As low budget movies rake in the cash this year, star vehicles are tanking. 2009 has been a year rich in unexpected successes and flops, leading Hollywood studios to consider dropping big name stars for future projects, or at least drastically reducing their clout. While small productions like "The Hangover", "District 9" and "Paranormal Activity" have been immensely successful in the past months, several big budget star vehicles have tanked at the box office. Among the "victims": "A Christmas Carol" starring Jim Carrey, "Surrogates" starring Bruce Willis, "Funny People" starring Adam Sandler, "Imagine That" starring Eddie Murphy and "Duplicity" starring Julia Roberts all did much worse than expected. The upcoming "Twilight" sequel "New Moon" will not likely change the trend, either. The saga, made relatively cheaply and starring young talent whose stardom comes from the first episode, is expected to beat all the other competing movies, confirming the question: are stars still really necessary? »

We haven’t been keeping enough tabs on the adaptation of Red, based on the comic book mini-series created by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner and published by DC/Wildstorm between 2003-2004. The film adaptation first popped onto our radar when action man Bruce Willis signed-on to star, followed soon after by the news that acclaimed actor Morgan Freeman would be joining Willis . Completing the trifecta of acting heavyweights, last week we heard that Helen Mirren was onboard for Red; that’s three Golden Globe and/or Oscar-winners coming together for an obscure comic book flick! Crazy, right?
Well it gets even crazier, as we now have more famous names to add to the cast list of Red… Last week news broke that Mary Louise Parker (Weeds) and John C. Reily were in talks for the film, and today we learn (thanks to Collider) that they will be joined by »

*Cht is nearing 100 posts, so we decided to induct Radha Mitchell who starred in Silent Hill and Rogue, one of the best killer animal movies ever! You can also catch Micthell in Breck Eisner's upcoming Crazies remake on February 26, 2010. Mitchell has appeared nude in High Art (1998) and Feast of Love. She was also recently in Surrogates with Bruce Willis and starred in Pitch Black with Vin Diesel. A very impressive resume and the reason we are welcoming her to our Cht section. »

Overture Films sent us this awesome new photo of actress Radha Mitchell from the upcoming film “The Crazies”. The film is a reinvention loosely based upon the George Romero classic about the inhabitants of a small Iowa town beset by insanity and then death after a mysterious toxin contaminates their water supply. Directed by Breck Eisner (Creature from the Black Lagoon, Flash Gordon) and produced by Rob Cowan, “The Crazies” stars Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood, Elektra Luxx), Radha Mitchell (Rogue, Surrogates) , Danielle Panabaker and Joe Anderson and will hit theaters on February 26th, 2010. Sony's Michael Jackson documentary "This Is It" is leading the worldwide box office, and I'm not surprised. The film delivered a strong debut overseas, scoring $68.5 million in 108 markets since its release Wednesday. That brings its worldwide total to $101 million.
Still going strong internationally was Pixar's animated adventure "Up," which dropped one spot and landed at No. 2 with a weekend gross of $12.8 million. The film's total gross currently stands at $352.7 million.
Meanwhile, Disney productions "Surrogates" and "G-Force" tied for third place with $6.1 million each. "Force" brought its international total to $148 million, while "Surrogates" with Bruce Willis reached a cumulative gross of $60.3 million. »

Between Dimensions [1] is a continuing feature that examines science-fiction on the screen in all of its forms: big or small, good or bad. The recent Bruce Willis film Surrogates reminded me of a French film called Chrysalis. Their shared idea – what makes up our identity – can play out many ways. (All the films based on Pkd stories are testament to that). My advice? Just skip Surrogates. Rent Chrysalis. Julien Leclercq has directed a smoothly styled film noir (more correctly, un very slick filme bleu-noire) of French cops searching for the abductors of young women who, as illegal aliens, are highly vulnerable to exploitation. Expertly threaded into this somewhat generic story is a dramatic neurological breakthrough. It gives the film its energy by spinning in and out of the basic cops and crooks with inventiveness and a lot of visual elan. The backbone of Chrysalis’ story is tough-minded cops doing their job in a futuristic Paris. »

Enough rumored Blu-ray Disc release date rumors have crossed my desk to warrant putting together this article so you can get an idea of what the coming months hold for the high-def home video format.
The first rumors suggests the sci-fi horror thriller Pandorum will make fast tracks to Blu-ray on December 22, followed by a devilishly hungry Megan Fox in Jennifer's Body on December 29. I tend to believe the latter is more plausible than the former but we should find out soon enough either way.
The new year should kick off with the direct-to-video sequel Smokin' Aces 2: Assassins Ball.
January 12 is looking to debut the remake of Fame two weeks prior to the original arriving on Blu-ray. Also a possibility for this date is Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 and Summit's critically acclaimed The Hurt Locker which I personally cannot wait to see.

Rick Marvin’s big orchestral score for the Bruce Willis sci-fi thriller Surrogates will be released on CD and as a download by Lakeshore Records next month. This is an unusual case where Walt Disney Pictures (or rather Touchstone Pictures) has licenced the soundtrack rights to an external company. Rick Marvin’s score for the film is an energetic and exciting action score influenced by Hollywood legends such as Jerry Goldsmith and ... »

Back in the summer of 2008 Screen Rant reported on the fact that John McClane himself, Bruce Willis had attached himself to star in the still up and coming video game adaptation, Kane & Lynch. In case you’re not familiar with it, the game is about a former mercenary (Kane) and a psychopath (Lynch) forced to “work” together. Fast forward (or “flash forward,” to give a hat tip to ABC’s great new TV show) more than a year and we have solid confirmation of Willis’ casting from the producers of Kane & Lynch themselves.
Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter recently spoke to the guys over at Collider while at the 2009 Scream Awards where, amongst other video game adaptations, they spoke a little about Kane & Lynch. On top of letting us know about a tentative production start date of early 2010 (Spring or early Summer at the latest), they also confirmed Willis’ casting with a smooth and simple, »

This week:
The box office gets Wild; a Vampire Chronicles star moves to Cradlewood; Everything Must Go for Will Ferrell; Owen, Keener and Schwimmer Trust each other and Terrance Mallick’s Tree of Life withers in 2009.
Box Office
After a few years in post-production, Spike Jonze’s Where The Wild Things Are took the top spot with a mighty $32.4 million over the weekend. Catering to children and adults alike, it looks like this adaptation of the children’s book might make it to the century barrier.
Law Abiding Citizen came an impressive second with $21 million. The thriller has given a boost to the careers of Jamie Fox and Gerard Butler whose last movies underperformed.
Paranormal Activity scared up $20 million from only 760 screens for a $33 million total. It looks like the sky is the limit as Halloween approaches.
Couples Retreat plunged 47% giving the comedy a weekend take of just under $18 million. »

Ready for your robot doppelganger? While we can't yet use robots the way they do in Surrogates, today's technology suggests the time will come when we can. When that happens, each of us will be faced with a choice: Live life from the safety of a "stim chair" or face the world in person like the Dreads. No, it’s not yet another “Highlander” sequel/reboot or TV series, in case that’s what you were thinking. It’s called “The Quickening”, and it’s a new cop show from A&E (cause, obviously, there isn’t nearly enough cop shows on TV at the moment) set to star Radha Mitchell, known primarily for her movie roles in films like “Silent Hill”, “Surrogates”, and the upcoming “The Crazies” remake. While this will be Mitchell’s first foray onto American TV land as the lead, it won’t be the first time an actress known for her movie work decided to take the leap onto the small screen. She follows in the footsteps of other notable movie leading ladies Kyra Sedgwick (the star of TNT’s cop show “The Closer”) and Holly Hunter (the star of TNT’s other cop show “Saving Grace” — gee, starting to see a pattern here? »

Note: These are early box office reports, final tallies may differ slightly.
While Zombieland failed to retain it's top position at the box office this week, early indicators point to another strong weekend as the horror-comedy drew another $15 million dollars bumping Zombieland's two week total earnings up to about $48 million dollars. And though the Peter Billingsley-directed comedy Couples Retreat grabbed the top spot with a surprising $35 million dollar debut weekend, the real buzz is surrounding the independent spine tingler Paranormal Activity which elicited $7 million dollars over the weekend seeing the films box office ranking leap from 20th place all the way up to #5. It should be noted that Paranormal Activity is currently playing in less than 160 theatres.
The Bruce Willis action packed sci-fi feature Surrogates fell two more spots over the weekend, sliding in at #6 with another $4 million dollars (the film has now earned a total of $32.5 million dollars »

Couples Retreat, starring Vince Vaughn, has debuted at the top of the Us box office with $$35 million. The rom-com knocked off the horror-comedy Zombieland, which slipped to number two with $$15 million over the weekend. The animated feature Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs has fallen to the number three position with $$12 million, followed by the 3D re-release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 at number four with $$7.6 million. This week's highest climber comes from the horror film Paranormal Activity, which jumps 15 spots up to number five with $$7 million. Alert commenters Jp and Jm called it, Paranormal Activity was destined to make the top ten. But even they didn't see it cracking the top five with an astounding $7.1m in 159 theaters. That per theater average of $44k puts them only a thousand dollars per theater behind the monstrous Miley opening last year. It even beat Surrogates overall, even though it spotted them 2800 theaters. An amazing result, and it wasn't even the only one... #1 movie predicted correctly: 2 Weeks In A Row 1. Couples Retreat A throwback result for Universal, it pays to be the only game in town. I don't believe people will see "anything" because it's the weekend, but I do believe that having a solid marketing budget and known stars will help you for at least 72 hours. Result: 35.3 million (My rank: #1, $11.3m off) 2. Zombieland This October is around five percent ahead of last October, but there isn't a title »

This week:
Vince Vaughn Retreats to the top of the box office; another comic book adaptation makes it way up the Gravel road to the big screen; Michael Bay kills The Texas Chainsaw Massacre; Ryan Reynolds hitches a ride with Motorcade and New Line needs a Vacation - but will Chevy Chase be invited?
Box Office
Swingers duo Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau landed in the top spot with Couples Retreat. The comedy snatched an impressive $35 million from movie-goers despite bad reviews.
Woody Harrelson had to settle for second place with Zombieland. The horror-comedy took $15 million from Friday to Monday, dropping a decent 39% - it looks like the film has a chance of hitting $100 million.
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs banked another $12 million for third place. With $96 million in the bank it looks like Meatballs are going to be the order of the day.
Toy Stories 1 and 2 in 3D were fourth with another $7.5 million. »

Assassination of a High School President is yet another Hollywood tragedy that had all the promise in the world, but, through bad turns of offscreen circumstance, never got the shot in theaters it deserved.
The film was a hit at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and people were calling it the next Brick - pretty much because both films are homages to the Film Noir era, set against the backdrop of modern high school. After the Yari Group, the owners of the film, went bankrupt, the film’s fate was left to question. Assassination of a High School President has finally been released direct-to-dvd this week and we’ve got the review for you.
The plot of Assassination of a High School President follows Bobby Funke (Reece Thompson), a hard-nosed reporter (and geeky sophomore) working for the school paper, who can never quite finish his epic conspiracy stories. While covering a piece profiling St. »
