'Blind Side' Tackles Post-Thanksgiving Blahs

6 December 2009 4:07 PM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Though The Blind Side still packed a wallop, the movies as a whole saw a typical post-Thanksgiving slide over the weekend. However, due to the momentum from last weekend's record Thanksgiving gross, overall business was the highest the timeframe has ever seen (although not in terms of attendance), up 21 percent over the same period last year.

As indicated by their close grosses last weekend, The Blind Side out-paced The Twilight Saga: New Moon to claim the top spot. Down 49 percent, the football-themed drama had the best hold among nationwide releases, racking up an estimated $20.4 million. With a super $129.3 million tally in just 17 days, it surpassed Rocky IV to become the highest-grossing sports drama on record (though it 's still a far cry off in terms of attendance). Among football movies, only the Adam Sandler comedies The Waterboy and The Longest Yard made more, and Blind Side will soon overtake them as well. »

Critical Thinking: Armored, Brothers, Fine, Air

Armored

Rotten Tomatoes: 44% (4.8/10)

Metacritic: 51/100

Films with Comparable Scores: "My Bloody Valentine," "My Sister's Keeper," "Transporter 3"

Analysis: Cited as a streamlined heist thriller, the 88 minute runtime and pace are given good notices. Yet there's also many complaints about its formulaic predictability and lack of twists or surprises.

Brothers

Rotten Tomatoes: 56% (6.1/10)

Metacritic: 59/100

Films with Comparable Scores: "Beowulf," "The Good Shepherd," "M:i-2," "Spider-Man 3"

Analysis: A remake that's more melodramatic than its Danish predecessor, the performances (especially Tobey Maguire) are being singled out as superb and the family tragedy/romance elements handled with deft touch by director Jim Sheridan. Yet the story never clicked with some, and quite a few found it too strained and awkwardly oppressive.

Everybody's Fine

Rotten Tomatoes: 46% (5.3/10)

Metacritic: 47/100

Films with Comparable Scores: "27 Dresses," "Jennifer's Body," "The Box," "The Cell"

Analysis: A bland holiday movie about dysfunctional family that lacks laughs and emotion, but Robert DeNiro and a strong »

What would be your dream movie poster mash-up?

24 October 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This is an ingenious update of the movie trailer mash-up craze – mashed movie posters created by English newspaper The Daily Telegraph. Dr Strangelove Actually made me chuckle seeing Peter Sellers tied up in that cutesy Richard Curtis bow. The joy is in the details -- Tinkerbell with a Pulp Fiction cigarette, the Alien head on E.T.’s moon. The unlikeliest combo is Kes (Ken Loach’s classic tearjerker about a working-class schoolboy and his bird) crossed with actioner Transporter 3. Hmmm...I’d love to see Sex and The City done Breakfast at Tiffany’s style…or how about »

Blood: The Last Vampire (2009) Movie Review #2

9 October 2009 11:35 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Blood: the last Vampire” is an interesting proposition, not only because it sees Jeon Ji Hyun (“My Sassy Girl”), one of Korea’s most popular actresses, making her English language debut, but also since it represents one of the few Hollywood Japanese anime adaptations to make a real effort to build upon its source material. The film is based upon the 2000 anime from Production I.G of “Ghost in the Shell” fame, which was directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo (one of the key animators who worked on the classic “Akira”), and was helmed by Chris Nahon, who previously had cross-cultural cinematic experiences with the French-English outings “Empire of the Wolves”, and “Kiss of the Dragon”, arguably one of Jet Li’s better Western efforts. Adding to its pedigree is the presence of Corey Yuen, one of Hong Kong’s most prolific and best known action directors, who recently worked on the »

From Paris With Love Trailer Hits Net

17 September 2009 4:28 AM, PDT | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Last time Pierre Morel lent his name to something, we got the awesome Liam Neeson vehicle Taken, a film so bad ass it made Transporter 2 look like Transporter 3. This time around the name of the flick is From Paris With Love, again co-written and produced by Luc Besson, champion of French B-Movie cinema for two decades. The plot follows American spy Charlie Wax (a freshly shorn John Travolta), as he hooks up with Us Embassy employee Richard Stevens (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers), in order to foil a terrorist plot in Paris. Ebert Calls New York Press Critic Armond White a Troll

14 August 2009 12:21 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

On his personal blog, Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Roger Ebert wrote “Wtf?” and called New York Press critic Armond White a “troll.”  I’ll explain, but first the back story…

Anyone who closely follows the RottenTomatoes “Tomatometer” knows White frequently offends readers by turning in a harsh review for a well-liked film.  While his press credentials are sound, his constant disagreement with the critic population and the public at large is suspect at best.

According to the site, the infamous White agrees with the meter 50% of the time.  However, if you scroll through his voting history you’ll see a suspicious pattern forming.  Armond didn’t like The Wrestler (one of only 5 “rotten” reviews on the site), Up (97% positive), The Dark Knight (94%), Star Trek (95%), Slumdog Millionaire (94%), Milk (94%), or any of the Harry Potter movies.  The list goes on.  Armond White is either deliberately playing the devil’s advocate for publicity »

New Images From Live-Action ‘Blood: The Last Vampire’ Hit The ‘Net

11 June 2009 2:59 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Okay, I’ll admit not knowing much about the “Blood: The Last Vampire” other than it seems to be a favorite of anime- and manga-savvy friends of mine. But after seeing how well “Death Note,” one of my favorite series, was translated to the live-action medium, I’m willing to give anything a shot.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has released a big batch of images from the upcoming, live-action adaptation of “Blood:The Last Vampire,” which stars Gianna Jun as Saya, a 400-year-old, half-vampire assassin on a covert mission in Vietnam-era Japan. Tasked with infiltrating a military school to discover the identity of a hidden demon, Saya has to find out which one of her classmates is the deadly creature preying on humans.

Over at SciFi Wire, they’ve posted 10 of the images that were released today, but here’s a few of the pics that haven’t been seen elsewhere yet: »

Robert Knepper, Ray Park and Deanne Bray join cast of Heroes

5 June 2009 12:34 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Actor Robert Knepper - who played psychopath Theodore 'T-Bag' Bagwell in Prison Break - is to join the cast of Heroes next season.

Knepper, 49, will be the new lead villain in at least six episodes of the fourth season.

He will play the charismatic but evil Samuel, who has a twisted sense of humour and veers into the lives of all the heroes, says The Hollywood Reporter.

On the big screen, Knepper (pictured left) was most recently seen in Transporter 3 and the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Joining Knepper are actors Ray Park and Deanne Bray, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Park played Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace and the mutant called Toad in the first X-Men movie. He plays Snake-Eyes in upcoming action movie G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

First Trailer For ‘The Final Destination’

5 June 2009 9:34 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Last week we got the teaser poster for The Final Destination, the fourth (and presumably last) installment in the teen-horror series. The poster was admittedly pretty cool, but definitely nothing to rave from the rooftops about.

Well today we’re getting another taste of The Final Destination in the form of a full trailer, featuring teases of some of the predictably silly death scenes the Final Destination series is best known for.

The Final Destination is using 3D to hook people in for another go at the successful horror franchise. Since the deaths are silly, the acting is wooden, and even the title isn’t as clever as it thinks it is, the filmmakers needed something to make this latest installment more worthwhile than just renting the first three Final Destination movies. Looks like they found their gimmick solution. Check out the trailer for The Final Destination, and let the »

'Heroes' Grabs T-Bag, Darth Maul

5 June 2009 8:45 AM, PDT | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

When the Fox series "Prison Break" recently ended, Theodore "T-Bag" Bagwell ended up behind bars . again. But a third jail sentence isn't enough to keep actor Robert Knepper from terrorizing the screens and he has now been revealed as the face of evil in the upcoming fourth season of "Heroes." Knepper, who has also starred in "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and "Transporter 3" is committed to a six episode stint on the series which could potentially run a little longer. His character, Samuel, is described as being a charismatic villain possessing a dark and twisted sense of humor, not entirely unlike T-Bag. No details have been revealed on what powers (if any) Samuel will have however based on his previous role it is possible one of them could be getting out of jail via the most »

Ugh, Doesn't Look Like Season Four of 'Heroes' is For Me

4 June 2009 2:30 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Nope, not a movie story, but "Heroes" is an acceptable campfire topic around these parts and a new bit of casting news popped up at The Hollywood Reporter that didn't get me too excited for the next season. Word has it, Robert Knepper, who played Theodore "T-Bag" Bagwell on Fox's "Prison Break," is set to star in at least a six episode arc of the fourth season as the new lead villain. Of course, if you keep up on my reviews you will know I don't exactly have a soft spot in my heart for Knepper's acting. In my review of Transporter 3 I went on to say, "Cast as TP3's baddie is Robert Knepper, the same man that made a fool of himself in Hitman and does it weekly on Fox's 'Prison Break' as T-Bag. Knepper is certainly one of the worst actors getting any play at the moment. »

Prison Break Vet Joins Heroes

3 June 2009 9:50 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Robert Knepper, best known for portraying the colorful villain T-Bag on Fox’s Prison Break, has joined the cast of NBC’s Heroes. The actor will once again play a baddie on the series’ upcoming fourth season. In at least six episodes of the season, Knepper will play Samuel, a Jim Jones type -- charismatic but evil, with a twisted sense of humor -- who will veer into the lives of all heroes. The character had been referred to as "Carnival Barker" in the series breakdown released last month. Heroes is slated to return in the fall for a Lost-style all-original run in a new time slot at 8 p.m. on Mondays. The sci-fi drama -- which enjoys a strong online following -- will share its time period with another fan favorite, Chuck, which will take over in midseason. Production on the new season is scheduled to begin later this week. »

Six Ridiculous Bomb Scenarios in Movies

16 May 2009 6:24 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

The “ticking time bomb” is a common plot device for Hollywood movies.  A quick cut to a digital countdown creates familiar thrills for film audiences, who watch comfortably in safety as the action hero disarms the bomb and saves humanity.  High fives all around.  Jack Bauer would be proud.

While I acknowledge of course that most bomb movies are supposed to be fictional and fun, it’s equally a good time to look at how ridiculous those scenarios really are.  Angels & Demons is out this weekend and features its own outrageous sequence of events.  (I wanted to spare you the overdone rundown of controversial religious movies, so we’ll just be focusing on the explosive elements of the script.)

The latest adventure of symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) focuses on the fast-talking professor hurrying around the Vatican to stop the imminent threat of a dangerous scientific substance.  Without his extensive knowledge of history, »

Jason Statham To Star In ‘The Killer Elite’

15 May 2009 9:08 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

One of the 21st century’s most popular and prominent “action men”, Jason Statham, is set to add another movie to his resume, the action-thriller The Killer Elite. The $40 million movie is based on the bestselling novel The Feather Men, and revolves around, “a group of former British special forces members who are being hunted by assassins. Statham will play a former Navy Seal who is forced out of retirement to save his closest friend.”

The deal for the film was closed a couple of days ago at the Cannes Film Festival and it will be helmed by commercials director Gary McKendry. Inferno will fully finance the project and Joni Sighvattson, Steve Chasman, (Inferno’s own) Bill Johnson and Jim Siebel will act as producers. No writer has been brought on-board as of yet.

Statham Lines Up Yet Another Action Flick

15 May 2009 1:16 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I am not quite sure if Jason Statham would be successful at anything outside of action flicks and greasy Brit gangster films, but I would like to see him try merely because I like the guy. However, it appears he lives by the motto "if it ain't broke don't fix it," as he has lined up yet another starring role in an action feature. Variety reports Statham will star in Killer Elite for commercials director Gary McKendry based on Ranulph Fiennes' bestseller "The Feathermen." Fiennes' story is based real events, and follows a group of former British special forces members who are being hunted by assassins. Statham will play a former Navy Seal who is forced out of retirement to save his closest friend. The plots for Statham's films really make him nothing more than the latest Jean-Claude Van Damme or Steven Seagal. However he has managed to not »
