Back when we first reported on Calvo's planned Lynchian Snow White adaptation, the news went far and wide, ending up on the AP wire. In the meantime, funding came through for The Melancholy Fantastic, the first in a trilogy of films "featuring a strong female lead character suffering from mental illness", which started shooting this past weekend, and now, we have the first incredible looking stills to show you. What's it about? Something wholly fantastic. Read on.
Against the objections of a life-size paper doll, a delusional young woman falls for a Goth in this unconventional holiday story. The Melancholy Fantastic weaves elements of classical existentialism into a disturbing psychological holiday thriller.
Tmf stars Amy Crowdis, Robin Taylor (Assassination of a High School President), Josh Caras and Geneva Carr.
Check out the stills after the break!

Despite an interesting cast and passionate pleas from more than one film critic, Brett Simon’s Assassination of a High School President is the latest project to be burped out of the gaping, bankrupt maw of the Yari Film Group and directly onto the DVD market. Yari’s failure has claimed some terrific films - most notably a pair of Rod Lurie movies - and although Assassination doesn’t quite deserve to be lumped in with the best of the studio’s aborted litter, it’s certainly better than most direct-to-video projects, and well worth a rental and 90 minutes of your time. My review after the jump:
Sort of a clownish, noir-scented blend of Rushmore and The Usual Suspects, Assassination stars the deliberately Jason Schwartzmann-like Reece Thompson as Bobby Funke (it’s pronounced “Funk,” but everyone says it “Funky”), a wannabe cub reporter for the paper at St. Donovan’s High, »

Can the media alter the public's perception of an actor? I believe so - that's why we have the likes of Megan Fox hugging the headlines and getting the covers of men's magazines, while a lot of more talented young actresses could not even manage to get featured and have interviews. If you think about it, what has she done in the movies to deserve so much publicity and attention? - - -
- - - Some may argue, 'hey, don't blame her, she's just good at playing the Hollywood game, and she got a shrewd agent managing her career!'. That maybe so and yes, I agree when others say 'she'll not last another year - others will soon take over'. There are those who may say 'Agents and talent managers always take care of their wards - that's why stars have a public image and a private one'. »

DVD Playhouse—October 2009

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories »

Brick could have gotten by on the novelty and cleverness of its high-school-as-noir-wasteland conceit alone, but style, wit, and fine performances elevated it to something more than a smartass cinephile stunt. In contrast, the one thing Assassination Of A High School President—which just received a discreet direct-to-dvd burial after playing Sundance in 2008—has going for it is a nifty gimmick borrowed from Brick, which makes it feel awfully redundant. The not-so-clever twist is that the film’s dogged truth-seeker (Reece Thompson) is an aspiring journalist (emphasis on aspiring, as he’s never actually finished a story) rather than »

Fitting itself nicely into a sub-genre dominated in recent times by 2002's cult indie winners Igby Goes Down and The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, Assassination of a High School President is a clever, dark look at the lives of teenagers who are rather more intelligent than they're given credit for. Fitting in nicely with those other representatives, Assassination has some younger people you've seen around, a big name actor as guest star, and gives us to understand that we shouldn't underestimate these young, but largely because they really are up to no good. Bobby Funke (Reece Thompson), in the spirit of something like an homage to film-noir, is a reporter for the school newspaper who has an itch to investigate something, whether there's something to investigate or not. »

In case you happened to miss the 5-minute extended clip that we posted recently (or maybe you just don’t want to sit through it), you’re in luck as the new theatrical trailer for Roland Emmerich’s 2012 is basically just a condensed version of that sequence. And we have it here for your destructive viewing pleasure.
Not that story really matters in Emmerich’s films (such as The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day and 10,000 BC), but 2012 centers around the Mayan doomsday prophecy that the world will end on December 21st, 2012. We follow a divorced father and writer (John Cusack) as he uses his knowledge of ancient prophecies to help ensure the human race isn’t completely wiped out from a series of global disasters.
But enough of the “plot,” let’s get on with more of the destruction! Thanks to FirstShowing, here’s the latest trailer for 2012:

Assassination of a High School President is yet another Hollywood tragedy that had all the promise in the world, but, through bad turns of offscreen circumstance, never got the shot in theaters it deserved.
The film was a hit at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and people were calling it the next Brick - pretty much because both films are homages to the Film Noir era, set against the backdrop of modern high school. After the Yari Group, the owners of the film, went bankrupt, the film’s fate was left to question. Assassination of a High School President has finally been released direct-to-dvd this week and we’ve got the review for you.
The plot of Assassination of a High School President follows Bobby Funke (Reece Thompson), a hard-nosed reporter (and geeky sophomore) working for the school paper, who can never quite finish his epic conspiracy stories. While covering a piece profiling St. »

Check them out.

With Halloween right around the corner we've got a ton of very different and very awesome scare flicks streeting this week. For one, we've got Lionsgate's Ghost House Underground Boxed Set which comes at us form Sam Raimi's banner. It includes Mark Lewis' The Thaw (amazon), Brit shocker, The Children (amazon), the Jack Ketchum cult classic, Offspring (amazon) and the new one from Blair Witch co-director Seventh Moon (amazon). You can read more about these titles in our mega-review.
Another film we've all been awaiting is Tom Jane's directorial debut, Dark Country (trailer, amazon). It was filmed to be 3D so it's unfortunate to see that the release is 2D only.
Next up G. Cameron Romero's (yep, that's the son of George Romero) backwoods shocker, Staunton Hill (amazon). And not to be forgotten is Not Forgotten (trailer, amazon), Anchor Bay's release of the black magic mixed »

I would have gone to see Assassination of a High School President if they.d released it in theaters just because Bruce Willis was in it. I knew he was only a supporting part, but I still would have given it a chance. There probably aren.t enough people like me to warrant its release, because otherwise the film is indeed straight to video fare.
Assassination of a High School President
It really tries too hard to be quirky and edgy but it.s got nothing to say. The Chinatown references are really strained, and that.s too obscure for the audience this film is aimed at. Heck, it.s too obscure for most film snobs. Mainly it.s just really boring. »

What do the DVD release gods have in store for us today? This week's biggest releases would have to be the Jack Black/Michael Cera comedy Year One and Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on Blu-ray, but looking beyond that there are a handful of smaller movies worth checking out. Both Trick r' Treat and Assassination of a High School President are movies that ended up going direct to DVD despite fairly positive reviews, so now is your chance to check them out. Also out this week are two amazing documentaries, Anvil! The Story of Anvil and Not Quite Hollywood, plus Blu-ray releases for Audition, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and some holiday classics including A Charlie Brown Christmas. Will you be buying or renting anything this week? Year One [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) My Life in Ruins [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) Trick 'r Treat [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) Assassination of a High School President [7] Seventh Moon [8] (DVD, »

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Platinum Edition) I just posted my review of this one (read it here) and I tried to keep it as short as possible all while managing to gush all over it. Seriously, this baby is packed with goodies and the film simply looks spectacular as Walt Disney's first feature length animated film comes to life in high definition. Snow White is 72-years-old and boy does it age well.
I reviewed the two-disc edition (or three-disc if you count the included DVD version of the film), but there are a ton of additional versions to buy including the collector's pack featured in the image to the left and then one that comes with a bunch of stuffed toys. Oh, and if you buy it at Amazon you can enter the promotional code Snowhite and »

Break out the glitter glove, put on your surgical mask and hold firm to your monkey because once you hear the opening music to the Michael Jackson rehearsal footage movie, I promise you will want to dance.
The last time we talked about the This Is It movie, the conversation quickly turned to the negative side of his life. Maybe rightfully so, maybe not; either way I urge you to watch the trailer below and tell me, look me right in the eye and tell me that it doesn’t bring back a flood of memories from your childhood.
Last week we got the release of the This Is It official poster for the Kenny Ortega (High School Musical) directed backstage, rehearsal footage movie. I thought the movie was going to be playing for a regular run like most films, but as the trailer points out, it will be in theaters for two weeks only. »
