I know, I know. There are already more than enough Top 10 Movies of 2009 lists on the Internet, why should you care about another one? Well, for starters, it's a list; they take 10 seconds to scan for highlights. But even beyond that, you should mouse over this link and click because the lists I'm talking about are a little more interesting than the ones on KylesMovieReviews.blogspot.com. They come by way of the brilliant (and remarkably friendly) brains that turn the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas into a mecca for film buffs: the programmers.
Tim League, Lars Nilsen, Henri Mazza, Zack Carlson, Brad Parrett, and Daniel Metz have all offered up their selections for the finest of cinema last year had to give us and, sticking with Drafthouse tradition, their choices are a bit more eclectic than usual. For example, only one of the gents gave placement to Oscar front runner Up in the Air,

Why the Academy Will Ignore Nicolas Cage and Tilda Swinton's Oscar-worthy Turns

Uncaged: Nicolas Cage in Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.
With a month to go before the Oscar nominations are even made public, the victors in the acting categories have virtually already been decided. The best actor race isn’t much of one thanks to the consensus that Jeff Bridges is “due” an Oscar and Crazy Heart is the vehicle that’ll deliver it. Meanwhile, supporting categories are historically kind to fresh faces, and thus outsiders Mo’nique and Christoph Waltz have their two races on lockdown, without even showing up to campaign. That so much seems to have been preordained in the preseason takes a lot of the fun out of watching the races unfold. It also all but ensures that the two best performances of the year, committed to celluloid by two previous Oscar winners lacking the heat of the new or the weight

Alamo programmers’ Top 10 of ‘09…plus Top 20 of the Decade!

The picture to the left has nothing to do with anything released in the last ten years, but it is from a movie.
Here in the Alamo programming office, movies are a big deal. We each watch approximately 215 movies per day, seven days a week, no holidays.
It’s a tough job…especially when it comes time to narrow down our favorites at the end of each year. It’s even more difficult to figure out what the best 20 films were in the past decade. But we do it all for you.
The lists below represent the most powerful and/or entertaining films of 2009, plus the finest we’ve seen since Y2K destroyed civilization. Take a look, disagree, get furious and attack us on the street.
Warning: We’ve got switchblades.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition (read that here) and was unfortunately unimpressed. At 81 minutes I expected a brisk and entertaining film, but what I got was a film that runs about 20 minutes too long and seemed to get worse and worse as the remaining minutes ticked away.
The Final Destination
I can't bring myself to watch what I truly hope is the final installment in this frachise again. I was extremely disappointed in this film after my interest was piqued at Comic Con last year. Oh well, can't win 'em all.
Trucker
Now here's a film that isn't all that bad, but I would only recommend it as a rental at this point. You can read my review for a complete breakdown, but in short it's a well-acted film that falls apart

[Just when you thought the onslaught of Year End lists had come to an end here comes another. We welcome Mitch Davis - head of International Programming at Montreal's Fantasia Festival and a very good friend to this site - with his year end wrap up.]
Ignore the grumpy naysayers who groan that 2009 was a weak year for world cinema. Nothing could be further from the truth. Below are my top 11 picks, personal favourites among favourites (a top 30 list would have been unwieldy!). It bears mentioning that at the time of this writing, I've not yet seen The White Ribbon, Mother, Il Divo, Symbol, Vermillion Souls or Accident, to name but a few. In other words, this list, like all lists, is an incomplete snapshot.
11. In The Loop
If there was a funnier film this year, I must have missed it. Subversive, acerbic and gut-wrenchingly hilarious, like Dr Strangelove meets The Office. Incredible.
10. Drag Me To Hell
Sam Raimi's volume-eleven return to the genre is everything much of us had been hoping for: a grossout EC-comic rollercoaster that combines Grand Guignol horror, loopy wide-eyed humour and extreme physical trauma to make an epic of morbidly

As of 1/01/10, I have not seen “important” movies like The Lovely Bones, The White Ribbon, The Messenger, Broken Embraces, It’s Complicated, and Dance Flick.

Here at Film Junk we value your opinion just as much as our own (most of the time!), so for the past few years we've been doing an annual poll to determine the best movies of the year in a variety of genres and categories. This year we had the most participants yet, so hopefully the results will truly reflect the views of the majority of Film Junk's readers and listeners.
As always, even though we made an effort to keep each category competitive, there were still some movies that won by a landslide -- the Drama, Sci-Fi Action and Documentary categories in particular were no contest. By far the tightest race was the Foreign Film category, with just a few votes separating all five nominees. So, without any further ado, feast your eyes on the full list of winners for the 2009 Film Junk Reader's Choice Awards.

While many critics are rolling out or have rolled out their Top 10 movies of the year or even the decade, I found myself devising my own and realizing that they seem to be more or less similar to others'. Where the Wild Things Are, Inglourious Basterds, Up, The Hurt Locker, A Serious Man... These are great, great movies that have gotten their dose of attention, thanks to the names behind them. So what are the ones left in the dust?
The following movies are all considered 2009 movies by their Us theatrical date. All of them, however, received only limited releases and never went wide. These are my favorites of the year that, if you haven't heard of them or was never given the chance to see them, I highly recommend hunting down on DVD. They are absolutely worth it.
