Sgt. Rock Adaptation Set on Fast Forward

11 November 2009 1:30 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Producer Akiva Goldsman is already involved in the production of four comic book movie adaptations, including Jonah Hex, The Losers, Lobo, and Swamp Thing, and now he's attached to a fifth. Goldsman is joining Joel Silver in his decades-long quest to bring DC Comics' WWII hero, Sgt. Rock, to the big screen.

Only, Rock and his "Easy Company" are not going to be slogging through the trenches fighting Nazis in war-torn Europe. According to THR, the Sgt. Rock movie will be set in the future. Previously envisioned as a Dirty Dozen-esque "authentic" war film, the change of time period and locale is said to be reflective of the lack of interest by moviegoers in period war films.

Silver had previously enlisted Guy Ritchie to script and direct Sgt. Rock, but Ritchie has moved on to direct Lobo with Silver so Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) has been brought in to front the film. »

Matt Damon & Josh Brolin In Talks For ‘True Grit’ Remake

27 October 2009 7:02 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Variety is reporting that Matt Damon and Josh Brolin are in talks to join the previously announced Jeff Bridges in the Coen Bros.’ remake of the John Wayne classic, True Grit. On top of directing, the Coens have also written the script (as they do with virtually all their films) which is said to be more faithful to the original Charles Portis novel than the 1969 film.

Bridges was previously announced as being in talks to play U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn (played originally by Wayne) and that appears to still be the case. If cast, Damon would play the lawman (called La Boeuf in the original, played by Glen Campbell) who teams up with Cogburn, while Brolin would play the man who kills a 14-year old girl’s father. The girl has yet to be cast.

Adding to writing and directing duties, the Coens will also produce True Grit alongside Steven Spielberg and Scott Rudin. »

Mastodon Explains How Exactly They Came to Score Jonah Hex

23 October 2009 2:11 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Do you remember the news that heavy metal band Mastodon would be scoring the Jonah Hex movie? Yea, I'm still a bit bewildered by that, but it's being cleared up today, finally. Paste (via SlashFilm) just did an interview with Mastodon recently and got the full story, including that they're not dropping any all-out heavy metal tracks into the movie, but rather recording instrumental songs that will be integrated into the score, similar to how Linkin Park worked with Steve Jablonsky for the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen score. It's actually kind of fascinating to hear and I'm much more excited to hear their score knowing this. The story is that Jonah Hex director Jimmy Hayward called up Mastodon saying he is a huge fan and that it was their album Blood Mountain that inspired him while writing the script. The band came to La following their European tour and »

Mastodon Describes Their 'Jonah Hex' Score

23 October 2009 1:44 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Mastodon's rumored role as composers for the "Jonah Hex" score has since been confirmed, and the band has now opened up with some details about what their tracks will sound like behind Josh Brolin, Megan Fox and John Malkovich. When "Jonah Hex" hits theaters in 2010, it will have an original sound playing behind it that channels both Pink Floyd and Neil Young.

"Some of it was heavy, some of it was very moody," Mastodon bassist Troy Sanders told Paste. "A lot of it was spacey, Melvins B-sides, Pink Floyd-like, surreal outer space, like Neil Young’s 'Dead Man.' Swirling, nausea music."

Made up of instrumentals and variations on themes for each of the main characters, Sanders spoke highly of the synergy he developed with director Jimmy Hayward, who originally called the band as a fan to request their involvement, which they agreed to without a paycheck. Though their recording costs, »

Mastodon Opens Up About the Band’s Score for Jonah Hex

23 October 2009 9:15 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Months ago I ran into Brent Hinds, guitarist for Mastodon, who mentioned that he'd just shot a cameo for the new John Malkovich movie, and that the band would be doing some music for it. That had to be Jonah Hex, but I wasn't able to get any more details. Soon enough AICN got wind of Mastodon's score for the film, but no further info. Now some other enterprising Atlanta boys have talked to the band and got the scoop on what we can expect to hear in the film. And I'm more excited than I expected to be, as the band says that in part, the music resembles Neil Young's score for Dead Man! Paste talked to Troy Sanders, bass player for Mastodon, and he gave up a bunch of details about what the band has done for the movie. Director Jimmy Hayward actually approached the band, saying »

Green Lantern film crews set up new home in New Orleans

21 October 2009 9:34 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Warner Bros has chosen New Orleans as the new location for filming the Green Lantern, according to a report.

An official at New Orleans' newly-constructed Second Line Stages has revealed he has been contacted by producers and says Green Lantern production offices could be set up in town as early as this week.

"The rumours are correct," said Kevin Murphy, the manager of studio operations at the facility. "We are working out the details, and we have a nonrefundable contract to rent stage space to the production."

"It would be: paint dries on one day, they're moving in the next," he told The Times-Picayune. "It's an awesome opportunity."

The revelation follows recent confirmation that production for the superhero movie is moving out of Sydney because of the strengthening Australian dollar adding $20million to the budget, as I reported a few days ago.

Canada and Mexico were among other locations rumoured to be under consideration. »

.Green Lantern. Going to Louisiana?

20 October 2009 9:45 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Probable destinations for the Green Lantern movie are bouncing around as fast as the Emerald ring-wearing heroes themselves: first we hear Mexico, then Canada.

But according to The Times-Picayune, at least part, and maybe all of the production is going to take place in Louisiana. An official at New Orleans’ Second Line Stages told the paper he has been contacted by the film’s producers, and Green Lantern production offices could be set up there as early as next week.

"The rumors are correct," said Kevin Murphy, the manager of studio operations at the Lower Garden District facility, who added production would occupy sound stages in December. Sets would be built that month, with principal photography to begin in March 2010.

"We are working out the details, and we have a nonrefundable contract" to rent stage space, Murphy said. "It would be, paint dries on one day, they're moving in the next. »

Akiva Goldsman, the screenwriter/producer who has brought us such gems as Batman & Robin, Lost in Space, The Da Vinci Code, Hancock and I am Legend, recently spoke to the L.A. Times and dropped a few tidbits of info on the many comic book films he currently has in the pipeline as a producer.

So, if you want some updates on DC Comic films Lobo, Swamp Thing, Jonah Hex and more, keep on reading as I cut down the lengthy interview into some easy-to-absorb snippets for you to feast on.

Check it out:

Starting with Lobo, which is being directed by Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes):

“There’s something hyperbolic and authentic about a Guy Ritchie movie. His best movie are deeply, deeply  stylized yet they are all grounded; there’s a grit of stylization, which sounds like an oxymoron but it makes perfect sense when you’ve seen his films… »

Why 1997's 'Batman & Robin' Might Be 'The Most Important Comic Book Movie Ever Made'

19 October 2009 3:32 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Newsflash: 1997's "Batman & Robin" might be the most important film that the comic book movie genre has ever seen.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger—those words are coming straight from the mouth of Marvel Studios bigwig Kevin Feige.

The La Times recently reviewed the career of Akiva Goldsman, the producer-director-writer with involvement in comic book properties such as "Jonah Hex," "The Losers" and—that's right—"Batman & Robin," the George Clooney-starring film that nearly destroyed the superhero movie genre in the late 1990s.

But Feige, one of the many creative minds behind "Iron Man" and the newly reinvigorated Marvel Studios lineup, said that the current renaissance of comic book movies wouldn't be possible without the widespread critical failure of "Batman & Robin."

"That may be the most important comic-book movie ever made," said Feige. "It was so bad that it demanded a new way of doing things. It created the opportunity »

Goldsman Talks 'Jonah Hex', 'The Losers', 'Lobo'

18 October 2009 9:40 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The name still causes comic book fans to involuntarily clench their fists: Akiva Goldsman.

Yes, that Akiva Goldsman, who wrote the screenplay for the 1997 Batman & Robin, considered by many to be among the worst translations of comics to film ever made. The film was not a financial dud, but the critical beating it took essentially put the Batman film franchise into hibernation for eight years.

More than a decade later, there has yet to be a critical re-evaluation in the movie’s favor, yet here is Goldsman, his career seemingly doing better than ever. In 2002, he took home an Oscar for writing Ron Howard’s A Beautiful Mind; and in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, he talked about his upcoming film projects, which ironically, include no less than three comic book adaptations.

Goldsman wrote the screenplays for the upcoming Jonah Hex, as well as The Losers, which hits theaters next year. »

Akiva Goldsman Talks Comic Book Movies

18 October 2009 2:54 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

It may be unfair to place the blame for the demise of the original Batman franchise at the feet of Akiva Goldsman, but he did write the screenplay for the Joel Schumacher-directed disaster that was Batman & Robin, a fact that does not escape Goldsman.

What got lost in Batman & Robin is the emotions aren't real. The worst thing to do with a serious comic book is to make it a cartoon. I'm still answering for that movie with some people.

Following Batman & Robin, Goldsman's screenwriting career took a hit. However, writing the screenplay for the multiple Academy Award-winning film A Beautiful Mind helped put Goldsman back on the map and he followed it up with a string of high-profile scripts, including The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, I Am Legend, and I, Robot. Despite Batman & Robin, Goldsman has not sworn off superheroes or comic book properties. Goldsman is currently »

In a potential masterstroke for his brand, Giorgio Armani has signed on Megan Fox to be featured in Emporio Armani Underwear and Armani Jeans campaigns, set to hit magazines and billboards in January. The 23-year-old starlet replaces the 35-year-old former Posh Spice (Victoria Beckham), which is the equivalent of trading in a Porsche for a Lamborghini.

In addition to the new Armani gig, Fox is preparing to shoot the third in the Transformers series (set for release in 2011) and next year will appear opposite Josh Brolin and John Malkovich in the comic book flick Jonah Hex, and with Mickey Rourke in the period drama Passion Play.

Jonah Hex has a brother,” revealed Gray. “That’s the idea that came up decades earlier in discussions between writer John Albano and Tony DeZuniga. Tony casually mentioned this to us and that idea has been brought to life in the hardcover. Bold, brazen violent and surprisingly tender, this is the consummate tale of the Wild West’s greatest bounty hunter.”

Earlier this week audiences got their first look at the upcoming remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street courtesy of our friends at Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes studios. Not only would we love to get your thoughts on the trailer, so would Elm Street producer Brad Fuller. Below is part of an entry made on the Platinum Dunes blog over at Bloody Digusting.

A Nightmare on Elm Street is directed by Samuel Bayer with a release on April 30, 2010.

I have to thank many of you. The debut of the teaser was really amazing. Whether you like it or hate it, the release of it was huge. More that 1.6 million people saw it in the first 24 hours. »

Josh Brolin Rolls With a Cartel

Universal Pictures has added the incredibly busy Josh Brolin to the cast of Cartel, in a role that was originally intended to go to Sean Penn before the latter decided to leave the film for a personal retreat from the movie business. Cartel, which begins filming this coming January in Mexico City, will be directed by Asger Leth, who previously directed Ghosts of Cite Soleil, a documentary which explored the gritty underbelly of Haitian gang life.

According to Variety, “Brolin will play a man on a mission to protect his son after his wife is brutally murdered in the gritty world of Mexican drug cartels.” Sounds like the premise of a lot of films in the works right now, but certainly a role that Brolin is mighty capable of handling.

The film is being produced by Brian Grazer, Robert Stone and Webster Stone. Brolin will also be seen in the »
