Matt Singer: We entered 2009 with a new president who promised to bring our country hope. But looking back at the year in film, I don't see a lot of hope; I see a lot of grief and despair. Oh sure, the box office charts were dominated by your now-typical assortment of franchises, spin-offs, reboots and sequels -- a major cause of grief and despair for some -- but you also had enough apocalypse movies to fill a book on Biblical prophecy. Even some of the obligatory superheroes got dark: the world (spoiler alert!) doesn't end in "Watchmen," but it comes awfully close.
There was an air of doom in certain quarters of the film industry this year too, as the effects of the bad economy rippled through everything from festival attendance to the shriveling ranks of working film critics. Examining my own list of the year's best, I find that »

It was a dirty job, but someone had to do it.
We couldn't wrap-up this year without paying special tribute to those unsung heroes, namely actors who get naked! Whether it's on the big or small screen, it takes a special kind of courage to strip to your birthday suit in front of cameras and key grips knowing that someone online is going to scrutinize you down to the dimple on your derriere! To acknowledge their willingness, we offer this salute to some of the men who dared this year.
If you're worried about the Nsfw possibilities, we've obscured the naughty parts, but you can still ... get the idea.
Enjoy the most blatantly prurient post you'll ever see on this site!
Being Human technically isn't from this year, but it did debut on BBC America in 2009, so that gives us a legitimate reason to show the adorkably hot (and out »

A man awakes feeling ill after a night out partying. He finds out that he has been poisoned by a luminous toxin and will soon die. With no antidote available, he only has two options: (1) figure out why the fuck someone wanted him dead and (2) kill the sonuvabitch.
And no, this isn’t Crank or Crank 2: High Voltage or Crank 3: The Juice is Loose costarring O.J. Simpson. This classic film noir from 1950 is the originator of the, “I’m already dead and now I’m off to the races to get some sweet, sweet revenge before I croak,” storyline.
It’s a must see for any film noir fan and, well, just a must see in general. So go watch the damn thing already.

Neveldine and Taylor stormed the scene in 2006 when they unleashed Crank onto the masses. Crank 2 established their style and Gamer is the film that takes it even a few steps further. How many fans they're going to lose along the way is hard to predict, but if you're looking for hyperactive craziness, there really is no alternative.
Crank was a fun little action film that abused its simple storyline to put as much adrenaline in its short running time as possible. It was a low budget affair that showcased the duo's talent and would redoubtably lead to more expensive films. As usual I was a little weary of their next projects as more money often results in more studio involvement, ultimately putting a handbrake on their hyperactive and action-infused style. Gamer proves there was never any reason to worry.
The concept of Gamer is quite fun. It takes the »

The /Filmcast: After Dark is a recording of what happens right after The /Filmcast is over, when the kids have gone to bed and the guys feel free to speak whatever is on their minds. In this episode, actor Clifton Collins Jr. stops by to chat with Dave Chen, Devindra Hardawar, and Adam Quigley about his experiences on the sets of Extract, Crank: High Voltage, Brothers, and The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, which is out in theaters now. Earlier this summer, we had the chance to talk to actor Clifton Collins, Jr., who has had a very busy year or so. In addition to all the films, he won a Cmt award, believe it or not, for directing the video for the Zac Brown Band's "Chicken Fried." And the awards show was on his birthday, which had to be a nice bonus.
But between Star Trek, Crank: High Voltage, Sunshine Cleaning, Extract, and now Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, there has been no shortage of opportunities to see Collins' work.
In fact, Boondock Saints II is expanding into a few more cities this weekend, so if you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, maybe you can get to it over the next few days. Our interview with Clifton, which we conducted this summer, first ran back in August and covers a little bit of everything. »

Pacing is a tricky thing to pull off in movies. It takes a truly talented filmmaker (and editor) to maintain a rate of movement, events, or forward-moving plotting that sustains audience interest while avoiding the potential to overwhelm. In an era where Adhd music video editing has become a decades-worn norm (with, admittedly, a great deal of its own unique artistic merit), a fast pace can become a fruitful means for audience engagement or an all-too-evident handicap trying to cover up a film’s inadequacies through distraction—in other words, it could run the gamut between Trainspotting and Crank 2, or from Martin Scorsese to recent Tony Scott, or…well, you get the picture. But what’s even harder to pull off is the effective slow-paced film. It’s not something that comes around very often, but when it works it can result in some magnificent cinematic revelations. I’ve been guilty of this just as much »

Chinese-American actress Bai Ling had her breakout role in 1997's Red Corner, a courtroom drama in which she defended Richard Gere from a corrupt government trial - romancing him, naturally, along the way. But since then, Ling has played a streak of bad girls and scantily-clad seductresses that put her equally-sensual public persona front and center, in films ranging from Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow to this year's Crank: High Voltage. Even in her latest film, the independent drama A Beautiful Life, Ling plays a stripper - albeit one with a heart of gold.
Some might argue that her career choices lean toward female objectification, and they wouldn't be wrong. But there's something wholly empowered about the way Bai Ling tackles her film roles. Sure, she's played her fair share of strippers, prostitutes, and femme fatales, but does it matter if she totally owns and embraces those characters »

Salma Hayek is the only woman in the world that can pull off having a full beard or unibrow and still be Foxy McHot. Even though her latest feature, Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant –based on the book series from Darren Shan– looks like another (sigh) lame teeny vampire movie, the trailer and even the below clip with Hayek’s push-up bra, may say otherwise.
The film stars John C. Reilly, Josh Hutcherson, Chris Massoglia, Jessica Carlson, Michael Cerveris, Ray Stevenson, Patrick Fugit, Daniel Newman, Morgan Saylor, Ken Watanabe, Salma Hayek, and directed by Paul Weitz.
Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant is due out October 23, 2009.

The Human Condition (Criterion) Masaki Kobayashi’s epic (574 minutes) adaptation of Junpei Gomikawa’s six-volume novel was originally made and released as three separate films (1959-61), and is rightfully regarded as a landmark of Japanese cinema. Candide-like story of naïve, good-hearted Kaiji (Japanese superstar Tatsuya Nakadai) from labor camp supervisor, to Imperial Army solider, to Soviet Pow, and Kaiji’s struggle to maintain his humanity throughout. Unfolds with the mastery of a great novel, beautifully-shot, and a stunning example of cinematic mastery on the part of its makers. Four-disc set bonuses include: Interview with Kobayashi; Interview with Nakadai; Featurette; Trailer; Essay by critic Philip Kemp. Widescreen. Dolby 3.0 surround.
State Of Play (Universal) Russell Crowe stars as a veteran Washington D.C. political reporter investigating the murder of an aide to a rising congressional star (Ben Affleck), who also happens to be an old friend. »

It doesn't premiere until October 23, but Southland is already undergoing a cast shake-up.
After just three episodes as a new regular on the cop drama, Amaury Nolasco has dropped out as the new partner of Lydia Adams. No explanation for why has been provided yet.
The NBC series has tapped Clifton Collins to fill the void. He'll portray a new character named Ray Suarez.
Collins most recently appeared in Star Trek and has also enjoyed big screen roles in Crank: High Voltage and Sunshine Cleaning.

Directorial double act Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor seem to have an alarming amount of artistic control over their films. Their body of work to date (Crank, Pathology, Crank: High Voltage) contains some of the most brutally violent and sexually explicit scenes in contemporary cinema. They create chaotic worlds full of visual and aural excess, and up to a point I am a firm supporter of their cause. 2006’s Crank, for example, has the violent sensibilities of an 80s action picture combined with a frenetic and unique style of editing and shooting that sets it apart from the gritty, realistic action movies made since The Bourne Identity. They also created in Chev Chelios (played by Jason Statham) a pseudo-superhero who is truly invincible and completely devoid of Spidermanesque angst. Their latest film is Gamer, another completely insane action picture that gorges you on worrying images. But is there any enjoyment »

A hot TV comedy gets a rare win for TV DVD on the home video charts this week. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Office: Season Five took the top spot on the national DVD sales charts, for the week ending September 13. While it rarely happens that a TV set debuts atop the sales charts, the NBC hit had a rather commanding lead, selling 32% more than its nearest competitor, fellow new release Crank 2: High Voltage, in second place.
Crank 2: High Voltage also had to settle for second place on the rental charts as well, with last week's top rental, State of Play, repeating atop the rental charts. But the Neveldine/Taylor action sequel did secure a victory in high-definition.
Crank 2: High Voltage was the top-selling Blu-ray disc of the week, with a healthy 22% of the film's total sales coming in the Bd format. The new Sapphire Edition »
