A kitsch video

An enigmatic and almost abstract video by The Smiths and directed by Tim Broad, "Girlfriend in a Coma" presents Morrissey in great colors at the same time clips from the classic Brit film "The Leather Boys" (1964) which revolves around a troubled girl. Possibly the one we have to imagine being as the lovely girl in a Coma.

As usual with The Smiths the power comes from the music and lyrics and not necessarily from the images (and most of us know Morrissey passion for old films and imagery, so he probably provided some input along with Broad about the video ideas. The music is certainly magical and surrealistic brutal yet slightly charming. And the video just fits in to create a more profound experience to viewers. And let's face it only Moz can sing it with perfection and the right balance - I tried it on karaoke and it's bloody hard to stay in pitch. Thumbs up to the video. 7/10
