For the first time in modern Vietnam cinema since the establishment of its box office tracking, six local films topped the Vietnam box office in 2023 and combined to capture more than a third of the total box office receipts. This dominating performance by local films is a stark reversal of 2022, when the top local film only placed sixth in the year's overall ranking behind Hollywood and other foreign films.
As 2023 comes to a close, here's a look at the 6 films (in order of box office performance) and the directors who helmed them:
1. Nhà Bà Nữ (The House of No Man)
Directed by Trấn Thành, starring Uyển Ân, Song Luân, and Trấn Thành.
Trấn Thành marks his solo directorial debut with Nhà Bà Nữ (The House of No Man), which unequivocally became the box office champion upon its release during Tết (Lunar New Year). The film stars...

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

Girls' trip - don't text. Gabrielle Union and Tia Mowry seem to be having the ultimate vacation in the South of France, and their mini throwback dance party is the proof. In an Aug. 29 TikTok, the two showed off impressive choreography to Christina Aguilera's iconic 2000s hit "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)," matching each other's energy with Union in an asymmetrical red minidress, and Mowry in bright yellow.
Together, the dynamic duo hit every beat of the ultra nostalgic track, moving in sync and striking dramatic poses at the end. "Established in 1997 South of France Edition," Union captioned the video with her newfound dance partner, referencing the year she met Mowry on the "Sister Sister" set. "Romanticizing life like an early 2000s romcom with my girl," Mowry added on her own TikTok account. She later reposted the video on Instagram for good measure, writing, "Cairo and...

“Sister Sister” by way of A24?
The studio’s first musical film, “Dicks the Musical,” boasts a star-studded cast with killer original songs and a twist on “Parent Trap.”
In the film set to premiere at TIFF this September, two self-obsessed businessmen (writers Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp) discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents, in this riotously funny and depraved musical from comedy icon Larry Charles (“Borat”), also starring Megan Thee Stallion, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, and Bowen Yang as God.
Lead actors Jackson and Sharp wrote the original songs for the film with Karl Saint Lucy; the film is based on Jackson and Sharps’s two-man show from Upright Citizens Brigade in 2014.
Megan Thee Stallion is also tied to an upcoming Netflix movie directed by Josh Safdie and co-starring Adam Sandler. The rapper previously guest-starred on shows like “Good Girls,...

We are thrilled that the Seashell made it to the Super 8 competing on April 21 episode of “The Masked Singer.” We’ve been a fan of hers since she made her debut as part of Group A on the season 5 premiere on March 10. Back then she rocked the house with her cover of “Listen to Your Heart” by Roxette. She returned in Week 3 and impressed with her version of “Confident” by Demi Lovato. And she secured her place in the quarter-final last week with her rendition of “Tell Me Something Good” by Rufus feat. Chaka Khan.
The judges are fans of the Seashell as well. But we don’t think they are right with any of their guesses. The Seashell is not Ashanti, Keke Palmer, Alicia Silverstone or Tamia.
We’ve rewatched all of the Seashell performances as well as her clues videos. Keep reading for “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including...

The Seashell is our personal favorite among the Group A contestants on “The Masked Singer.” She may not have the best voice but she certainly can sell a song. We are thrilled that she has made it to the Group A final that airs on April 14. Seashell faces off against the Robopine and Russian Dolls, who’ve been part of Group A from the start, as well as the Wild Card entry Orca, who first surfaced on March 24.
That episode marked the final appearance of the fifth contender from this group: the Raccoon, who was revealed by guest host Niecy Nash to be “Machete” movie star Danny Trejo. The sixth competitor in Group A, the Snail, was eliminated in the March 10 premiere and turned out to be The Muppets star Kermit the Frog.
In week 1, Seashell had the room rocking with her cover of “Listen to Your Heart” by Roxette.

Tisha Campbell, Essence Atkins, Tahj Mowry, Isaiah Mustafa, and Beth Grant have all been cast in ABC’s multi-cam comedy pilot “Black Don’t Crack,” Variety has learned.
The group joins previously announced series star Sherri Shepherd. The show follows three former sorority sisters who lost touch after college and reunite during a pivotal point in their lives. The show marks a reunion for Mowry and Atkins, who previously starred together in the Disney series “Smart Guy.”
Campbell will play Tasha Marks, described as a hip and fabulous Atlanta restaurateur who starts trends instead of following them. She holds nothing back and is brutally honest (sometimes to a fault) with her friends, but has been avoiding a truth in her own life. She’s achieved the perfect professional life and insists that she needs no man in her life to interfere with the career she’s worked so hard to create.

The five remaining contestants in Group A took to the stage again on episode 3 of season 5 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired Wednesday (March 24) on Fox. They first performed on the premiere episode two weeks ago. That marked the first (and last) appearance of the sixth contender from this group: the Snail lost the studio audience vote and was revealed to be The Muppets star Kermit the Frog.

We’re only in the first week of August, but we’ve already got our first look at what’s coming to Netflix in September. It’s too early for a full breakdown of every title that will be added to the streaming giant’s library next month, but enough has been announced for us to know to expect a load of great content.
