Brooklyn Nine-Nine alumna Melissa Fumero, AnnaSophia Robb (The Act) and Ben Rappaport (For the People) are set as leads in Grosse Pointe Garden Society, NBC’s drama pilot from Jenna Bans, Bill Krebs and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
The drama follows four members of a suburban garden club — three of them played by Fumero, Robb and Rappaport — all from different walks of life, who get caught up in murder and mischief as they struggle to make their conventional lives bloom.
Fumero plays Birdie. Entitled, rich, swathed in Chanel, a smoker, a drinker, self-destructive at times, toxic at others, but not without real pain beneath her facade, Birdie is a successful author whose memoir, “Digging for Gold: Dancing Through Divorce,” is a bestseller.

Marvel’s Blade has been dulled yet again, as star Aaron Pierre has exited the project, marking just the most recent snag in the project, which is set to be part of Phase Six in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As Pierre confirmed to Variety, “Early on, there were conversations…As the project evolved, I’m no longer part of that — attached.” Pierre’s character in Marvel’s Blade was unknown.
There has been a lot of change throughout the development of Marvel’s revisiting of the Blade franchise, most of which relates to talent behind the camera. For starters, Watchmen’s Stacy Osei-Kuffour was hired as writer in 2021 before being replaced by Michael Starrbury (Colin in Black & White) and a handful of others, including True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto and later Logan’s Michael Green. It’s widely believed that Aaron Pierre’s character would be dropped as subsequent drafts came in.

As the project evolved, I'm no longer part of that – attached."Aaron is the latest star to depart the film – which has been stuck in development purgatory since it was first announced in 2019 – after Bassam Tariq was replaced as director by Yann Demange. At least five writers are said to have been attached to the project with Michael Green the latest to come on board.Only Ali has been cast as the titular vampire slayer although he assured fans last year that he was "encouraged" by the way the project was developing. The Oscar-winning actor told...

Aaron Pierre is no longer attached to Marvel’s upcoming “Blade” film, Variety has learned.
The actor revealed the update to Variety on the red carpet for the 55th NAACP Image Awards.
“Early on, there were conversations,” Pierre said of his involvement. “As the project evolved, I’m no longer part of that — attached.”
Pierre was set to star alongside Mahershala Ali, who plays the vampire hunter originally brought to life by Wesley Snipes. Pierre’s role remained undisclosed, although it was reported that he was chosen for the part after an expansive and thorough casting process. Marvel has only officially announced Ali’s casting as the eponymous vampire slayer.
Pierre is far from the first person to exit the Marvel film, which has had a fraught development process. Since July 2021, multiple directors and writers have been attached. Bassam Tariq was originally slated to direct, with Stacy Osei-Kuffour penning the script,...

Writer-director Jeremy Saulnier talks to us about the making of the 2015 survival thriller Green Room, which is getting a new disc release this month.
In October 2014, writer-director Jeremy Saulnier had a bit of a problem. Green Room, the follow-up to his micro-budget thriller, Blue Ruin, was nearing the start of shooting, but he still hadn’t managed to cast the role of Darcy – a club owner and leader of a group of rural Neo-Nazis. Most worryingly, as sets for the film were being built, Green Room’s financiers had threatened to withdraw funding if Saulnier couldn’t find a ‘name’ actor.
Fortunately for Saulnier, the script had been sent out to the legendary Patrick Stewart, and despite – or perhaps because of – the less-than-appealing nature of the Darcy character, he agreed to star at the last minute. “He kind of saved the movie,” Saulnier tells us almost a decade on.

Following beloved indies like “Blue Ruin,” “Green Room,” and 2018’s “Hold the Dark,” it’s been several years since we’ve heard from filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier. Saulnier does have a new movie in the can, “Rebel Ridge,” but in a new interview, he describes the making of it as “tumultuous” and admits it was shot three different times (or at least it sounds like there were three different times production attempted to begin).

I have been a fan of director Jeremy Saulnier’s work ever since his feature debut Murder Party was given a home video release back in 2007, and it has been great to watch his career progress through Blue Ruin, Green Room, Hold the Dark, and episodes of True Detective season 3. Anything he does will have my attention, so I was excited when another Saulnier film called Rebel Ridge was announced back in 2019. Unfortunately, we still haven’t seen Rebel Ridge because the Netflix production was delayed by the pandemic lockdowns, then by the departure of lead actor John Boyega a few weeks into filming, reportedly due to “family reasons.” Saulnier did eventually manage to make the movie, though, and he talked about the troubled production during a recent interview with Film Stories.

Jeremy Saulnier’s thriller Rebel Ridge was disrupted by the pandemic and the sudden departure of John Boyega. He talks exclusively to us about its “tumultuous” production.
With such taut, superbly-shot thrillers as Blue Ruin and Green Ruin to his name, interest has been high in writer-director Jeremy Saulnier’s next film, Rebel Ridge. Bankrolled by Netflix and originally due to begin filming in April 2020, however, its production was beset by problems, including a pandemic-induced delay and the sudden departure of its star, John Boyega.
Speaking exclusively to Film Stories, Jeremy Saulnier – who’s promoting a new home release of his 2015 thriller, Green Room – described the making of Rebel Ridge as “tumultuous.”
“We came back three years in a row to make that movie,” he adds.
After Covid-19 saw Rebel Ridge’s production delayed in 2020, filming commenced in Louisiana the following spring, with Don Johnson, James Badge Dale, James Cromwell...

After Murder Party (2007), the Cannes Film Festival selected Blue Ruin (2013) and Green Room (2015) and TIFF selected Hold the Dark (2018), Jeremy Saulnier‘s fifth feature film faced the eye of multiple storms dead on. Don Johnson is a personal hero of mine. One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed copy of his 1987 album, “Heartbeat”, which I have hanging on my living room wall. Being a child of the eighties, I always thought he was the coolest of the cool. As a youngster, I got into Miami Vice in a big way through re-runs, and I loved him in action flicks like 1989’s Dead-Bang, and 1991’s Best Movie You Never Saw fave Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. Plus, there was Nash Bridges!

Exclusive: Netflix finally is due to get back up and running on action-thriller Rebel Ridge after an 11-month hiatus.
Filming is set to restart on April 25 in the U.S. after production came to a halt in June with the abrupt departure of star John Boyega.
The Star Wars actor left the movie mid-shoot citing “family reasons.” Speculation swirled online about Boyega’s dissatisfaction with the production, but that was denied by his reps and the streamer.
This isn’t a low-budget movie, so the lead actor exiting mid-shoot posed a significant creative, financial and practical hurdle. That’s part of the reason it has taken so long to get back underway.
Since then, Brit Aaron Pierre was cast in the Boyega role. He is known for his turns in The Underground Railroad and Krypton, and the rising actor also has Amazon’s Foe and Disney’s The Lion King...

John Boyega has taken some fascinating swings in his post-“Star Wars” career. Last year, he earned heaps of acclaim for his role as London Metropolitan Police officer Leroy Logan in the “Red, White and Blue” entry in Steve McQueen’s “Small Axe.” He was set to star in the Netflix thriller from Jeremy Saulnier “Rebel Ridge,” and though he left that project earlier this summer, fans can still get a chance to see him in the upcoming “Naked Singularity,” in theaters on August 6 and on demand August 13. There are definite reasons why anyone would want to think that John Boyega might be more of a problem than his agent or many others are willing to admit, and a lot of it does stem from his inability to see what his role actually meant to the Star Wars franchise. His departure from Rebel Ridge, one of his most current projects, was so abrupt that one can’t help but think that his agent had to scramble for something to say in order to keep Boyega’s reputation moving forward rather than let the court of public opinion have its day,

“Star Wars” actor John Boyega was inexplicably stripped of his Twitter verification badge, before it was hastily restored following Variety’s enquiries on Friday.
The actor, who was a central cast member in the most recent “Star Wars” trilogy alongside Daisy Ridley, appeared to lose the verification badge some time earlier this week. Since Wednesday, Twitter users have been remarking on Boyega no longer having a check mark by his Twitter handle.
A spokesperson for Twitter declined to comment but a source suggested the blue check mark had been removed due to “inactivity,” pointing Variety in the direction of Twitter’s verification policy, which says:
“You may lose your badge if you change your account name (@handle), if your account becomes inactive or incomplete, or if you are no longer in the position you initially were verified for — such as an elected government official who leaves office — and you do...

Earlier this month, it was announced that actor John Boyega was exiting an upcoming Netflix project, “Rebel Ridge,” from filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier (“Green Room“). Actors leaving productions isn’t uncommon, but it’s not terribly normal for a film’s lead to exit during the filming and generally regarded as highly unprofessional in the film industry unless in case of emergency or some majorly untenable or contract-breaking situation.

News broke at the start of June that John Boyega was abruptly exiting Jeremy Saulnier’s Netflix movie “Rebel Ridge” due to “family reasons.” The movie, Saulnier’s second Netflix original feature after “Hold the Dark,” was only a week into filming in Louisiana after being delayed for a year because of the pandemic. A new report from The Hollywood Reporter alleged via sources that “Boyega simply walked away from the production with filming underway.” Boyega’s London-based agent, Femi Oguns, denied the claim and stressed “family reasons” were the cause of the exit.
As reported by THR: “According to one person with knowledge of the situation, the filmmakers only discovered [Boyega had exited the film] when they looked for him at his hotel and found that he had checked out…According to sources, there seemed to be no one incident that prompted Boyega to leave in the midst of shooting. Exclusive: John Boyega has exited Netflix movie Rebel Ridge mid-shoot with “family reasons” cited by the streamer as cause for the abrupt departure.
The production is currently paused but we understand Netflix is working hard to find a replacement for the Star Wars actor and someone is likely to be drafted in in the next few days. Filming began on May 3rd in Louisiana.
A Netflix spokesperson told us: “Rebel Ridge is pausing temporarily as we look to re-cast John Boyega who needed to leave the project for family reasons. This is an unusual turn. Lead actors seldom exit projects mid-shoot. We wish Boyega well with whatever he is dealing with.

Launching this weekend on Starzplay, we’re excited to say that to mark the release of Hightown we had the pleasure of partaking in a remote, virtual junket (the way it is these days) with one of the show’s leading stars, James Badge Dale, sporting a rather fantastic moustache, we should add.
We discuss the role, and project with Dale, who plays the renegade detective Ray Abruzzo, amidst a complex murder case set against the Cape Cod background. Dale tells us about accessing the role of a detective, and whether he learnt anything from the role. We also ask for an update on Rebel Ridge, where he is set to star alongside our very own John Boyega.

Jeremy Saulnier is one of the best American filmmakers working today. He’s proven himself to be a director with a very distinct voice and style with recent films like “Blue Ruin,” “Green Room,” and his most recent film, “Hold the Dark.” And though his stint on “True Detective” didn’t work out how he wanted, that hasn’t tempered film fans’ excitement for his next project, “Rebel Ridge.” And as a new report indicates, the cast he’s putting together for that film is only going to raise that anticipation even higher.
