Q&A - Sam Rockwell Describes His Incestuous Relationship With the Cast of Everybody's Fine

1 December 2009 9:00 PM, PST | amctv.com - Exclusive Interviews | See recent amctv.com - Exclusive Interviews news »

Thanks to movies like Moon, Choke and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, actor Sam Rockwell has become famous for his intense -- and idiosyncratic -- roles. With the family drama Everybody's Fine, he takes on something lighter, playing one of four grown children Robert De Niro is seeking to reconnect with. Rockwell talks to AMCtv.com about re-teaming with Drew Barrymore and Kate Beckinsale, and when he's willing to play »

Fight Club Pummels Its Way to Bluray

1 September 2009 6:22 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Like it was for many males of my generation, Fight Club was a formative film of my youth. It was brutal, hip, mean and fun — everything that a young teenager aspires to be!

Unlike many other males of my generation, I understood it was satirical and sarcastic, and that fight clubs were indeed not cool to start up in loving tribute of the film.

However, revisiting the film brings back warm memories of one of my first ventures into innovative, stylized filmmaking, and it’s surely one of David Fincher’s best works.

To date, it’s also the only completely successful film adaptation of a Chuck Palanuik novel.

Now, the beautifully gritty film will finally be arriving on Bluray on November 23rd, 2009. From the official press release for the disc:

“Quit your job. Start a fight. Prove you’re alive. If you don’t claim your humanity you will become a statistic. »

Moon | Review

10 July 2009 8:37 AM, PDT | SmellsLikeScreenSpirit | See recent SmellsLikeScreenSpirit news »

Director: Duncan Jones Writer(s): Duncan Jones, Nathan Parker Starring: Sam Rockwell, Kevin Spacey (voice), Dominique McElligott, Kaya Scodelario Set in the near future, Moon is the story of corporate Astronaut Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) who is living on the far side of Earth's moon. Sam is there completing a three-year work contract for Lunar Industries overseeing automated mining operations for Helium-3, Earth’s primary source of clean energy. The job is a solo mission with no other people stationed with him, all made harder by a broken satellite preventing any kind of real time live communications with Earth. Sent and received recorded messages are his only means of communication with home. The only conversation Sam has during his time on the moon is with "Gerty", the base's track tethered, talking computer that responds to the needs of Sam and his well-being with smiley-face expressions displayed on his screen. »

'Moon'

14 June 2009 10:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

There is the science fiction of 'Terminator' and 'Transformers', and then there is the science fiction of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris. While the first are consumed by technology and effects, the second rely more on ideas to drive the film forward. Duncan Jones' first feature, Moon, lies squarely in the second category, with its character-driven narrative and impressive performance by Sam Rockwell.

Set in the near future, Moon exists in a time where most of Earth gets its power from Helium-3, a powerful compound that is mined on the far side of the moon. Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is nearing the end of his three-year contract with Lunar Industries, the company behind the mining, after which, he can return home to live with his wife and daughter.

The three years in almost complete isolation at the Sarang station have not been kind to Sam; with only a »

Sam Rockwell Talks Moon and Iron Man 2

13 June 2009 3:57 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Sam Rockwell is an actor known for taking interesting and challenging roles, such as game show host Chuck Barris in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind or the sex-addicted Victor in Choke, which likely prepared him to take on two difficult roles, that of astronaut Sam Bell in Moon, a movie that revolves entirely around Rockwell's solo performance, and rich industrialist Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2, a role Rockwell accepted "on faith" when the script arrived only one week prior to shooting.

With both movies, Rockwell is having a great time, in part due to the amount of improvising he gets to do, especially on Iron Man 2: It's not dissimilar to other studio movies, but the thing that's different about it is [director Jon Favreau] really likes to improvise. So we get to play more on this movie than you would on a lot of studio movies. Moon, with only Rockwell as the camera's focus, »

Moon Review

10 June 2009 1:51 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Short version: Moon is an interesting, well-acted film that takes what could have been cliched sci-fi conventions and explores them from a fresh angle.

Screen Rant reviews Moon

Moon is the debut feature film by writer/director Duncan Jones. The film stars Sam Rockwell, the voice of Kevin Spacey and… actually just those two, really. The film is set on the lunar base Selene in a future where Helium 3, a gas mined from the moon’s surface, holds the key to reversing Earth’s energy crisis.

Rockwell plays Sam Bell, the one-man team assigned to Selene on a three-year contract. Bell’s primary job is waiting around days on end for one of the corporation’s three automated lunar harvesters to register a full Helium 3 load, which he then extracts and jettisons to Earth on a small space transport.

Moon opens as Bell is coming to the end of his three-year term. »

HuffPost Review: Moon

10 June 2009 12:58 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Sam Rockwell is one of those underrated actors who works all the time in indie films but rarely seems to land anything larger than a supporting role in studio productions (most recently in Frost/Nixon). His resume is dotted with little-seen gems that might have made him a star if they'd had any exposure to a mass audience. Off the top of my head, I can come up with Box of Moonlight, Jerry and Tom, Lawn Dogs, Safe Men and last year's Choke. Add Moon to that list -- yet another small film I fear will only find an audience in the DVD/cable aftermarket. Moon is an acting tour de force in which Rockwell's performance -- or, more accurately, performances -- lift what could have been an intellectual exercise into an emotionally compelling movie. Rockwell plays Sam Bell, the lone employee on a mining »

Rockwell's Hammer in Iron Man 2 is Not the Comic Version

5 May 2009 7:33 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Sam Rockwell (Choke) will be portraying Justin Hammer, one of the classic Iron Man rogues in next summer's Iron Man 2, but don't expect to see the Marvel Comics version of the character. According to Rockwell, the character was updated for the movie:

They wanted to go with a rival for Tony Stark who is closer to his age, and make him American

When MTV showed Rockwell a copy of Iron Man #240 featuring Hammer, Rockwell joked:

That looks like Jeremy Irons. I guess they couldn't get Jeremy Irons for it.

Robert Downey Jr. returns in the title role, with Gwyneth Paltrow once again portraying Tony Stark's assistant, Pepper Potts, and Samuel L. Jackson resuming his role as Nick Fury. Iron Man 2 also stars Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Mickey Rourke as Whiplash.

Kate Mara (Shooter) and Clark Gregg (Choke) have joined the cast of Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2. Kate Mara Joins Iron Man 2

23 April 2009 2:00 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The ever-increasing cast of Iron Man 2 already includes Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Jon Favreau (who, of course, also directs), MIckey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Garry Shandling and John Slattery, but it landed two more names today, in Kate Mara and Clark Gregg.Mara, who you may remember from Brokeback Mountain (as Ledger's character's daughter) or Shooter, plays a character who's still under wraps. Looking at her, we're kinda wishing she was a little bit older and had been cast as Mary-Jane in Spider-Man, but we don't know who she's playing here.Gregg, however, returns as S.H.I.E.L.D. Clark Gregg and Kate Mara Join 'Iron Man 2'

Gregg who has been seen in "Iron Man" portraying agent Phil Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to reprise the role, while 26-year-old Mara takes the role that is still kept under wraps. "Iron Man 2" is scripted by "Tropic Thunder" co-scribbler Justin Theroux. It will have director Jon Favreau serving as its helmer and Robert Downey Jr. returning as the titular character. Don Cheadle is replacing Terrence Howard as Colonel James 'Rhodey' Rhodes. »

Kate Mara Joins and Clark Gregg Returns for Iron Man 2

22 April 2009 9:44 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Two minor casting updates for Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2. We Are Marshall actress Kate Mara has joined the cast, and Choke writer/director/actor Clark Gregg has officially returned to reprise his role as Agent Phil Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. We know who Gregg is set to play, but Mara's role is "being kept under wraps." That's a bit odd, considering Favreau and company are already shooting in Manhattan Beach. No hints as to who she might play, but I'm intrigued by her casting. We already know that Scarlett Johansson is playing Black Widow and Gwyneth Paltrow is back as Pepper Potts, so what other female characters are there? If you haven't been following Jon Favreau's Twitter, you should be, as he updates it quite often and occasionally posts cool photos like this one of his director's chair. So far it sounds like everything has been going great. »

'Moon' Trailer: Ground Control to Sam Rockwell

9 April 2009 11:05 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

You'd have to look long and hard to find a better, more underappreciated actor than Sam Rockwell. Remember that three-pack he turned in with Galaxy Quest, The Green Mile, and Charlie's Angels? Those films help lead him to George Clooney's Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and he simply killed it in that movie.

Ever since, though, it hasn't been easy sledding for Rockwell, but I sense he's mostly back on the radar now, thanks to a funny leading role in Choke and a good supporting turn in Frost/Nixon and the upcoming Iron Man 2. And judging by the comments from Sundance and what we can see of him in the new trailer for Duncan Jones' Moon, people should finally take notice again of what a rare find Sam Rockwell truly is.

DVD: Review: DVDs in Brief - February 25, 2009

25 February 2009 8:48 AM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

In spite of Fight Club’s eventual cult success, it took nine years for someone to attempt another film adaptation of a Chuck Palahniuk book, perhaps because their particulate, trivia-collection style doesn’t lend itself to film. Proof comes in the form of the flat, distracted Choke (Fox), in which Sam Rockwell flounders as a man who’s packed with quirks—sex addiction, a senile mom, a crappy job at a colonial-themed tourist park, a complicated choking-in-restaurants scam—but still doesn’t have much personality… Barry Levinson’s What Just Happened (Magnolia) transformed Art Linson’s wry, inside-Hollywood memoir about »

Choke DVD Review

23 February 2009 9:05 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Spawned from the same twisted mind of Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club), Choke is somehow more outrageous than a man literally fighting his own split personality.  However, those looking for another faithful adaptation of Chuck’s unique writing style will be disappointed by the lack of cinematic style here.

Clark Gregg’s first outing as director is a mixed bag of sexual perversion, sacrilegious satire, and juvenile humor.  It centers on Palahniuk’s strange fascination with emotional support groups, but droops to conventional when exploring the reasons for the protagonist’s degenerate behavior.

Sam Rockwell expertly plays Victor Mancini, a sex addict with an Oedipal complex and a shameless string of sexual conquests.  Surprisingly (considering the rest of the subject matter), the title doesn’t refer to any sort of sexual asphyxiation, but a scam Victor uses to receive affection from total strangers.  He’s perfected an act of staggering around »
