Filmmaker Sriram Raghavan, who is known for films like ‘Andhadhun’, ‘Johnny Gaddaar’, ‘Agent Vinod’, ‘Ek Hasina Thi’ and others, recently attended the Jio Mami Mumbai Film Festival panel for ‘Word to Screen’ discussing the possibilities of the screen adaptations of written material.
It’s often said that films don’t do complete justice to the books on which they’re based on given the time constraint.
However, the medium of long-format storytelling like television series or a streaming series comes with enough bandwidth with regards to time and exploring deeper nuances of a book.
However, Sriram feels that it’s not always that a book translates extremely well on screen. For him, it’s a very “case specific” thing.
The filmmaker said, “Books are an entirely different medium. How good the adaptation of a book to screen is it’s a very case specific thing. There have been many examples...

It is going to be an interesting weekend at the box office. Badlapur hits the screens and what works for it is the fact that the promotion has been absolutely bang on target. Despite the fact that it features Varun Dhawan in the lead, there has been no attempt made to overtly commercialize it by turning it into a quintessential Bollywood potboiler. Hence, there has been no attempt made to add on item number or sensationalize it by bringing in elements that are typically plugged in by PR channels. As a result, Badlapur pretty much acts as a film where you are expected to get what has been promised.
The film is aiming for a target audience which is not looking for yet another bubblegum entertainer from Varun but instead waiting to see what Sriram Raghavan, director of films like Ek Haseena Thi and Johnny Gaddaar, has to offer with...

The father of two, who gave up a business degree course in the Us in order to switch to drama school, talks to Udita Jhunjhunwala about working in both TV and film
As an actor, isn?t it limiting for you to be always associated with comedy?
I think is unfair that that is the case but that is the perception because Bheja Fry was a huge hit and comparatively Dasvidaniya was not as big a hit. The majority of my TV career was also lighter and comedy-related, plus...

He has always played intense and serious roles, but not many know that Bollywood actor Neil Nitin Mukesh has a humorous side which he would like to explore in films. The actor is keen to do situational comedies. 'I would love to be a part of a comedy film but it is very important what type of comedy the film has to offer. I can't bang my head here and there and make people laugh,' Neil told Ians on phone from Mumbai. 'I would love to be a part of a situational comedy, something like 'Hera Pheri',' he added. Five-films-old Neil has garnered plenty of critical acclaim with serious roles in his films 'Johnny Gaddaar', 'Aa Dekhen Zara', 'Jail', 'New York' and 'Lafangey Parindey' but off-screen the actor admits he is a clown. 'I am a clown off-screen and keep...

Is Neil Nitin Mukesh not really getting a heart burn now that his Tera Kya Hoga Johny has been indefinitely put on a backburner? If one is in his shoes, it won't be a far fetched thought after all. To think of it, the film has been in the making since the inception of his career. He had signed the film around the same time when he did Johnny Gaddaar (2007), his debut film. Ever since then he had waited for the film to make some progress but there were numerous issues that Tera Kya...

'Lafangey Parindey' (2010)
Starring Deepika Padukone, Neil Nitin Mukesh
He boxes blindfolded, she's a blind dancer. He teaches her to see, she teaches him to feel—at least, that's what the movie tries, and fails, to convey. In fact, there's no feeling at all in this latest glossy romance to come out of the Yash Raj production house.
The problems begin with the casting. The elegant Deepika Padukone was perfect as the dream girl in 'Om Shanti Om' (2007) and a chic urbanite in 'Love Aaj Kal' (2009), but here she's too polished and put-together to pull off a rough-around-the-edges, working-class girl. And Neil Nitin Mukesh—who was gripping as a scared-witless college student in the terrorist thriller 'New York' (2009)—looks more like Bambi than a boxer.
That's not to say that Mukesh's dewy doe eyes and flawless bone structure doom him to play innocent boys-next-door. He's...

His last film, Jail, may not have been a box-office bumper, but Neil Nitin Mukesh is unfazed. He points out that while it’s important for a film to work commercially, he does not feel the need to go into a postmortem about how much his film earned. “Jail was a small budget film and did not lose money. It was well spoken about and I’ve been offered another film by the same production house for double the amount. After Johnny Gaddaar, people were calling me Johnny, after New York, I was Omar, and after Jail, Parag,” he smiles, adding that ...

Hollywood is in the throes of remake fever. So far this year, we've seen the release of 'Clash of the Titans,' 'The A-Team,' 'The Karate Kid,' and 'Robin Hood.' Other remakes on deck or rumored to be in the works include 'Red Dawn,' 'Footloose,' 'Private Benjamin,' 'Conan the Barbarian,' 'Police Academy,' 'Romancing the Stone,' 'Slap Shot,' 'Arthur,' 'The Birds,' 'National Lampoon's Vacation,' 'Creature from the Black Lagoon,' and 'Total Recall.'
The American film industry is slated to release about 75 remakes in 2010, and while that number is unusually high, remakes are nothing new in Hollywood. Some are outstanding films—'Cape Fear' (1991), for example. And some are painfully bad—such as 'Planet of the Apes' (2001).
Moviegoers love to bemoan remakes—never as good as the original,...

Saif Ali Khan has been rigorously training in the most complex martial arts for his role as a spy in Sriram Raghavan's Agent Vinod. Saif's latest acquisition to amplify the scope of his action scenes will make our other action stars go green with envy. It would certainly disappoint Vivek Oberoi to hear that Saif has beaten Vivek into getting the Prince Of Persia action director Cedric Proust to do the stunts in Agent Vinod. Vivek's producers had planned to bring Proust for the sequel to Prince. Confirming this development Agent Vinod director Sriram Raghavan says, "Yes, Cedric Proust who has done many big Hollywood action films in Morocco did Saif's action scenes in Morocco and Afghanistan. We plan to hire another leading action director for Saif's action scenes in England and an Indian one for the stunts in Delhi. In this way we hope to economize on the...

Neil Nitin Mukesh is someone who happens to be one of the most prominent faces among the Gen-next breed of actors. Hailing from a filmy family, he made a rocking debut in Johnny Gaddaar. He later followed it up with brilliant performances in films like Aa Dekhen Zara, New York and Jail. These days, Neil is one helluva' busy man. If he is not shooting films, the actor is busy signing the dotted lines as the brand ambassador. After having lent his face to almost a dozen products, Neil has now been chosen as the brand ambassador for Gen X Vests. Sources close to Bollywood Hungama say that, Neil was chosen purely on the basis of his squeaky-clean and decent image, both on screen and off screen, a requite that the company officials were keen on. Looks like Neil is definitely basking in the sunshine when the sun is shining bright,...

The very name of Neil brings to your mind the face of the handsome actor with a personality and a voice to match (in that order!). After having made his debut with the hit film Johnny Gaddaar, Neil went onto become the mainstay of Bollywood films. Following the trend of Bollywood celebs turning to brand endorsements, Neil too started off with a bang. After having endorsed a leading brand of shoes followed by watches, this time round, Neil has now been chosen as the brand ambassador of 'Addiction perfumes' by Mankind Pharma. Sources close to Bollywood Hungama cling on the rumor that Neil, besides shooting a superhot ad for brand, has also been paid a whopping amount to endorse the product. As we have always said, Bolly stars are surely having a field day with the brands!

He’s the son of playback singer Nitin Mukesh, an avid photographer and a ‘risk taker’ – someone who played a negative role in his very first movie. That film – Johnny Gaddaar – was a surprise sleeper hit, and launched Neil Nitin Mukesh into Bollywood in 2007. He followed it up with Aa Dekhen Zara, New York and Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail, which featured a nude scene later chopped by the censors. Neil’s next releases are Aditya Chopra’s Lafange Parinde and Thank U, the desi version of the Hollywood flick, The Italian Job. He’s also signed ...
