Screenplay, Britain's most northerly film festival, is a world away from the glitz and hype of Cannes
A couple of years ago, as I was dragging my sorry bones around another overcrowded, overheated, overhyped film festival in the broiling south of France, somebody asked me "How come you always look so miserable in Cannes?" I thought about this for a while before answering, "All things considered, I'd rather be in Shetland."
This was no idle threat. For the past four years, my partner Linda Ruth Williams and I have been proudly co-curating Shetland Arts' annual ScreenPlay festival, a celebration of everything we love about cinema that's about as far away from the exclusive ghastliness of the Croisette as it's possible to get in terms of both climate and culture. Last year we held a screening in a bus shelter in Unst, the most northerly in the UK (if you don't get off here,...

London -- Ken Loach's "Looking For Eric," which unspooled In Competition this month at the Festival de Cannes, has scored £125,000 ($200,000) from the U.K. Film Council's prints and advertising cashpool.
The cash goes to U.K. indie distributor Icon Film Distribution to widen the movie's release here, pushing it from 100 to 200 screens. It also will see Icon plugging the film during Wednesday evening's Champion's league cup final between Manchester United and Barcelona. The movie opens June 12.
The Council also said that Stephen Frears' "Cheri" will walk off with £150,000 ($240,000) from the fund, with Pathe Prods. widening the movie's May 8 release from 40 to 80 screens.
Metrodome Distribution, listed here on the stock exchange, grabbed an initial £100,000 ($160,000) for Fred Cavaye's "Anything for Her," a French thriller. The P&A funding will increase the size of the film's June 5 release from 30 to 40 sites and go toward publicity and media costs.

Familiar as Ireland may be with the Eurovision Song Contest, a new comedy documentary 'Sounds Like Teen Spirit' to be released this week explores the little known subject of the Junior Eurovision. Iftn meets with the film makers; producer Stephen Woolley (producer of features including 'The Crying Game' and 'Michael Collins') and director Jamie J Johnson. UK producer Stephen Woolley has a long affiliation with Irish production, producing many of Neil Jordan's films including 'The Crying Game', 'Michael Collins', 'Breakfast on Pluto' and 'The Butcher Boy'; in addition to other successful Irish features such as 'Intermission', 'The Actors' and Ian Fitzgibbon's upcoming 'Perrier's Bounty'. Woolley's most recent project has been in the realm of documentary filmmaking - 'Sounds Like Teen Spirit', directed by Jamie J Johnson. This light...

Sounds Like Teen Spirit is one of those documentaries that comes along every now and again and charms everyone's socks off. This time the focus is on the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, and four contestants who set off to it with high hopes and, in some cases, even higher hair. And here's an exclusive clip from the film. This glimpse focuses on one of our featured contestants, 13 year-old Mariam from Georgia. After winning the national heats of her wartorn, impoverished country, Mariam becomes a minor celebrity, but she still lives in a small apartment with her family, who cannot all afford to accompany her to the show.If you haven't heard of Junior Eurovision, by the way, that's because the UK doesn't enter it. But it's massive around the rest of the continent, honest.Directed by up-and-coming Brit director Jamie Jay Johnson, the film's out on Friday May 8 and the...

“Sounds Like Teen Spirit,” Jamie Jay Johnson’s energetic documentary about the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, is a crowd-pleaser in the best possible way. While the film might seem like a no-brainer (cute kids + compelling stories + kitschy costumes = crossover doc hit), it manages to trace a precise, well-considered path, never detouring into JonBenet territory. At a post-screening Q & A on the opening night of the True/False Film Festival, Johnson explained his technique: “I followed the kids I liked.” And it’s that simple. This isn’t to say the film lacks depth—far from it. Each of the young (ages 10-15), talented protagonists has his or her own trial: Marina from Bulgaria tries to make sense of her father’s absence (while singing in...
