Timothee Chalamet's first two performances were in gruesome period horror shorts. CLOWN has slightly better production values perhaps--some of the props in BUTCHER'S HILL appear rather cheap, and the pile of confections the two children come across look decidedly twentieth-century and mass produced--but BUTCHER'S HILL functions slightly better as a scary story. The final moments are effectively creepy, even if the whole story is an extremely well-worn and predictable fairy tale.
BUTCHER'S HILL will also more effectively satisfy anyone who's interested in seeing a very early Chalamet performance. There's nothing especially good or bad about it, but a single shot in which he does a terrified reaction shot does convey the excellent, expressive actor he'd grow up to be.
