saw VII". According to Shock Till You Drop, the studio has claimed October 22, 2010 will be the day when the seventh "Saw" movie hits U.S. theaters.

As of late, "Saw VI" producer Mark Burg and co-writer Marcus Dunstan have said that "Saw VII" will be filmed in 3-D. "Saw, just by the way it's shot, lends itself to being a 3-D movie," Berg explained. "We saw a test that somebody did, a minute of Saw transferred from 2-D to 3-D and it looked great. We're not going to transfer VII, but we'll actually shoot it in 3-D. We want to be able to build the sets in a way that takes advantage of depth."

Lionsgate Looking to Lock Down October Date for 'Saw VII'

Lionsgate is looking to lock down an October 22, 2010 release for Saw VII in 3-D, with an official announcement forthcoming. David Hackl returns to the directors chair after getting behind the camera for the disappointing Saw V. Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (Saw IV-viii) are turning in the screenplay once again. While Saw VI was one of the best entires in the franchise, Paramount Pictures' Paranormal Activity caused some problems resulting in a tame $14m opening weekend. In fact, it's total $26m is still less than Saw V's opening weekend. D-yikes. Saw V is considered the worst in the franchise by many of our readers. »

Weekend Report: 'Michael Jackson' Strikes Top Spot

1 November 2009 5:32 PM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

This Is It was all there was as far as new nationwide releases went this Halloween weekend, but it was sufficient to help propel overall business nine percent higher than the same timeframe last year.

Though it may not be commensurate with the raft of pre-release hype surrounding the movie and Michael Jackson's death, This Is It performed exceptionally well for a concert picture or music documentary, charting second only to the opening of the Hannah Montana concert. It raked in an estimated $21.3 million on approximately 5,500 screens at 3,481 sites, ranking as the fifth highest-grossing Halloween debut on record, and has grossed $32.5 million in five and a half days. Add in foreign grosses of an estimated $68.5 million from 98 countries, and This Is It's five-day worldwide haul was $101 million, which exceeded the lifetime tally of the Hannah Montana concert.

While morbid curiosity was part of the appeal, spurred »
