No Skill or Special Knowledge Is Required
Prismark1028 October 2018
The Talking to a Stranger plays for television written by John Hopkins gave an early role to Dame Judi Dench.

In the second of four plays; No Skill or Special Knowledge Is Required the focus is on Ted Stevens 'Father' played by Maurice Denham.

He fought in the war, now living in a suburban house. He deals with the demands of his wife and his daughter Terry. In his head he goes through the events and arguments of the past. Terry was attacked and violated. She is now living in a squalid flat having married a black man. His son Alan is thinking of emigrating to Australia for work.

The main focus is his relationship with his wife. You sense they were never happily married and he had a stronger relationship with his daughter which upset his wife.

In his old age Ted is dealing with family strife that he rather wished he did not had to.

Despite their lower middle class setting, this is a kitchen sink drama. There are raw emotions and this is evident from Dench's character. When shown in 1966, I can imagine it demonstrated the evolving state of the medium of television.
