In My Opinion: Top Ten Biggest Disappointments of 2009

8 hours ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Ten films that didn't live up to expectations Ten Most Disappointing Films of 2009

This year I've decided I'm not going to write a "Worst of 2009" list. What's the point? If you must you can visit the review archives for 2009, sort by grade and find my reviews of Fanboys, The Last House on the Left, All About Steve and I Love You Beth Cooper and then fill in six of your choosing from the "D" section and be done with it. Instead, I'm going back to what I've done only one other time and going to take a look back at the films that ended up disappointing me on one lever or another.

This way I don't have to talk about The Marc Pease Experience or Bride Wars. Year One and Whiteout don't need further dicussion and neither does G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra of Fighting. Instead I can …

Dan O'Bannon Memories, A 'Fire' Actor, And Idw's Holiday Party In Today's Twitter Report

18 December 2009 12:14 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

"Alien" screenwriter Dan O'Bannon's death was the trending topic of the Twitter Report feed this morning. The writer, who also penned "The Return of the Living Dead," made his way into memorial tweets from Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, Dave McKean and many others who took O'Bannon's contributions to sci-fi, horror and film to heart.

Elsewhere in the overlap between comics and film, Brian Michael Bendis tweeted some optimism about the film adaptation of his graphic novel "Fire," which now has a mystery actor attached. Warren Ellis accused him quickly thereafter of having had his Twitter account hacked by Mark Millar.

It's all there, along with Chris Ryall's thoughts on the Idw holiday party, Jock's gift from DC and some wisdom from Popeye the Sailor Man in the Twitter Report for December 18, 2009.

Top Ten Tuesday: Worst Movies of 2009

15 December 2009 1:00 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Another year has come and nearly gone, which means it’s once again that time of year to reflect on the cornucopia of movies released in theaters over the last 12 months. While we’re all eager to find out what movies rank amongst the best of 2009, the Movie Geeks prefer to start with the bad news and finish with the good news. So, this week we pull all the stops and lay out the Bottom Ten Worst Movies of 2009.

10. Whiteout

There’s pretty much only one thing this thriller (in name only) has plenty of.  White.  It’s not exciting.  It’s not suspenseful.  It doesn’t make you care one iota whether anyone lives or dies.  It’s really one of those movies that, at the end of the day, is just a waste of space, time, and money.  When your “thriller” gets its culminating action scenes and suspense …

'Modern Warfare 2,' Brad Meltzer On Glenn Beck, And Paul Pope Plays Luke Cage In Today's Twitter Report

15 December 2009 12:29 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The last 24 hours were lively on the Twitter Report follow list with Brian Michael Bendis' excitement over new "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" boxer shorts and Paul Pope doing an impression of Luke Cage on Christmas Day. Brad Meltzer, meanwhile, taped in front of a lively studio audience last night, according to his tweets, which state that he appeared on Glenn Beck's show to discuss heroes.

Transportation accidents somehow trended as well, with Brandon Jerwa having a near-death experience, B. Clay Moore recalling a past brush with the reaper during Comic-Con, and Aaron Diaz discussing the origin of his own scar in Harry Potter terms. Check those out along with a sad photo from Terry Moore and a Jock's latest project with Andy Diggle.

It's all retweeted in the Twitter Report for December 15, 2009.

Sigourney Weaver Drops Some Major Ghostbusters 3 Story Details

11 December 2009 3:26 PM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

Channel 4 posted an interview with Weaver, who not only said she might appear in Ghostbusters 3, but let some story details slip as well. Be warned, these could be Big spoilers, so if you don’t want to know, stop here.

“I’m afraid to say it Ghostbusters 3 is happening, I hope people are excited about that. I don’t know if I’m going to be in it, I have had a couple of calls asking ‘would you read the script’. I know that my little son Oscar – who was kidnapped from me – I think he has grown up to be a Ghostbuster. I might be in it; I see nothing wrong with being in it, although I don’t think I will have a big part. I think Bill Murray has a little more to do with it – he’s a ghost.”

Oh yeah you read it, Bill Murray

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (December 11, 2009)

11 December 2009 4:42 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

And What A Very Gay Week It Was!

Man, this week it just seemed like one fricking thing after another. If New Jersey legislators weren't getting cold feet about gay marriage, then Details was peddling incredibly stupid and homophobic humor while Uganda was debating executing gays and As the World Turns was getting canceled and GLAAD was flailing all over the place like a spastic octopus. Well, I guess the only thing to do is make fun of it all. Or die trying!

How do you solve a problem like Buju Banton? Many in the Glbt community were less than delighted when a Grammy nomination went to uber-homophobe reggae artist Buju Banton. GLAAD started an online petition urging the academy to reject Buju for a Grammy while others are urging a boycott of Grammy sponsors. (And others still are asking if GLAAD knows what GLAAD is doing.)

I, on the other hand, …

Cameron Diaz goes raunchy for 'Bad Teacher'

10 December 2009 11:29 PM, PST | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Cameron Diaz is set to star in Columbia Pictures' upcoming raunchy comedy "Bad Teacher," which Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky ("The Office," "Year One") wrote. Jake Kasdan ("The TV Set") is directing.

Variety says Diaz will play the leading lady, a foulmouthed middle school teacher who gets dumped by her boyfriend and launches into a battle with a colleague for the affections of the school's top teacher.

Kasdan also directed "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story." Eisenberg and Stupnitsky are also penning the script for "Ghostbusters III." Diaz was last seen in "The Box," and she has "The Green Hornet" coming up. …

Cameron Diaz Returns To Raunch As A 'Bad Teacher'

10 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Cameron Diaz can do sweet romantic comedies like "The Holiday" and tearjerker dramas like "My Sister's Keeper" and even the occasional period piece like "Gangs of New York," but her true calling has always been raunchy comedy. Now, to add to her gross-out work in "There's Something About Mary" and "The Sweetest Thing," the actress will star in Columbia Pictures' "Bad Teacher," according to Variety.

Jake Kasdan, who last gave us "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story," is directing the comedy, about a "foulmouthed, gold-digging middle-school teacher," who battles with another faculty member for dibs on a hot co-worker. The idea of a fought-over "model teacher" makes me imagine "Glee" star Matthew Morrison as the male lead, but that will never happen.

What makes "Bad Teacher" sound more appealing than, say, "What Happens in Vegas?" is that the script was written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, of TV's …

Cameron Diaz Is a Naughty Teacher

10 December 2009 1:44 PM, PST | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Remember how funny it was to watch Billy Bob Thornton play a nasty, foul-mouthed Santa in the film Bad Santa? Well, apply that same sort of concept to a middle-school teacher, then throw Cameron Diaz in the role. Variety tells us that Diaz will play a foul-mouthed gold digger in who, after being dumped by her boyfriend, competes against a rival colleague for the affections of the school's model teacher.   The raunchy comedy, which is actually called Bad Teacher, was written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, who, apart from writing for The Office and penning the comedy Year One, are the duo assigned to bring back the Ghostbusters for a third installment. And honestly, while a lot of people will probably knock this casting choice, I'm of the opinion that Cameron Diaz is a wayyy...

Cameron Diaz Is Going To Be A 'Bad Teacher'

10 December 2009 6:54 AM, PST | AMC - Script to Screen | See recent AMC - Script to Screen news »

Having done two major dramatic roles this year alone ("The Box" and "My Sister's Keeper") it looks like Cameron Diaz  is going to return to comedy again in the project "Bad Teacher".

Diaz will play the naughty educator in the film that is described as:

"a foul-mouthed seventh grade teacher who is dumped by her sugar daddy and starts to pursue a colleague, which provokes conflict with the school’s model teacher."

The film will be directed by Jake Kasdan ("Walk Hard", "Orange County") with the script written by "The Office" tandem Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, who also wrote this year's "Year One".

Cameron Diaz is a 'Bad Teacher'

10 December 2009 6:03 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When we first learned that The Office scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky had sold a spec called Bad Teacher, there was -- of course -- chatter about who that teacher should be. Anna Faris, Tina Fey, Elizabeth Banks, Winona Ryder, and Angelina Jolie were names batted around, but they're nothing like the reality.

I'm sorry to report that according to Variety, Cameron Diaz will be the lucky lady Bad Teacher for Columbia Pictures. The film focuses on a foulmouthed gold digger middle-school teacher. When she's dumped by her sugar daddy boyfriend, she turns her romantic attentions to her colleague, but has to battle the school's model teacher -- her rival -- for the honor. (Variety now says she battles a colleague for the affections of the model teacher, but that might be a mix-up.)

Jake Kasdan is helming the comedy, which isn't too bad, but it's not hard to …

Top 10 Comedy Movies of 2009

8 December 2009 4:52 AM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

Dramas aren't drawing audiences (unless they're dramas loaded with action), but comedies continue to do well at the box office. That said, there were a lot of disappointing laffers released in 2009 (Year One, Land of the Lost, Observe and Report, etc). Thankfully, there were enough decent comedies to make up for the ones that just didn't work. Here are my picks for the funniest movies of 2009. Remember, these are my personal favorites - feel free to disagree.

Jack Black to Produce New Cryptozoology Animated Film

6 December 2009 11:22 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

I'm beginning to think of Jack Black more as a cartoon character than an actual live person. I blame Kung Fu Panda, Ice Age, and that I keep mistakenly thinking he's been in one of the Shrek films at some point. Coupled with the fact that I've forced myself to forget the comedic failure Year One, Black could very well be made of bits and bytes for all I know. Now he's involved in another animated project, although this time as just a producer. Black has teamed up with writer Jason Micallef (he of the Black List script Butter) to pitch an animated feature centered on Cryptozoology---the search for legendary creatures like Big Foot, chupacabras, and the Loch Ness monster. There's no word yet if it's going to be 2D or CG animation, but given that even Disney couldn't be bothered to put out a decent 2D film in theaters …
