Walken, Freeman, and Macy Team Up For The Maiden Heist

It’s hard to a fault a movie that features Christopher Walken, Morgan Freeman, and William H. Macy in key roles, even if it does look like yet another wacky heist movie featuring actors who are capable of better things. Peter Hewitt’s 2009 crime comedy “The Maiden Heist” certainly has potential, but after watching the trailer, I’m not entirely sold on the idea. I used to be able to trust Morgan Freeman, that is, until I properly investigated both “The Contract” and “The Code,” two films that are the very definition of mediocre. What’s more, it’s from the guy who directed that terrible live-action “Garfield” flick. Yikes. Perhaps “The Maiden Heist” suffers from a lackluster trailer, one that degrades the film’s overall quality. Then again, maybe not.
Here’s what it’s all about:

The Code (aka Thick as Thieves, 2009) Movie Review

If there was a genre of film entitled ”Mediocre Heist Films” “The Code” would be on the top of the list, without a shadow of a doubt. Unfortunately there is not a genre of that nature so “The Code” gets put towards the bottom of the list of ‘Heist Films’. Now don’t get me wrong, the film isn’t the worst film I’ve ever seen, the problem is that it is very forgettable.
“The Code” is the story of Keith Ripley (Morgan Freeman), a thief who is arguably the best in the game. Keith is in debt to the Russian mob, So he has to pull of one last big heist to pay them back. So he recruits Gabriel Martin (Antonio Banderas), a thief who is young in the game with a promising track record. All this is happening while the FBI is trying to arrest Keith, the proverbial white whale.

Hey, remember the Morgan Freeman / Antonio Banderas thriller, The Code (also known as Thick as Thieves)? No? That's ok, no one does! This poor film was doomed to go straight to DVD shelves, but there it was not forgotten. Home Media Magazine reports that the flick topped the rental charts last week, deftly knocking Gran Torino out of #1. (Mr. Freeman, did you call and crow over your pal Clint for that one? If not, you should. I'm sure he'll get a good laugh.)
Scott Weinberg believes this is the first Dtv movie to ever top the rental charts. If anyone out there knows of another one that has, you should correct him. But for now, history has been made by Mimi Leder!
The plot follows an aging jewel thief (Freeman) and the uppity young Turk he recruits to help him pull off one final job. They're not going after just any family jewels,

Ordinarily a movie that goes straight to video is regarded as being among the dregs of a studio's output, but last week, The Code, starring Morgan Freeman and Antonio Banderas, debuted at No. 1 on Home Media magazine's rental chart without ever seeing the light of a theater screen. In second place was Disney's Confessions of a Shopaholic, followed by Warner Bros.' Inkheart, which flopped in theaters. Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino, which held the top spot a week ago, fell to No. 4 this week. On the sales chart, Confessions was at the top, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert, while Gran Torino slid to second place.

It turned out to be a good week for female shoppers on the home video charts this week. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Confessions of a Shopaholic was the top-selling DVD on the national DVD sales charts, for the week ending June 28. A lack of competition, however, made for some unusual inclusions on the rest of the charts, though.
The Code, a straight-to-dvd thriller starring Morgan Freeman, was the top rental of the week, bumping last week's top rental, Gran Torino, to fourth place in rentals behind Confessions of a Shopaholic and another new release, Inkheart.
With last week's huge theatrical release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, its predecesor returned to the home video charts. Transformers ended up on third place on the DVD sales charts, behind last week's winner, Gran Torino in second place and Transformers also finished the week atop the Blu-ray sales charts, with 21% of the

Morgan Freeman and Antonio Banderas have to break into a seemingly impregnable vault to steal some eggs or someone will die. This thriller would appear to have a top notch cast, but it dumped to home video because the story is entirely predictable. International art thief Keith Ripley (Morgan Freeman) is riding the subway and low level thief Gabriel Martin (Antonio Banderas) steals some diamonds. Ripley watches Martin work with interest because he.s formulating his next job and needs a partner, so he approaches Martin and asks him to fill the bill. Ripley.s next job is to steal some priceless Faberge eggs, which were thought lost, that have resurfaced and are being kept in an impregnable vault

Banderas Is Wary Of Naked Scenes

Movie hunk Antonio Banderas has become wary of stripping off onscreen - because he is reluctant to flaunt his body as he gets older.
The actor disrobes for passionate scenes with Radha Mitchell in upcoming crime drama The Code.
But he felt uncomfortable getting naked in front of the cameras - because the ageing process has affected his confidence.
Banderas tells the New York Post, "It's always uneasy when you get into bed with a woman on screen - it's difficult because you have 50 people around and there are some people who are sensitive to that.
"Radha was - she is a lady, so I tried to be as respectful as possible. At the same time, I'm nearly 50 years old, and even I start getting more wary of those scenes... Everything changes as you get older - your mind, your body, the way you view the world."

Worst. DVD. Release. Day. Ever. Aside from the Oscar-nominated Waltz with Bashir, the only major releases out this week are Confessions of a Shopaholic, the Brendan Fraser fantasy dud Inkheart, and... The Pink Panther 2. Ewww. Oh but wait it gets better! There's the Antonio Banderas/Morgan Freeman direct-to-dvd crime flick The Code, Simon Says starring Crispin Glover, Legend of the Bog starring Vinnie Jones, and the made-for-tv horror movie Backwoods starring Haylie Duff! At least there are a couple of Criterion releases and an older Mike Leigh movie called High Hopes... but seriously, that's it.

What is ‘The Code?’ (Blu-ray & Contest)

There’s a movie coming out June 23rd starring Antonio Banderas and Morgan Freeman called The Code. It never had a theatrical release and based on what I’ve heard it seems kind of odd this went straight to DVD. It’s averaging 6/10 at IMDb and my buddy Ed from ComingSoon.net commented that he thought it was good enough to warrant a spin on the big screen.
The film was previously called Thick as Thieves and while The Code sounds cooler, if they didn’t have enough faith to release this theatrically I don’t know why the bothered with a title change.
Anyway, I just thought I’d put this on your radar screen in case you might be interested.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“While pulling a down-and-dirty jewelry heist on a subway train, Gabriel (Antonio Banderas) encounters Ripley (Morgan Freeman), a legendary thief who was casing the same job.

Screen Rant recently reported on Dreamworks Animation’s lineup from 2009-2012, a list which included the likes of a fourth Shrek movie, a third Madagascar and a sequel to Kung Fu Panda. But also amongst the animation line-up - which reads as a whats what of money making franchises - was a Puss in Boots solo movie, which is a spin-off to the Shrek franchise. With the following synopsis, Dreamworks hinted at what form the spin-off movie will take, by saying it’ll deal with the character’s early years:
“Swords will cross and hearts will be broken in this adventure starring one of the most beloved characters of the Shrek universe - Puss In Boots. It’s a swashbuckling ride through Puss’s early years as he teams with mastermind Humpty Dumpty and the street-savvy Kitty to steal the famed Goose that lays the Golden Eggs.”
