Seventeen is celebrating their best!
17 Is Right Here, out Monday (April 29), is a best album honoring the K-Pop boy band’s legacy in the industry.
Composed of 2 CDs, the album presents 4 new tracks, Korean versions of 8 previously-released Japanese lead singles, 20 lead singles from past Korean releases, and a digital-only instrumental version of the group’s debut single, “Adore U.”
The new lead single “Maestro” weaves in elements from the band’s past 7 releases – “Adore U,” “Very Nice,” “Oh My!”, “Fear,” “Rock with you,” “Cheers,” and “Super” – while innovating a style and concept vastly original to itself, per their label.
“Aligning with the group’s core message around solidarity, this captivating dance R&b track illustrates how together, we can orchestrate our own universe like a ‘maestro.’”
The cinematic music video for “Maestro” is set in “a dark dystopian world where anything, including music and art, can be easily created with technology.

Adam McKay’s name is nowhere to be found in the credits for Painkiller, for the very good reason that he had nothing to do with it.
Yet it’s hard not to see his influence all over the Netflix miniseries. It’s there in the restless pacing, in the heavy-handed metaphors, in the choice to have the entire thing narrated by a character who all but reaches out from the screen to grab the audience by the lapels and shake them into action.
And it’s there, too, in the accompanying limitations. Painkiller, created by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harper, presumably intends for all that flash to draw attention to its weighty central narrative about the launch of OxyContin and the ensuing opioid epidemic. But it overshoots that mark. The style is so ostentatious it distracts from the substance, even as it means to hammer home how important that substance really is.

Audiences often groan at having to sit through yet another superhero origin story, especially one that's already so embedded in pop culture that even people who've never read a comic book in their lives could describe it. The CW's "Smallville," which takes a look at the formative years of Clark Kent before he became Superman, could've fallen into the trap of repeating so many of the same story elements that we're all so familiar with. And yet, the series -- which launched in 2001 and ended in 2011 -- managed to wring a lot of great material out of Clark's early days and, for the most part, maintain its high quality over the course of 10 seasons.
Part of what made "Smallville" work so well was its creators' ability to fuse the teen drama that made the CW so popular with young people during the network's heyday with thrilling superheroics and action set pieces.

A supernatural horror rife with family ambiguity, anger and self-discovery, Sarah Lasry’s Spell on You (La Verrue) sees the Paris-based director take the confusion and rage of her childhood and combine it with the companionship she found in the world of witches and spells. It’s a narrative which empowers her young protagonist who after being initially horrified by the warts on her nose, through them, learns to harness her own unearthly powers. Lasry explores adult themes beyond the grasp of children yet glimpsed through forbidden keyholes and cracks in doors, and unlocks the freedom of self-expression through powers unknown. Spell on You is a creeping dark burgeoning of power where the adults do not rule and an ominous presence is felt right from the seeming normality of the opening scene through to a crescendo of unbalance in its final moments. Ahead of today’s premiere, we sat down...

Hello, dear readers! We’re back with a brand-new batch of home media releases for this week, and there’s definitely something for everyone in Tuesday’s Blu-ray and DVD titles. If you missed it when it was released late last year, you can finally catch up with Spell this week, and for those of you who are looking to add some more classic titles to your personal collections, there’s certainly an array of films headed home this week that surely fit that bill.
Kino Lorber is showing some love to Frank Darabont’s Buried Alive this Tuesday, and Code Red is keeping themselves busy with a pair of cult titles headed to Blu as well: Just Before Dawn and The Devil’s Wedding Night. Other notable releases for January 12th include Rituals, Go/Don’t Go, It Cuts Deep, Devilman: Special Edition, and a Double Feature Blu-ray for both Zombieland films.

Two recent films shared top honors this week on leading VOD charts. Of top significance is the early success of “Let Him Go” (Focus), one of several current releases from Universal and its specialty unit that is available for $19.99 only three weeks after its theatrical debut. “The New Mutants” (Disney), which was released in August and has a lower $5.99 cost placed #1 on two charts.
“Let Him Go,” a contemporary Western starring Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, soared on FandangoNow and Apple TV, two charts that provide the most immediate response. The former ranks by dollars paid; the latter lists by number of transactions. Placing ahead of films with much lower prices suggests very strong interest and hints that the Universal/Focus strategy could be working. The film also placed #6 at Google Play. With an earlier deadline, Spectrum usually lags behind the others; expect it to show up next week.

The erratic world of VOD consumption saw a lift this week with debuts of “The New Mutants” (Disney) and “Unhinged” (Solstice), films that were the first wide releases when theaters began to reopen in August. Ninety days later, normal windows dictate that it’s time for non-premium availability. (They each rent for $5.99.)
Disney’s Marvel spin-off took the top spot at Apple TV and FandangoNow, while Russell Crowe’s stalker thriller is #1 at Google Play. Two items of note: “Mutants” shows its strength by taking the top spot at Fandango, which ranks by revenue, not transactions; that’s impressive for a standard-price title. Unlike “Mutants,” “Unhinged” had a PVOD release and now sees a revival at its lower price.
These two titles were the only ones to place on three charts. (Spectrum’s weekly chart lags behind and will likely show them next week.) “Unhinged” placed #2 and #3 elsewhere, while “Mutants” was #5 on Google.

On Monday, Universal Pictures gave theater owners another shove toward the future of moviegoing. The Hollywood studio struck a second deal with a major theater chain, this time Cinemark, to shorten the theatrical window and bring movies more quickly to the home.
Under the terms of the agreement, Universal can put new movies on premium video-on-demand platforms in as little as 17 days. Films that generate at least $50 million in opening weekend ticket sales, however, will have to play exclusively in theaters for 31 days, or five full weekends. Traditionally, new releases remain on the big screen for 75 to 90 days before they move to digital platforms for a $19.99 rental fee.
Universal made a similar agreement months ago with the world’s biggest cinema chain, AMC Theatres — a decision that initially drew criticism. Yet having Cinemark on board now means that two of the biggest movie theater chains in the country have resigned...

Four VOD titles reached #1 in a week with scattershot results across the board. “Mortal” (Saban), a contemporary action film with Nordic mythology roots, took first place at Apple TV. Meanwhile, the PVOD prison drama “The Informer” (Vertical) repeated at #1 at FandangoNow, Paramount’s horror entry “Spell” is first at Spectrum, and romance “After We Collided” from Briarcliff bested at Google Play. “Mortal” is a standard price entry, while “The Informer” is at $19.99 premium, with “Spell” at $9.99 finding a middle ground.
But the highest showing for a new release is #2 at Apple TV for Woody Allen’s “A Rainy Day in New York” (MPI). Its VOD showing comes three weeks after a token theatrical run, more than a year after it opened in most of the world, and after his latest, “Rifkin’s Festival,” premiered overseas.

Every year, movie-preview pieces herald the holidays’ arrival; in 2020, the headlines are a little different. As USA Today proclaimed, “10 Must-See Movies to Stream Over the Holiday Season.” They include “Soul,” “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Let Them All Talk,” and “Small Axe” — major awards contenders, many of which would have have been theatrical releases. However, they all belong to streamers, not VOD.
Meanwhile, on Friday Vertical Entertainment dropped an action film, “The Informer,” which stars Joel Kinnaman as an ex-con who returns to prison undercover to expose a Polish drug cartel. Shot in 2017 and released in most of the world in 2019, this title from the director of “Escobar: Paradise Lost” is unlikely to show up on anyone’s awards-season list. However, even at $19.99 to rent, it topped two major VOD charts this weekend.

“Let Him Go,” a modern-day western with Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, gave Universal’s boutique unit Focus its second straight #1 for the weekend, after “Come Play” on Halloween weekend. That horror title took second place, giving Focus both top spots.
Universal overall may hold #1 for the foreseeable future. With the parent company releasing “Freaky” and “Croods: New Age” the next two weekends. This studio has been the most aggressive in pushing an early Premium VOD modeL and sold all four of these titles to theaters witht he understanding that they will be available within a month for home viewing.
That’s what happens when no other studio drops a wide release film in any week. If theaters have any chance of staying open, they can’t rely on library product. Acquiescence abounds as a new model settles in.

Despite the plethora of horror and other genre releases that glutted home platforms this week, romance “After We Collided” placed best on VOD charts this weekend. It ranked #1 at both Apple TV and Google Play, both of which rank by transactions.
“Unhinged” is #1 at FandangoNow, which is based on revenue and gives an edge to Premium VOD titles like this $19.99 entry. Cable giant Spectrum still shows the Alec Baldwin-starring mystery “An Imperfect Murder,” which has little action elsewhere, atop its chart.
Surging late on the charts, “The Craft: Legacy” from Blumhouse Prods. and indie director Zoe Lister-Jones performed strongly at $19.99. It likely missed the top spot at FandangoNow because its full-week chart covered four days prior to its Friday release, but still took the #2 spot there. It is #3 at Apple TV and Google Play, despite its higher cost.

There was no shortage of frights over the Halloween weekend as a pair of new big-screen chillers managed to break into the Top 10 in another eerily quiet weekend at the domestic box office.
The more successful of the two newcomers (by far) was Focus Features’ Come Play, which debuted at No. 1 with $3.2 million. The PG-13-rated indie about a monster that manifests itself through smart phones and other mobile devices opened in 2,183 theaters and managed to scare up a $1,442 per-screen average. It has yet to open internationally.
Although hardly a blockbuster bow even with the lowered expectations of the coronavirus era, the film which stars Gillian Jacobs and John Gallagher Jr. came out of the gate strong enough to unseat Liam Neeson’s Honest Thief from its two-week reign as the No. 1 movie in North America.
Knocked from its perch to the runner-up spot, Honest Thief stumbled 42.7%, pulling in $1.4 million in its fourth week.

Focus Features’ low-budget horror film “Come Play” easily placed #1 this weekend. Produced by Amblin Partners, the tech-based genre film (evil forces use tech and social media to traumatize an autistic boy) more than doubled the gross of any other film. It grossed a little over $3 million, which comes to less than $1,500 at each of its 2,183 theaters.
The real news stems from where it played. Though the total theater count was below that of two holdovers, nearly all exhibitors showed it. That’s a big deal because the current plan is to release “Come Play” on Premium VOD November 20. That’s a three-week theatrical window, and almost no one blinked.
Focus is a division of Universal, which negotiated a 17-day PVOD window with AMC earlier this year. However, this is the first time that other top chains, led by #3 Cinemark, are playing a first-run film knowing that it’s heading to...
