Although Channing Tatum is considered one of the best-looking actors in modern Hollywood, there’s more to him than just his pleasant appearance.
After he struggled to find a job in his twenties, Tatum eventually stumbled into the acting world by chance, leading to a fruitful and prolific career.

Often typecast as the “dumb but good-looking” hero, Tatum has made major strides to strengthen his portfolio, extending his talent in both comedy and drama.

You might not get the dog you want, but you always get the dog you need. That old dog-lover’s adage applies peculiarly well to Chinese director Guan Hu’s “Black Dog.” A far smaller-scale project than his recent blockbusters “The Eight Hundred” and “The Sacrifice,” Guan’s latest — an Un Certain Regard standout at Cannes this year — nonetheless has the grandly cinematic vision to lend an intimate tale a gloriously epic, allegorical edge.
Set in a dying town on the fringes of the Gobi desert, “Black Dog” has elements of the genre western, like taciturn loner antihero Lang (a fantastic Eddie Peng), who returns to his eroded hometown himself hollowed out by repressed guilt for the incident that caused his recent imprisonment. But, dipped in the caustic soda of social commentary and steeped in the fatalistic mood of a place barely chugging by on borrowed time, the film also...

There is only one Andrea Arnold, as much as her contemporaries in Europe and beyond try to imitate her particular style: emotionally heightened social realism with often first-time actors playing characters not far from their real selves. That itself started in the 1950s with British kitchen sink realism. Yet Arnold has done much to imbue it with a radical poetry that finds the beauty in a hardscrabble life, from a volatile East London teenager with hip-hop ambitions in “Fish Tank” (2009) to the rumbling road odyssey “American Honey” (2016) that found Arnold shooting in the United States for the first time.
Her latest film “Bird,” continuing a tradition for one-word titles centered around animalia Arnold started in 2001 with her short film “Dog” and more recently with the documentary “Cow,” is a departure for Arnold in a key way: This sensitively drawn if opaque coming-of-age fable about 12-year-old Bailey (newcomer Nykiya Adams) uses,...

Across her nearly 30-year career, Arnold has crafted a visual language and storytelling framework that centers closeness and familiarity; relationships, challenged by their own intensity or dysfunction, are evoked through intricate details, like beads of sweat on a shoulder blade or the textures of a wasp’s wings. As well as receiving this year’s Carrosse d’Or, Arnold presents her new feature Bird in the official selection, marking her fourth appearance in competition. Her early short films, Milk (1998), Dog (2001), and Wasp (2003)—all snapshots of young women living through personal...

While in the middle of filming his latest mystery film, Fountain of Youth, Guy Ritchie is revealing another film project, Wife and Dog. Ritchie’s 18th feature hails from Black Bear, who launches Wife and Dog at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival event. Plot details about Wife and Dog remain a mystery, though Variety hears Ritchie is returning to the shady world of British Aristocracy for this anticipated feature. Cameras roll for Wife and Dog in October, with top-tier Hollywood actors negotiating for starring roles.

Shawn Levy's upcoming satirical superhero flick "Deadpool & Wolverine" will star Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the title characters, two bickering vigilantes who have very different approaches to their vigilantism. Wolverine, while impulsive, makes sure he is in the moral right before he activates his switchblade knuckles and begins stabbing bad guys. Deadpool is more of a "shoot first, never ask questions" antihero, painfully aware of his own place in a massive media franchise; Deadpool regularly breaks the fourth wall and lambastes the company that made the film he's in.
Deadpool is also weirdly compassionate when it comes to the people and animals he loves. He will happily decapitate a bad guy and joke about his victim's misery, but then return home to his beloved Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) where they will cuddle, make goo-goo eyes at one another, and engage in sexual acts not usually seen in films produced by the Disney Corporation.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is the most anticipated MCU release for several reasons. Firstly, it marks the first “R”-rated MCU film and introduces Deadpool to the MCU. Secondly, it promises numerous cameos and variants.
While fans eagerly await cameos from beloved ‘X-Men’ franchise characters, the movie will also feature a plethora of Deadpool variants.
As of now, only a handful have been confirmed, some through trailers and merchandise. One of them is Dogpool, Deadpool’s furry variant, portrayed by a canine named Peggy. Notably, Peggy earned the title of Britain’s Ugliest Dog. Reynolds confessed in a recent interview with Empire that this is precisely why he selected her—it was love at first sight.
She won the award for Britain’s Ugliest Dog. The reason why I was a huge proponent for her was because she feels like the animal manifestation of Wade Wilson.

If you ever watched Pixar’s heartwarming, imaginative 2009 film Up and thought, “Wow, I’d sure love to see what that big floating house would be like to live in,” you might be getting your chance.
As a part of Airbnb’s new “Icons” line of vacation homes, the house from Up has been painstakingly recreated in Abiquiu, New Mexico and is available to book now. The Airbnb listing, which celebrates the 15th anniversary of Up, is “hosted” by the film’s protagonist Carl Frederickson and features a myriad of elements from the original film — Ellie’s Adventure Book, Dug the talking dog, and yes, the balloons. The listing features a photo of the balloon-laden property being lifted by a crane high up in the air, so if you rent, you might want to hold onto the porch railing when stepping outside.
The two-bed, one-bathroom “Up House” also promises activities like “wilderness excursions,...

“I think it was Andy Warhol who said, “Make art and let others decide whether it is good or bad. But while they are deciding, make some more”.
That was the line with which Nicole Kidman ended her 15-minute acceptance speech after Meryl Streep had presented her with the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award.
That is something that seems entirely appropriate for Kidman, who doesn’t seem to stop “making art,” taking risks at every turn, telling stories through her power not just as an actor, but also a producer dedicated to bringing those stories to screens big and small. At 56, she is on the younger side of the previous 48 recipients of this very high honor, the first Australian to receive it. And someone very much in the middle of creating those life achievements that led to last night’s honor at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, where a large...

Ever since The Tortured Poets Department was released last week, Taylor Swift‘s fans have been trying to decode the meanings behind the songs.
Well, one song in particular, “The Black Dog,” has gotten some attention.
“And so I watch as you walk – into some bar called The Black Dog – and pierce new holes in my heart,” Taylor sings on the album. Well, there is a pub in London, England called The Black Dog and fans believe the song could be a reference that exact location, and possibly somewhere Joe Alwyn frequents.
Keep reading to find out more…
The owner of the pub, Lily Bottomley, was tracked down and asked if Joe visits The Black Dog.
Lily didn’t outright confirm it, but she did hint that Joe might be a guest at the pub on occasion. She shared with Sky News, “I don’t want to give too much away.

Jane Campion, director of “The Power of the Dog,” is the recipient of this year’s Pardo d’Onore Manor at the Locarno Film Festival — its award for outstanding achievement in cinema. So yes, the “Dog” director is getting a cat trophy: Pardo d’Onore translates to “Leopard of Honor” in English.
The award will be bestowed on August 16, 2024 at the 77th edition of the festival. Locarno will also feature screenings of two Campion movies as selected by the director herself: 1990’s “An Angel at My Table” and 1993’s “The Piano.” It will be a brand new 4K restoration of “The Piano” that audience in Switzerland sees.
It’s quite an honor, but certainly not Campion’s first big award. She was the first woman to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival (for “The Piano”). Campion is also the first woman to be nominated twice for...

The Taylor Swift drops just keep coming.
At midnight, Swift released her 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department” — and then announced two hours later that it’s a surprise double album, leaving casual fans and Swifites alike to spend the day decoding who the songs are about. (How many Friday afternoon Slack messages were devoted to parsing if a song was about Swift exes Joe Alwyn or Matty Healy?) And then came the album’s first music video for single “Fortnite,” co-written by and featuring Post Malone.
In addition to “Dead Poets Society” (note that neither title uses an apostrophe) alums Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles, the music video boasts another big name: Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon”).
This isn’t the first time Prieto has collaborated with Swift. The cinematographer previously worked on the 2020 music videos for Swift’s songs “The Man,” “Cardigan,” and “Willow.

The key to understanding Conan O’Brien’s comedy is knowing that it comes from a point of kindness. Yes, I know in this age of comics punching down, this kind of compliment may leave you with a neon “Must Avoid!” sign flashing in your bleary eyes — but stay with me.

Get your chocolate starfish ready: 7-Eleven is rollin’ out a new hot dog flavored sparkling water beverage. Apparently there’s no affiliation with nu-metal pioneers Limp Bizkit, who famously released the multiplatinum 2000 album Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water.
“7-Select Big Bite Hot Dog Sparkling Water” is launching as part of a new line of sparkling beverages created in collaboration with art-inspired brand Miracle Seltzer. Other flavors include Lemon Lime, Green Apple, Sweet Orange, but it’s the Big Bite Hot Dog flavor — inspired by 7-Eleven’s famous roller dog — that has our inner nu-metal kid salivating.

Simon Cellan Jones-directed Arthur the King was born as a promising flick to do well on the big screen, and Lionsgate had all the reasons to believe in it. But the road to tackle the competitors was not smooth as the move was scrapped badly.
Mark Wahlberg in Arthur the King (2024)
In hindsight, there is not one single reason for the bumpy road to the Mark Wahlberg-led movie. Dog movies that have done quite well in the past include Channing Tatum’s movie, Dog. But what led to the downfall of Arthur the King? What went wrong? One mistake from Lionsgate may have pushed the movie to the edge of box-office doom.

How does an “A” CinemaScore and 4 1/2 star PostTrak movie with a major star and a dog underdeliver at the box office?
The adventure sports-charged, doggie-with-a-heart title Arthur the King from Lionsgate had no chance of winning a crown this weekend with an $8M-$10M projection. However, many expected this well-received movie to come at the top of expectations. It did not with a $7.5M opening.
Also, the misfiring of “A” CinemaScore, mid-budget movies at the box office is becoming a trend.
Arthur the King‘s underperformance had to do with the fact that it looked ripe for streaming by today’s standards and not theatrical, right? That’s why people didn’t show up? Yeah, but that’s not 100% of the reason.
True, stars need to have a come-to-Jesus with themselves when making streaming movies in conjunction with theatrical titles: Do you water down your marquee image by making yourself available for free at home?...

Sunday Am Update: The whole marketplace is coming in lighter than expected at $89M, which is -3% off from the same frame a year ago when Shazam Fury of the Gods did $30M. That’s exactly what the second weekend is for Kung Fu Panda 4 which is a great hold at -48%, rising to $107.7M stateside running total. Legendary/Warner Bros’ Dune Part Two isn’t far behind with $29.1M, -37%, for a running total of $205.3M. The domestic endgame on the sequel is expected to be around $275M.
Despite excellent holds by the big guns, it’s unfortunately, the middle of the box office dropped out — and that’s where the marketplace is still weak, post pandemic and post strikes. Lionsgate’s Mark Wahlberg dog adventure racing movie, Arthur the King, came in below in its projects at $7.5M. The movie was forecasted to do $8M-$10M. Important...

The Helldivers 2 hype train continues to sweep past other titles as, yet another addition is all set to give the game another major boost. The live-service game has done everything right, going the extra mile to tease future content in-game, as spotted by some eagle-eyed players. Helldivers 2 players recently got their hands on Mechs, the release of which broke the game’s servers for a while.
According to an approval given by Johan Pilestedt, the CEO of Arrowhead Studios, the game could yet be getting its most fiery addition in the form of a fan suggestion. It may not be official, but Pilestedt’s reply shows how much the developers like listening to the players.

With no big new releases at the box office this weekend, sci-fi epic "Dune: Part Two" and "Kung Fu Panda 4" are staying seated at the top of the charts. It's a closer race than last week, though, as the second half of Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" adaptation continues to draw crowds and rake in those lucrative IMAX ticket sales. Deadline reports that "Dune: Part Two" is tracking to gross $28-29 million in its third weekend at the box office, a relatively small drop of around 38% from last week.
The beauty of counter-programming, though, is that two big movies can dominate at the box office without cannibalizing each other (sometimes they can even team up and help each other). After a strong $57.9 million start last weekend, "Kung Fu Panda 4" is tracking for a $31.5 million second weekend, a drop of around 46%.
While Jack Black's kung fu fighting panda looks likely to land the No.

Universal’s “Kung Fu Panda 4” held on to the No. 1 spot at the box office this weekend without any challenge from a handful of new releases, but the gap between it and Warner Bros./Legendary’s “Dune: Part Two” is quite narrow.
In its second weekend, “Kung Fu Panda 4” is currently estimated to earn $31.5 million, dropping just 46% from its $57.9 million start. Fueled by families who haven’t had an animated movie to see in theaters since “Migration” during the holidays, as well as by some nostalgic millennials who grew up seeing the first “Kung Fu Panda” back in 2008, this DreamWorks sequel is set to blow past $100 million in domestic grosses by the end of the weekend.
“Dune: Part Two,” meanwhile, is just behind “Kung Fu Panda 4” with an industry-estimated third weekend total of $28.5 million. That’s another strong hold as it drops just 34% from its second weekend.

“Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Dune: Part Two” are both putting up strong holds in North American theaters, staying ahead of Lionsgate’s new based-on-a-real-dog drama “Arthur the King,” which earned $3 million from 3,003 locations on its opening day.
The Mark Wahlberg vehicle is expected to earn south of $8 million heading into the weekend, which would be good for bronze on domestic charts. It’s a solid place to start for the drama, which carries close to a $20 million production budget and boasts a stellar “A” grade from audience survey firm Cinema Score. (Reviews have been mixed.) As a canine comparison, the Channing Tatum-starring “Dog” from United Artists opened to $14 million back in February 2022 before more than quadrupling that with a $61 million total. Lionsgate will hope that “Arthur” can strike a similar chord with audiences.

Mark Wahlberg’s canine drama “Arthur the King” opens in cinemas on Friday, but it may not have enough bite to top domestic box office charts.
Lionsgate’s film, a feel-good story about a man who befriends a wounded stray dog, is targeting a debut of $8 million to $10 million from 3,000 North American theaters. It’s a so-so start for the roughly $20 million-budgeted movie.
Despite the newcomer, last weekend’s champ “Kung Fu Panda 4” is expected to dominate again with roughly $28 million to $30 million in its sophomore outing. So far, the animated fourquel has grossed $62 million at the domestic box office and $93 million globally.
“Dune: Part Two” won’t be far behind “Panda” as the sci-fi adventure looks to continue its impressive box office run. The “Dune” sequel is projected to add $24 million to $27 million during its third weekend of release. After 12 days on the big screen, “Dune 2” has...

As a rule, we here at /Film try not to pit icons against each other. That said, "Anatomy of a Fall" breakout star Messi better watch his tail because he's not the only movie dog poised to win over hearts and minds at theaters these days.
By all accounts, "The Fall Guy" is an excellent and entertaining ode to stunt performers and blue-collar workers everywhere. But as much as the film is designed around the appeal of genuine movie stars like Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, may we never sleep on the novelty and appeal of a lovable dog character making an appearance in the middle of all the action, too. Look no further than the mainstream success of "John Wick," after all, although this time it's safe to say that animal lovers need not fear any grisly fates. That turns out to be a tool that director David Leitch...

After two weeks of moviegoers returning to theaters in force, we’re back to a weekend with a number of lower-key releases just hoping to make any sort of mark against the two big movies. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This weekend will once again be about “Kung Fu Panda 4” vs. “Dune: Part Two,” although it’s likely to be a second weekend with the animated movie dominating, with both of them remaining in over 4,000 theaters.
Opening in 2,850 theaters, the biggest new wide release of the weekend is the Mark Wahlberg drama “Arthur the King,” based on the true story of Mikael Lindnord (renamed “Michael Light” for the movie), an outdoors endurance racer who puts together a team to cross the Dominican Republic. That team also includes actors Simu Liu (“Barbie”), Nathalie Emmanuel (the “Fast and Furious” movies) and Ali Suliman (“Lone Survivor”), and along the way,...

Mark Wahlberg hasn't had a movie in theaters in a couple of years, but he's about to stage a comeback with "Arthur the King." Hailing from Lionsgate, the true story-inspired movie centers on adventure racer Michael Light and a street dog that he befriends during a crucial moment in his life. So, can this man and his dog tale help bring Wahlberg some glory at the box office? Even though that success may be relatively understated, it's looking very much like that could be the case.
The audience-friendly flick hits theaters next weekend, where it will be opening against "The American Society of Magical Negroes" (which figures to have a muted debut). Kristen Stewart's "Love Lies Bleeding" is also expanding into more theaters, although it also figures to have a somewhat limited footprint. This is to say, "Arthur the King" will probably do the best of the weekend's newcomers,...

“The only reason we are talking right now,” director Pablo Berger says over Zoom, “is because I fell in love with Robot and Dog and the story.” The Spanish director is speaking from L.A., where he recently attended the Oscar nominees luncheon for his feted feature animated film Robot Dreams, but, as he explains, the project originated with Sara Varon’s 2007 graphic novel. “The characters are very simple, cartoonlike,” says Berger. “That was very attractive and at the same time something very good for animation.”
So Berger, working on his first animated project, along with his character designer Daniel Fernandez Casas, embarked on a little bit of a “makeover” for the central duo, a human-like dog and the robot pal he orders who becomes his best friend. Set in ’80s New York, the dialogue-free film — which will have a U.S. theatrical release in May — tracks the ups and...

The Oscar nominees luncheon is always full of good vibes, a definite highlight of the season especially since those in the room have all made it this far — all Oscar nominated and getting to mingle not just with other nominees but also the large number of Academy voters on hand. This year celebrates 25 years since the final year of the 1900’s. A year that brought about such classics as The Matrix, Fight Club, American Pie, and Office Space as well as my personal favorite movie of all time: Arlington Road. The year was so successful that 20 years later it would inspire a book titled Best Movie Year Ever.
With a vast cannon of films ranging from highly anticipated block busting prequels (Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace) to that years’ eventual Best Picture winner American Beauty and a movie that changed the meaning of twist endings forever (The Sixth Sense) 1999 truly was a year for the ages.

Scott Stuber, who pushed Netflix to expand into blockbuster movie territory, is stepping down from the streaming service’s top film job to form his own media company.
Stuber will remain with the streamer until March, at which point Netflix Cco Bela Bajaria will temporarily assume his role while she searches for a replacement. Bloomberg first reported the news.
Under Stuber’s direction, Netflix’s feature business aggressively entered the blockbuster space, courting filmmakers such as Zack Snyder, the Russo brothers, Michael Bay and Rawson Marshall Thurber. The era began with the Will Smith starrer Bright, the 2017 film that had a reported budget of $90 million, a hefty number that turned heads at the time but would soon look quaint compared to what was to come.
Red Notice, starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, cost somewhere in the $250 million to $300 million range, while the Russo’ Gray Man cost in the $200 million range.
