- A wonderful journey through the meaning and relevance of film music composition. Featuring great, albeit brief, insights from some of the modern greats.
- "Dan Lieberstein, a veteran hollywood music supervisor, takes to the director's chair with a rich insightful documentary about one of the least discussed aspects of filmmaking: the composing process. Composers Carter Burwell, Elliot Goldenthal, and Terence Blanchard and directors Ang Lee, Spike Lee and Francis Ford Coppola are among those who provide a nuts-and-bolts look at the process of marrying music and images. The passion and expertise that inform their comments make this an absolute must see for any self respecting film buff." - quoted from the Time Out review.
Lights Action Music does not attempt to be a comprehensive look at all composers but rather a comprehensive look at the composing process - anyone who was truly familiar with the composing process would know that a historical documentary on all composers would have to be 5 or 6 hours long. What it does do, however, is allow you to glimpse each phase of what a real composing experience is like. It gives the novice an inside look at what every composer has in common - the types of problems and processes that they ALL must go through on their creative journey. The nuts and bolts as Time Out magazine put it. Sure there are composers who are missing but that is not the point - it's a view of the true composing process not a tribute to any one composer.
