Jake Arnott's novel and this TV adaptation are based on the real-life murder of three police officers in Braybrook Street, Shepherd's Bush, London on 12 August 1966 by Harry Roberts, John Duddy and Jack Witney. Roberts was released from prison in 2014 after serving nearly 48 years, Duddy died in prison and Witney was found beaten to death after his release from prison. The character of Billy Porter is based on Roberts.
The title "He Kills Coppers" is taken from a chant used by football crowds to taunt police officers who are keeping order at football matches.
Ironically, actor Stanley Townsend who stars in the film, was in episode 6 season 3 of Ashes to Ashes, in which he is a cop killer.
