Who is Jonah Hex?

Jonah Hex is a wild west character that first appeared in DC Comics' All-Star Western comics in 1972, who proved popular enough to have the title renamed Weird Western Tales. The character was later given his own comic series in 1977 and lasted for 92 issues as the last of the great American Wild West comic book series.

In the comics, Jonah is meant to be a subversion of the cliche cleancut noble Western hero as a surly and ruthless old west bounty hunter with massive scarring on his face which hides his heroic code of honor.

Being a Western character in the main DC Comics setting, he has met superheroes from modern times, had a short lived sequel series where he was flung into a post-apocalyptic future where he was a Mad Max like drifter and fought supernatural menaces in mini-series published under DC Comics Vertigo imprint. He current appears in his own series which, no longer restrained by the Comics Code Authority, is grittier than ever before.
