"It's something that could change the world." What Is this movie?! Saban Films has unveiled a full-length trailer for the unique sci-fi feature Kill Switch (not related to the Steven Seagal action film Kill Switch). This is based on a Pov concept short film called What's in the Box?, which a visual effects supervisor has turned into a feature film. Dan Stevens stars as a pilot who heads into another dimension (created by an energy experiment gone wrong) to save Earth. Also starring Charity Wakefield and Bérénice Marlohe. I really don't know what's going on, but it does seem very cool. This looks like it's half video game, and half movie combined into one, and I'm not sure it's going to work. But I'm definitely curious anyway. Get ready. Here's the full-length trailer (+ poster) for Tim Smit's Kill Switch, direct from YouTube (via Tmb): You can also still...

Dan Stevens is definitely having a moment. The "Downton Abbey" star had been a familiar commodity since before his time on the period drama but that show really landed him on the map. Not long after leaving the show he came out swinging for the genre fences with a memorable turn in Adam Wingard's The Guest and he's been popping up everywhere since then.
One of the many projects on his docket is Kill Switch (not to be confused with the Steven Seagal masterpiece of the same name), the directorial debut of VFX artist Tim Smit.
The sci-fi actioner stars Stevens as Will Porter, a pilot who fights to save his family after an experiment to create unlimited energy goes wrong. If you managed to get any of that plotting from the trailer, you're definitely reading some sublimi [Continued ...]...

"This is the opportunity to explore impossible frontiers." What the heck is this? Saban Films has released a very weird teaser trailer for a sci-fi film titled Kill Switch (not related to the Steven Seagal action film Kill Switch). This one is actually based on a Pov concept short film called What's in the Box?, which a visual effects supervisor has turned into a feature-length film. And it still has some video game-esque Pov shots in it. Dan Stevens stars, with Charity Wakefield, and Bérénice Marlohe. I don't even know what is going on in this trailer, only that Dan Stevens plays a pilot, and there's very weird sci-fi stuff happening. Fire it up. Here's the first teaser trailer for Tim Smit's Kill Switch, direct from YouTube (via Tmb): A pilot (Dan Stevens) battles to save his family and the planet after an experiment for unlimited energy goes wrong.

Raoul Peck’s documentary about the life and work of James Baldwin is a stunning tribute to the writer’s vital work. Even thirty years after his death, Baldwin’s words still cut to the heart of issues confronting American society. With performances of Baldwin’s writing from narrator Samuel L. Jackson, Peck provides a deeply human gateway to understanding the achievements and contributions of a man who still has much to say about how our country understands race.

[Originally appeared in Deadly Magazine #5] In 1993, The X-Files premiered on Fox, forever changing genre television, and after 20 years, its influence is still felt. No series since The X-Files has even come close to creating such incredibly nuanced and compelling storytelling than what Chris Carter’s series delivered each week for nine seasons.
What made The X-Files so remarkable was that it hit the ground running from its first episode and maintained that momentum. While Seasons 8 and 9 aren’t remembered fondly by fans, I’d argue that the storytelling still remained strong until the series finale in May 2002.
Known generally for its overarching alien and governmental conspiracy plots, The X-Files always managed to find clever and unusual ways to celebrate so many horror and sci-fi tropes, much like its predecessors (The Twilight Zone and Kolchak: The Night Stalker influenced Carter when he was first conceiving the series in the early ’90’s.)

Pamela Anderson headlined Barb Wire, an 18-certificate comic book movie from the 1990s. How does it hold up?
I like to write silly articles about terrible films, but I prefer to write silly articles that go on about how much I’ve enjoyed a film that most people wouldn’t bother with. Den of Geek will often send me odd films with rotten reputations and it’s always my hope that I’m going to get something like Chuck Norris’ Invasion U.S.A., which is kind of out there but also kind of brilliant. More often, though, I’ll end up with a Santa With Muscles or a Nick Fury: Agent Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
When I read silly film look backs that other people have written around the internet, I’ll sometimes come away with the impression that the person has set out to trash an easy target.

Castle devotes its most recent episode to the Ryan/Esposito bromance that's been a mainstay of the show for seasons...
This review contains spoilers.
7.18 At Close Range
Yes, we love Caskett. Caskett is the reason we watch Castle. But it’s certainly not the only ‘ship we enjoy. When the writers have made us crazy by keeping Caskett apart and we’d thought, “Screw this, I’m out!” who kept us coming back?
That’s right: the bromance of Ryan and Esposito. They are just as funny, just as smart, and just as devoted (both to each other and Rick and Kate) as Caskett, but they never, ever break up or pretend not to hear the other when hovering near death. They always come through, even when that other couple leave us hanging, angry and/or frustrated.
And why not? Ryan and Esposito are both stand-up guys, dedicated to their jobs,...

Castle finally delivers a satisfying, surprising Christmas and mafia-themed episode. Here's Laura's review of Bad Santa...
This review contains spoilers.
7.10 Bad Santa
What a relief!
This season of Castle has not been one of their best. From ridiculous plots (involving inter-dimensional travel) to non-existent ones (where any useful evidence is withheld until seconds before the killer is revealed) to the explanation that is nothing of the kind (Rick ran away from last season’s wedding to do what exactly?), it’s been pretty disappointing. So honesty, I wasn’t expecting much this last week. And that’s especially sad considering the episode, Bad Santa, includes two actors I generally love: Vincent Spano and Paul Ben-Victor. But their appearances did have me expecting a mafia-related episode, and I think that was probably the only thing I guessed right. I was certainly wrong about the level of quality I expected.

This week's Castle takes its name from a 90s Arnie action spoof, but does it deliver on that meta promise? Here's Laura's review...

7.9 Last Action Hero
Sometimes, the hardest thing about reviewing something is overcoming the expectations that you take in with you. In some cases, this is purely a result of the individual makeup of the reviewer. In others, it’s because the producers created those expectations. For me, this week, with Castle, it’s both. And that’s because a) the writers chose to title last week’s episode Last Action Hero, and b) I may be the only critic alive to have really enjoyed the 1993 John McTiernan film of the same name, starring/spoofing Arnold Schwarzenegger.
What sold me on the movie, aside from Charles Dance as a dastardly villain and its metanarrative, was its satire. As an action-movie fan who is also...

A promising premise turns into a mess in this disappointing episode. Here's Laura's review...

7.8 Kill Switch
One of the things that Castle generally does fairly well is plotting. While much of the minutiae of writing on the show - the dialogue, the characterization, the explication - often fails to hit the mark, Castle has brought us some really imaginative crimes even as it rides the lines between Rick’s unbelievable criminal fantasy and Kate's extremely pedestrian realism. It also does a great job at giving most of us that wonderfully self-congratulatory moment of “a-ha!” just a bit before all the pieces fall into place for our detectives.
Kill Switch, on the other hand, does neither.
The episode starts out promisingly enough as when the murder of Paul Reeves, a Gao investigator, in the park leads to an Occupy-style economic activist. Esposito and Ryan are on his...

In this Esposito-centric episode, we get a lot more of the recurring female characters, as well as a bit of a health scare reminiscent of recent events. We start with our newlyweds arriving to their first crime scene since the honeymoon. “You still remind me a little of Hooch” was a great callback not only to season 2, but also to the former Opening Narration (it’s been a while, so if you forgot, it began: “There are two kinds of folk who sit around and think about how to kill people – psychopaths and mystery writers. I’m the kind that pays better”). Our victim, Paul, was found on a park bench with a shot to the head. Castle and Beckett speak to his brother, who says Paul worked a lot at a government job, where he’d recently gotten a disturbing call with a scheduled meet-up that very morning. His boss…...

This week on ABC’s Castle, Detective Esposito found himself on the wrong track, held hostage on a subway train by a man with a mysterious agenda.
Because of news preemptions at the top of the hour, I was not privy to the catalyst for Espo’s subterranean ordeal — something about someone who was killed for investigating a lab? — but the gist of the episode remained largely decipherable. Besides, the main question here was how Espo (and his new transit cop friend) might extricate themselves and the (oddly scant number of!) other riders from this tense standoff, while at the...

Update: This post has been updated to reflect the fact that Castle will air the sixth episode of its seventh season next Monday, Nov. 10. Last fans heard of Castle's disappearance, Castle was being warned that he might not want the truth. And according to showrunner David Amann, the truth isn't going to reveal itself anytime soon considering that Castle's disappearance won't be revisited in the next four episodes. However, Amann did promise that we'll come into contact with it again in the near future. And when we do, fans don't need to be worried about the truth messing with Castle and Beckett's relationship.

Fans of Katherine Heigl’s early days as Izzie on Grey’s Anatomy (like, when she was a smartmouthed doctor, before she got cancer and started hallucinating sex with her dead boyfriend) and even earlier days as an alien on Roswell, have no doubt been hoping she can dig herself out of the romantic comedy hole she’s dug herself in recent years. And at last, after this months’ New Year’s Eve and next month’s One for the Money, she’s taking a giant leap out of that hole. Today, TheFABlife has learned that she’s attached to star as a forensic psychiatrist in Kill Switch, the movie adaptation of the psychological thriller by former Law & Order: Svu exec producer Neal Baer and co-exec Jonathan Greene.

During his 11-year reign as Law & Order: Svu's executive producer, Neal Baer dissected the horrors of nearly every sex-crime scenario imaginable. But there's one story he never tackled. "We never explored on Svu what it's like for the child of a child molester to deal with what their parent has done," says Baer, who now executive produces CBS's A Gifted Man. "The legacy haunts the child of the molester as well as the molester's victim."

Law & Order executive producer/showrunner Neal Baer is making his novel writing debut with a series of 3 books. The novels, which Baer is writing with Svu co-executive producer Jonathan Greene, have been sold to Kensington. The medical thriller books, the first of which is titled Kill Switch, are set in the world of forensic psychiatry, an area previously explored by Silence of the Lambs, among others. They are slated to be published in January of 2012, 2013 and 2014. The series centers on Claire Waters, a young forensic psychiatrist. Baer, a pediatrician by trade, had had some training in psychiatry and, during his tenure on Svu, he has talked to many forensic psychiatrists. "I became interested in the science behind what makes a criminal mind. Claire is driven to understand the scientific explanation of why people would commit a crime," he said. The books stem from a feature outline Baer and Greene wrote 8 years ago.

Greg Louganis swims for equality, Ronnie Kroell's busy month, and Kris Allen has a cow.
Gale Harold recently sat down with Rage to reflect on his time on Queer As Folk. He seems to have a profound respect for the role, and for his character. I can vividly remember what he says his favorite scene is: “There’s a scene that Sharon and I did in my loft smoking a joint. … I feel it’s some of the best work that I did in the show. It’s a moment where Brian is so alone. He actually gets to jack into someone in a way that’s just about love, you know? It’s about what he couldn’t get from his own family; he got it from his best friend’s mother. I think that’s a beautiful thing.”

In a rather desperate and intrusive attempt to quell piracy, the collective forces of Hollywood have been revving themselves up to put their weight behind a new anti-bootlegging solution. So far, that sounds okay, I would hope you’d agree. It’s what the solution entails that turns the stomach. Nicknamed the Kill Switch, the Selectable Output Control device is a system by which certain outputs on your cable box or DVR – or, frankly, whatever player of any kind that they could force the specification onto – would be turned off when films or programming with a risk of piracy are being played. Essentially, if you were to turn your cable box over to see some studio film on one of the movie channels, half of the outputs on your system would be instantly disabled. The problem is that this can’t happen without some nasty side-effects. One, this will limit...

Don't panic, residents of the U.S. of A., your interWeb is safe: Soon 10,000 young cyber warriors will be bravely donning their unifo... uh, T-shirts, and clambering into their cockpi... uh, desks, ready to defend your networks from the bad guys.
Or something like that. Concerned that network security will have to be beefed up as the potential for a future cyber war mounts, the DoD, in collaboration with academics and industry, is planning to recruit 10,000 people to cyber security posts. A kerfuffle hit the Internets on Friday, as news that Amazon had remotely wiped thousands of copies of 1984 and Animal Farm from people's Kindle e-readers hit. As with many Internet rumors though, it entirely missed the point.
Independent publisher MobileReference was behind the issue--it had copies of the two George Orwell classics on sale via Amazon's Kindle bookstore for a bargain price of $0.99. But, after several thousand copies had been sold, Amazon discovered that the copyright of the two works was in question, and that MobileReference wasn't authorized to distribute the two texts in the U.S.--despite their copyright having long expired in other countries. So Amazon did what it could--far more than a physical bookstore would do if it found itself in a similar situation--it issued a command to delete the offending copies on its user's devices and refund their money.
And that's what caused the blogs to explode with witty headlines.

Moviehole is reporting that Sylvester Stallone tried to get many other actors for his "The Expendables" film, who ended up declining his offers. According to the site, Jackie Chan was asked to be in the movie and so was Wesley Snipes. And everyone knows that Jean Claude Van-Damme turned down the chance to be in "The Expendables" in favor of some straight-to-dvd flicks. But did you know that Steven Seagal was incredibly close to being cast. Apparently, Seagal was ripped off by producer Avi Lerner a few years back and Seagal now doesn't want to work with the man again. The two previously made "Mercenary for Justice," "Today You Die" and "Kill Switch" and if "The Expendables" went into development a year ago, Seagal would definitely have been on board. Finally, Bruce Willis was approached to appear in the film as well. And he accepted. Willis is now trying to...

Formerly one of the top action movie stars of the ’90s, Steven Seagal has spent the last several years phoning it in, starring in a stream of direct-to-dvd movies which, with only a few exceptions, are all terrible. “Kill Switch” is not one of those few exceptions, but it is a rare film that falls into the “so bad it’s hilarious” category, making it a must-see for all Seagal fans. In this film, Seagal plays police detective Jacob King and puts on his horrible Southern accent once again. He’s on the trail of two different serial killers. One is named Billy Joe, and he likes to blow up his victims with C-4. In fact, he surgically implants the explosives under his victim’s skin. The movie even opens with Seagal dealing with a bomb embedded between a female victim’s bountiful cleavage. Well, to be honest, even though...

Congress is considering legislation that could give the President power to shut down large swaths of domestic Internet traffic, should he perceive a threat to national security.
The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 would give the government increased oversight in areas of "critical" Web infrastructure like banking, energy and telecommunications. The latter industry encompasses most private Internet service providers, meaning that officials could use the legislation as a kill switch over privately-owned networks. The bill is being introduced concomitantly with a second bill that would create a cabinet-level cybersecurity post in the White House.
Ironically, the nation's increasing need for cyber-vigilance is partially a result of new plans to make other infrastructures more advanced. Digital health records, smart electric grids and smarter traffic-management systems will all pose new security threats once brought online.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation has published an editorial condemning the legislation, saying that the biggest weaknesses in government cyber-security--lack of encryption,...

Update: Ain't It Cool News is reporting the news on the scrapping of The Green Hornet is false and Chow is still attached and things remain moving forward. A pair of feature film casualties may be on the horizon; one that never even began shooting and another that was set to hit theaters on October 23. First off is news from HitFix citing a source that says Seth Rogen's Green Hornet is on shaky ground and that "it is 'highly unlikely' that the film will shoot in 2009 at all." HitFix's Drew McWeeny reports he spoke with several people at Sundance saying the film was completely off. The complete story is hardly revealed, but once Stephen Chow dropped off as director and was rumored to be potentially dropping out completely after being attached to co-star as Kato, the role once played by the late Bruce Lee. The other film is Summit Entertainment...

Listen, I always liked Steven Seagal movies. They were simple and pure. It seems like there.s no reason they can.t continue that formula with these straight to video ones, though I have yet to see another Hard to Kill. I haven.t seen them all, but the latest, Kill Switch is a step up from Marked for Death or Half Past Dead.
The fact that Seagal wrote the screenplay really excites me. Unfortunately, there.s no environmental message this time, but he definitely knows the formula of an overdog hero who doesn.t have to undergo any change to stop all the bad guys. I mean, he.s got some dead family members, so that.s where it all starts.
