With the appetite of a hungry grizzly, “The Bear” could gobble up a few Emmy records for its sophomore season. Fresh off a smashing first season that set a new benchmark for comedy series wins with 10 trophies, FX’s awards-gobbling show shows no signs of letting up. Its second season, which aired in June 2023, is eyeing three more records to own: most acting nominations for a series in a single year, most nods for a comedy, and most nominated episode in history with its sixth installment, “Fishes.”
“Fishes” dishes out a heated Christmas dinner flashback of the Berzatto family, positioning itself as the series’ pièce de résistance thus far — imagine the “Succession/Connor’s Wedding” version of family dinners, only with more food spills. Directed by Christopher Storer, who also co-wrote the episode with Joanna Calo, “Fishes” seems the obvious pick for Emmy nods in both directing and writing categories.

Ramy Youssef recently opened up about his experience directing the “Honeydew” episode of The Bear season two, which saw Lionel Boyce’s Marcus journey to Copenhagen to create three items for The Bear’s dessert menu.
The Poor Things star stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! and explained that while helming the episode, he and Boyce were able to spend a day working at Noma, which was voted the best restaurant in the world every year from 2010-12 and then again in 2014.
“They let me and Lionel work there for a day, which we’ve never [done],” Youssef told Jimmy Kimmel. “We got to work from the beginning of the day, all the way through dinner service. We got to prep. We got to serve people food and make plates.”
He continued, “It’s really kind of sad actually because it’s a table that some people wait a year for, and...

To date, only three programs throughout television history have swept the top seven Primetime Emmys categories for series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, writing and directing. The lucky three are: miniseries “Angels in America” (2004), comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” (2020) and drama series “The Crown” (2021). At the upcoming 2024 Emmys, “The Bear” is hoping to join this esteemed list — and it’s all thanks to a savvy category switcheroo from one of its fan-fave stars.
Recently the FX dramedy about a Chicago beef restaurant claimed six of the top seven Primetime Emmys for its first season: comedy series, lead actor Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, supporting actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach as restaurant manager Richard “Richie” Jerimovich, supporting actress Ayo Edebiri as sous-chef Sydney Adamu, and both writing and directing for Christopher Storer. “The Bear” was not eligible in the lead actress category, so it couldn’t win there and complete the sweep.

These kudos honored the best helmers of the year in movies and television, as voted on by more than 18,000 members of the directing guild. Scroll down for the 2024 DGA Awards winners list in three film and eight TV categories.
As always, the all-important feature film category is one of the most telling bellwethers for the eventual Best Director Oscar. The guild and the academy have only disagreed for Best Director eight times over the past seven decades, with the last three years lining up perfectly for Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Jane Campion (2021’s “The Power of the Dog”) and Chloé Zhao (2020’s “Nomadland”).

As we enter the heart of Hollywood awards season, there are signs everywhere of both how far the entertainment industry has come in telling the whole American story — and just how far it has left to go.
Last month, events during the Sundance Film Festival reflected on the fractious times we are living in.
There was a conversation with Jewish hostages on their harrowing experiences and a public protest against the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, which has resulted in tens of thousands of civilian deaths.
There were also hundreds of Muslim creators and their allies who gathered one evening at the festival’s Muslim House. The standing-room-only event confirmed both the vitality of Muslim creators — writers, directors, producers, artists — and the immense challenges they continue to face in breaking through.
The statistics confirm their experiences. A 2022 study from the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism found that,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Season 2 of “The Bear,” now streaming on Hulu.
Though production on Season 2 of “The Bear” was well underway before Ramy Youssef traveled to Copenhagen to direct the fourth episode, series creator Chris Storer was slow to bring him fully behind the curtain.
“He didn’t let me watch anything they had shot [in the first three episodes]. He was like, ‘No, no. You can see it when you come back, but just make this what you think it should be,'” Youssef remembers.
Youssef is the first and only person to serve as a director on “The Bear” besides Storer and his co-showrunner Joanna Calo. When a tight production timeline made it impossible for Storer or Calo to direct in Copenhagen on top of nine Chicago-set episodes, Youssef was Storer’s first choice. Season 2 of “The Bear” included a plethora of incredible guest stars. That began in episode 4, “Honeydew,” with Will Poulter starring as Luca, a top Copenhagen chef who trains Marcus (Lionel Boyce) in the kitchen as the pair create a trusting friendship.
Poulter felt a connection to the FX series early on, as he’d been dreaming about making a show about chefs.
“I called them. I literally begged to be in the show. I asked if I could meet with Chris Storer and basically communicated that I was such a fan of so much of his work, but especially ‘The Bear,'” Poulter tells Variety. “He was kind enough to gift me with the offer to play Luca and it really changed my life, to be honest. The second season of The Bear had some fantastic cameos that left the viewers surprised, delighted, and shocked by their presence. They slip into the narrative, and right from their first scene, they are a part of this world. These characters who play the cameos are related to Carmy personally and professionally, which makes them an important part of the narrative. They were, in a way, a catalyst that started the chain of events leading up to the opening night of The Bear.

It is a delight to let the fans of this show know that The Bear Season 2 has managed to exceed expectations when it comes to presenting a powerful season. Many good shows in any genre end up losing steam by the time the follow -up season is out, mainly due to the pressure. Keeping this in mind, The Bear has delivered, and how. [This story contains spoilers from season two, episode four of The Bear, “Honeydew.”]
In season two of The Bear, Lionel Boyce’s Marcus goes on a journey.
It’s both external and internal, as bottle episode “Honeydew” sees Marcus reluctantly leave his ailing, nonverbal mother and travel beyond the borders of Chicago for the first time to stage in Copenhagen under a chef named Luca (Will Poulter). He’s there to create three dishes for The Bear’s dessert menu. But the experience — like those of his fellow staff at The Beef — delivers on more than just a meal.
Marcus’ intense experiences in and out of the kitchen “ignite” the rest of his season two journey, Boyce tells The Hollywood Reporter, and help him to understand arguably his biggest lesson so far: That “you make with heart, not with skill.” It’s an emotional episode, directed by Ramy Youssef, that underscores The Bear’s return not as the fast-paced, anxiety-inducing...

The series, created by Dunham, who also starred in, executive-produced, wrote, and directed the show, first debuted at SXSW before its TV premiere and eventual five Emmy Award nominations that year. Jenni Konner served as co-showrunner and producer while Judd Apatow also executive produced.
“Girls” stars Dunham as 20-something struggling writer Hannah Horvath, who has one foot in adolescence thanks to an allowance from her parents. After she’s informed she’s been financially cut off two years after graduating from a liberal arts college, Hannah embarks on navigating New York City by experiencing one mistake at a time.
Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Allison Williams play Hannah’s eccentric and at times codependent circle of friends.

Jordanian director Rama Ayasra’s “Harvest Moon,” a documentary that tells the story of two activists on a mission to bring back the cultivation of wheat and its lost heritage to its original homeland of Jordan, took the top prize in the Pitching Forum of the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival’s Agora Docs industry program, which wrapped March 16.
The award ceremony Wednesday night brought a close to a successful session that saw more than 300 industry professionals taking part both physically and online. “I think it’s the best proof that the industry is ready to be back in business – if it ever stopped,” said the festival’s general director, Elise Jalladeau.
In its selection of “Harvest Moon” (pictured), which is produced by Mariam Salim (New Productions) and co-produced by Asmahan Bkerat, the jury offered its hope that the award “can help the seeds of an idea grow into a beautiful and important documentary.

In his latest interview/podcast, host and screenwriter Stuart Wright talks to John Mehrmann about how he made the skin crawling, atonal at time, film score for Devereux Milburn’s directorial feature debut and a brilliant piece of genre cinema that is Honeydew.
For Sam and Rylie an idyllic camping trip becomes an out of control nightmare. Seeking shelter on a local farm overnight when their car encounters trouble on the road, the couple find themselves at the mercy of an ageing farmer and her peculiar son. The kindness of strangers is always welcome but soon that kindness descends into hallucinogenic fuelled madness as their host begins to show her true colours… when the crops fail and the land is barren there’s only one thing left to eat and that’s a juicy lawn pig.
The Honeydew score is available to stream or buy now on Amazon and Apple Music.

Actor Sawyer Spielberg has opened up on how his father Steven Spielberg's directing skills helped him get up for school.
"When I was a teenager, I had a hard time getting up for school and one morning he came in and he said, 'Okay, I'm a director, you're an actor, I'm going to barge into your room and I'm going to say action. And you have to get up, brush your teeth and head down for breakfast'. Sure enough, he came in, he said, 'Action', and I got up, brushed my teeth and came down for breakfast and it worked!" Sawyer told host Drew Barrymore on the "The Drew Barrymore Show".
"So, his directing skills have worked in both the cinema and at home," added the actor on Barrymore's chat show that airs on Zee Cafe in India.

When Life Gives You Melons: Millburn Sows Agricultural Horror in Creepy Debut
We are what we eat, alas. And we’ve come to reap the tainted rewards of the poisoned earth. Such is a pronounced theme in Honeydew, the low-key but overtly grotesque debut from Devereaux Millburn. A goofy freakshow a la David Lynch meets We Are What We Are, the film’s strident sense of tone and fated misfortune for its two privileged protagonists stumbles over the chopping block of an over-the-top finale.

For this writer, it’s been fascinating to watch the evolution of Dark Star Pictures over the last few years, as they’ve become one of the most interesting distributors working in the genre space today, showcasing films like Jumbo, Pvt Chat, Dementer, Attack of the Demons, Koko-Di Koko-Da, and Climate of the Hunter, as well their most recent release, Honeydew, which makes its digital debut this week.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Dark Star’s Creative Director, Josh Goldbloom, and we discussed his background in the film festival scene and how that led to him joining Dark Star Pictures’ founder Michael Repsch in the indie horror trenches to help provide filmmakers with the opportunity to get their films out there for fans to enjoy. Tomorrow, Devereux Milburn’s feature film debut, Honeydew, is set to infect VOD and Digital platforms with its twisted tale of rural horror, courtesy of Dark Star Pictures and Bloody Disgusting. It’s comforting to see the words “bizarre” and “absurd” in the press notes and director’s statement for Devereux Milburn’s Honeydew because they prove that he understands what he’s created. When a film exudes such a self-serious tone despite possessing so many odd idiosyncrasies and wild leaps of narrative coincidence, it’s easy to think you’re laughing at the whole rather than with it. Reading those words therefore allows us to know that the artist was fully aware of that incongruous juxtaposition. It might have even been his intent as a way to mirror the similarly opposed forces of the leads he’s trapped within. Rylie (Malin Barr) is pragmatic and cautious. Sam (Sawyer Spielberg) is impulsive and reckless. Their on-screen frustration therefore matches our own as mounting clichés combat intrigue.
While the former ultimately far outweighs the latter, that’s not the case at the start.

Another week, another step toward the world as we knew it before Covid-19, thanks to nationwide vaccination efforts and the gradual reopening of theaters. A week after New York cinemas cautiously reopened, Los Angeles plans to do the same, and distributors are serving up movies they’d kept on the sidelines to serve the venues that have suffered so greatly this past year — although after last week’s deluge, this one brings a pretty meager menu of new releases.
Perhaps most tantalizing is Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Human Voice,” starring Tilda Swinton. Sony Pictures Classics is releasing the 30-minute short film, which debuted at the Venice Film Festival (one of 2020’s few in-person events), in just a handful of theaters, along with a fresh restoration of the Spanish master’s “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.” That means audiences can come just for a short, social-distanced experience (ducking...

Those who expected more outright terror from a young couple’s sojourn in a middle-of-nowhere farmhouse from hell in “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” may find something to love about Devereux Milburn’s first feature “Honeydew.” Adrift in the twilight zone between the “Hansel and Gretel” fairytale and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” this gross-out, slow-dripping, arthouse horror siphons dread out of deadpan places. “Honeydew” sure , unsure of what it wants to say even when it’s saying whatever that is loudly.
That could be attributed to Milburn’s background as a music video and short film director, because “Honeydew” feels like a germ of an idea distended to feature length. Steven Spielberg’s son Sawyer Spielberg makes his feature acting debut as Sam, one half of a desultory couple opposite Malin Barr as Rylie. With Covid restrictions making it a bit difficult to mount massive productions––as even Tom Cruise has learned––Steven Spielberg’s next project looks to be a more small-scale offering than his usual output.
THR reports that he’ll direct a loosely autobiographical film that he’s co-written with collaborator Tony Kushner. Set in Arizona, where Spielberg grew up in the 50s and 60s, the film will follow a boy and his relationship with his parents, one of whom will be played by Michelle Williams. The structure will include the Spielberg surrogate (though his name won’t be Steven) both as a young child and as a teenager, with screen testing already underway ahead of a July production start.
Casting is also underway for another child lead role, part of a dozen or so featured child parts. As one is surely familiar with, Spielberg was an avid amateur filmmaker at a young,...

Vertical Entertainment US has launched a new trailer for the feature ‘Body Brokers’ featuring Frank Grillo.
Utah and Opal are junkies living on the streets of rural Ohio until a seemingly chance encounter with the enigmatic Wood (Michael Kenneth Williams) brings them to Los Angeles for treatment. While Utah finds sobriety with the help of the treatment centre shrink (Academy Award®-Winner Melissa Leo), he soon learns that rehab is not about helping people—it’s merely a cover scheme for a multibillion-dollar fraud operation, enlisting addicts to recruit other addicts. Seduced by the money, but troubled by the hypocrisy, Utah must decide between what will make him rich, and what will save Opal.
Written and directed by John Swab, the film stars Jack Kilmer, Michael K. Williams, Jessica Rothe, Alice Englert, Peter Greene, Owen Campbell, Sam Quartin, Thomas Dekker, with Frank Grillo and Melissa Leo.

Los Angeles-based Dark Star Pictures has acquired the North American distribution rights to the festival midnighter Dementia Part II as part of their exciting collaboration with horror leader Bloody Disgusting, the companies announced Monday morning.
Taken from the pages of Sam Raimi, and delivering absurd gross-out humor and nonstop mayhem, the making of Dementia Part II came out of a dare from Chicago’s Cinepocalype Film Festival and the movie’s producers Jd Lifshitz and Raphael Margules. The two must produce a feature-length midnight movie from concept to finished product in one month so that it could make its World Premiere on the last night of the film festival. The film turned out to be Dementia Part II, a tongue-in-cheek sequel to Mike Testin’s 2015 original film.
