The very idea of war is insane. We send young people with limited life experience to fight in foreign lands, where they neither speak the language nor understand the culture, and expect what exactly? It's often a recipe for disaster.
We mitigate this risk through leadership. Junior officers (trained to manage young troops) are assigned to platoons and companies in the field, while senior officers are charged with planning, coordinating, and directing combat operations -- often at a great distance from the battlefield. It's a system that is most effective when applied to lightning-fast assaults and aggressive apprehension of territory, but woefully ill-suited to long-term occupation, which is where we find ourselves today in Iraq and Afghanistan, with no clear end in sight.

Unfortunately, that's life in the modern military, particularly for infantry, engineers, medics, and other combat-facing units.

Arrow continues its strong start to its sophomore season, wasting no time in revealing the identity of Black Canary (Caity Lotz) and establishing an interesting dynamic between her and Oliver (Stephen Amell). The show has really grown since the first season, where that particular reveal may have been dragged out across two or three episodes. In season two, having found its stride, gets straight to the point about Sarah Lance but still manages to maintain a bit of mystery that will keep viewers coming back next week. Kudos to the Arrow writers team. "Oliver discovers a man who goes by the name “The Mayor” (guest star Cle Bennett) is bringing illegal guns in to The Glades, so Oliver sponsors a “Cash for Guns” event to help clean up the city. Unfortunately, The Mayor crashes the event with his gang and seriously injures Sin (guest star Bex Taylor-Klaus).

Before he could talk about any of the details, "Rookie Blue" co-star Gregory Smith said the episode he directed this season was "big."
He wasn't kidding.
"Under Fire," Thursday's (Sept. 5) intense chapter of the ABC police drama, was the first half of the show's Season 4 finale -- and though it seems a cliche to say it put most of the regular characters in the line of fire, it truly did. And no one knew that more in the opening moments than Andy and Chloe (Missy Peregrym, Priscilla Faia).
The hour began on a light note with the gang playing trivia at The Black Penny, and Chloe won. Things started veering toward the serious as Gail (Charlotte Sullivan) found Holly (Aliyah O'Brien) waiting there to meet someone else, while at home, Andy told Nick (Peter Mooney) of her ongoing guilt over having doctored Marlo's (Rachael Ancheril) police memo book at Sam's (Ben Bass) urging.

Sometimes, handling one thing yields something bigger.
Such was Oliver's (Matt Gordon) fortune in mediating a neighborhood domestic dispute in the opening moments of Thursday's (Aug. 22) ABC "Rookie Blue" episode, "You Are Here." After apparently resolving the discord -- which the husband admitted could have been because he "forgot our anniversary" (whoops!) -- Oliver noticed an odd, "super-skunky" smell.
He and partner du jour Gail (Charlotte Sullivan) then uncovered a "grow-op," or as Sam (Ben Bass) put it, a house "swimming in illegal marijuana plants." And a smart-alecky young suspect named Chuck (Doug Smith) was taken into custody and turned over to Chloe (Priscilla Faia), alias -- at least for this story -- "the booking fairy."
Meanwhile, Andy (Missy Peregrym) told Nick (Peter Mooney) her concerns about feeling "sneaky" about their secretive new romance. When he offered to tell his ex Gail about it, Andy insisted on being the one...

"We knew this was coming. Diaz is gone, and he isn't coming back."
Such was Sgt. Frank Best's (Lyriq Bent) greeting as he informed the other rookies of Chris' (Travis Milne) departure at the start of "Skeletons," Thursday''s (July 25) episode of ABC's "Rookie Blue." As they registered their surprise -- particularly Dov (Gregory Smith), who had done his best to change Chris' mind -- Best added, "People come, people go, so you might as well get used to it."
Indeed: ABC's press information already confirms Diaz will be a big part of the Aug. 15 episode. Meanwhile, another familiar face returned to 15 Division as Detective Luke Callaghan's (Eric Johnson) reappeared to help direct a kidnapping investigation, one with huge reverberations for the cops.
The apparent victim had been taken in a cab registered to Ross Perik (Ben Carlson), last season's perp who kidnapped Gail (Charlotte Sullivan) and fatally stabbed her would-be rescuer,...

For the hard-working actor, director and producer, Jason Priestley is a man of many talents and he has stretched out his varied career to not only encompass many entertainment career “hats,” but also an array of diverse characters that keeps him busy. Taking a few minutes out of his jam-packed schedule, Jason provided a few candid responses about his morally-challenged, yet highly entertaining character Richard Fitzpatrick in the Canadian comedy series Call Me Fitz, as well as some brief thoughts on his upcoming appearance in Stephen King’s Bag Of Bones and Syfy’s supernatural thriller series Haven.
How did you initially learn about Call Me Fitz and how did you become involved with it?
Jason: I was directing a web series for Warner Bros. called The Lake and our writers had just worked with Sheri Elwood on Defying Gravity. They told me about her and this show that she had written.

The third season of Top Shot is kicking off tomorrow, and I hope you're going to be tuning in. I have a rundown of the new contestants for you, and a special giveaway of a Top Shot branded iPhone case so you can show off your support of the show.
The contestants look like a good crop this season, even though this is a show that seems to have the opposite problem of most reality competition shows, at least from my perspective. As these series continue with further seasons, it seems to me that the contestants have continually increasing levels of competence, and that doesn't generally work for me. I don't really want to watch the cooking, design, or fashion show that is built around contestants who are already firmly entrenched in the field.
Top Shot doesn't really have any option though, even though there are contestants who are "amateurs,...

Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright
Director: Duncan Jones
Summary: A decorated soldier discovers he's part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. The experiment is a program that enables him to re-live another man's identity in the last eight minutes of his life which he must do repeatedly to find the truth.
Analysis: Two years ago British filmmaker Duncan Jones delivered his indie debut feature "Moon", a little seen but critically acclaimed sci-fi tale that was essentially Sam Rockwell acting alone or against himself. It was fresh, innovative, somber and overall heralded the arrival of a director to watch out for. After failing to secure funding for his next project, Jones quickly hopped onto the helm of this high-concept action/time travel blockbuster.
Naturally came the calls of Jones being a sell out, after all the...

The Hangover: Part Two
Opens: May 26th 2011
Cast: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifinakis, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong
Director: Todd Phillips
Summary: Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things don’t always go as planned.
Analysis: It really wasn't until about three months before its release that Warner Brothers realised "The Hangover" was going to be a hit. Test screening response was through the roof, while the trailer had great reaction after premiering at ShoWest and online. About that time they commissioned director Todd Phillips, along with his "Old School" and "Road Trip" scribe Scot Armstrong, to pen a sequel. Yet they still waited to see how the first one went before fully committing to the follow-up.
The wait didn't last long.
