- Over a year earlier, Mary had a tryst with an ex-cop/witness from Chicago, who is now being accused of murdering a cop in Albuquerque, also a former officer from Chicago. Mary and Marshall work to prove his innocence, and find the real killer. Mary discovers, thanks to Brandi, that Raphael had a fling with his physical therapist.—Lynne Boris Johnston
- Chicago, 16 months ago. A cop chases someone and pulls a gun when he catches him. The guy says he doesn't have any drugs on him. The cop, Robert Patrone, solves that problem by forcing him to pick up drugs he throws on the ground. The Patrone's partner shows up, gun drawn. Patrone asks what took him so long. The fact he found out Patrone is a rat. He shoots Patrone. He's about to finish Patrone off when the rat, still kicking, shoots him. The addict, having seen it all, picks up the drugs and runs.
A news voice over explains that Patrone, who lived, testified against other cops in the department in a massive corruption scandal. Robert Patrone enters the program as Robert Eps.
In Albuquerque, 13 months ago. Mary moves into her new house, full of second-guessing and doubt. She has big plans for her three bedrooms, unspoken for. She laments her single status. Jinx comes calling, a mother smelling free space.
At the office, they brief Robert Eps. Marshall notices Eps checking out Mary and tries to warn him off.
At the end of the day, Mary doesn't want to go home to her mother. Marshall doesn't understand why she doesn't like the surprise. Mary explains there are two kinds of surprises, "birthday" and "Pearl Harbor." Guess which one her mom is?
Mary avoids her mother's calls, afraid to go home. Her phone rings again. It's Eps, pathetically asking for a ride. He says he's in a scary neighborhood. She shows up and it's a nice restaurant with food waiting. She chews him out for his pathetic attempt at realizing his "B-movie fantasy" with her and tells him to get the check. As Mary drops him off later with his leftovers, he apologizes, but says his fantasy would have ended with him bragging to all his buddies he ratted out about the hot chick he nailed. Who says romance is dead? She asks him why he did it. He asks her if she wants the complicated answer or the truth. He says he did it because he didn't want to go to jail - the truth. But he thinks they did what they did for the right reasons, to get bad people off the street. He talks about how rules get frustrating after a while and Mary starts to warm. She says it's hard to take him seriously with the tinfoil leftover swan in his lap.
They head up to his apartment, the swan is cast aside for some nookie.
After, Mary's phone rings. It's her mother. She tells Bobby she might have to live there.
Back in present day, Mary talks about craving affection. She tries to talk to Brandi about things with Raph. She suggests they have dinner later and talk about helping Brandi find that direction she wants.
Brandi turns on the TV and they see that a police officer has been killed, one who used to serve in Chicago. Mary tries to reach Eps, but can't. Marshall casts various aspersions on his character.
Brandi goes to see Raphael, having been given permission by Mary. As she's dismissing the chance that anything would ever happen between them and calling Raph a boyscout, he says he slept with his physical therapist.
Brandi slaps him and storms out.
Mary goes to visit Bobby Dershowitz, claiming she wants to help. He's being yelled at by the dead officer's partner, Roxanne. She says she has no information, but Roxanne slams Mary against the wall to get her to talk. In the process Mary's cell phone falls out of her pocket. Mary walks out and Dershowitz copies down the last number she dialed. He finds Robert Eps, who didn't exist before November 2006. Mary comes back for her phone.
Eps calls Mary. He says he was working. Mary tells him to stay put and she's coming over.
Raph goes to talk to Brandi. She partially mad at him for cheating on her sister and partially mad because she considers the woman he slept with to be fat. He says it was a mistake and it happened when Mary wasn't speaking to him and they were sort of broken up. Jinx hears the whole thing from the hallway. Mary visits Eps, who says he didn't even know the guy. She believes him and is about to leave when Marshall calls, seeing that a warrant has been issued for Eps. Mary's on his porch when Dershowitz and the cavalry show up, guns drawn. She is livid with Dershowitz and says she's going to burn him for this later. They take Eps into custody.
He protests his innocence and Mary tells him not to talk. Dershowitz won't let Mary in the cop entrance, saying she'll have to state her official business with him, which he knows she can't do. Stan and Marshall arrive and Stan says he'll take care of it. He gets the Marshals access. Eps accuses Ramirez's partner of first sleeping with him and then killing him. She reacts predictably, lunging at him. Mary lets Dershowitz know she's unimpressed with his police skills.
Marshall and Mary form a game plan to look into the slain cop's life.
Back at home, Brandi is doing Raph's laundy as Mary walks in, ready to talk to her about junior colleges. Brandi dumps the gym bag upside down and a condom falls out. Mary accuses Brandi of sleeping with him. Jinx, joining in, says, "You slept with him too?!" and now Mary thinks her mom and her sister have both had a piece.
They clear that up, but the news that they knew he'd cheated and didn't tell her doesn't sit much better. She tells them to move out.
Mary sleeps on a lawn chair at the office and then goes to speak with the widow Ramirez. She tells Mary that her husband was twice decorated, once here and once in Chicago. She says he didn't have many friends on the force other than his partner, Roxanne. Roxanne walks in and is not thrilled to see Mary. She tells the officers to throw her out. Out on the lawn, Mary shouts an apology and tries to leave, but Roxanne shoves her, then slugs her. It turns into a full on chick fight when Mary puts her in a headlock and then end up rolling around on the grass for the news cameras, but Mary manages to hide her face with her hair.
Marshall critiques her technique later on the news footage as Mary prepares to go make nice with her rumble partner. A simple "you hit like a girl" from Roxanne clears the air. Until she mentions that Mary's having slept with Eps was revealed on the wire tap and that info getting out would be bad for Mary.
Dershowitz has found that the murder weapon came from Chicago and Eps worked a case with Ramirez. Mary confronts Eps, who says that case was high profile and hundreds of cops worked it.
Marshall goes to talk to one of Ramirez's confidential informants in a bar. He asks what Steven was "into" and the CI looks confused. He asks about cases and the CI says that was years ago, that they're friends now. They bonded over hating what meth was doing to "our people." Marshall doesn't understand who their people are until he looks around the all male bar.
Mary and Marshall talk to Roxanne, who suspected, and Dershowitz, who is not pleased to just be learning Ramirez was gay. They go talk to his widow Elizabeth, who plays dumb at first. Then Bobby tells her that all department-issued bullets are marked and so was the one that killed her husband. She keeps up the happy face, claiming he died like a hero.
Mary calls Raph and leaves him a message, saying she can't be mad since they were broken up. But they seem to get in trouble whenever they try to get serious, so maybe they should cool it for a while. She says, as Brandi and Raph listen, that he can see other people - just not her sister.
Brandi overhugs Raph and he tells her he needs some space. She tries to shrug it off, saying it's fine, it's too much high school drama for her. Her cell phone rings, it's her drug dealer boyfriend from back east, telling her the deal for the suitcase full of coke she threw off a bridge is in place and it's time for her to fly back. He professes his love and she says OK.
Mary picks up Eps at the station. She tells him it's time to relocate him since his cover was blown. He says, nah, he's done with the program. He'll take his chances. But he's staying in town.
Meanwhile, Brandi goes fishing, hauling her soggy suitcase out of the river.
