Bringing up dino

There are a lot of episodes of 'Tiny Toon Adventures' made up of two or more segments linked by a certain theme of the episode rather than one individual story, and mostly do that well though there are instances of unevenness as well. It is though easy to forget that there were episodes of the show that had just one story, and there are some great examples of that type of episode (i.e. "Her Wacky Highness", one of my favourites of the show).

"Rock n Roar" is pleasant enough, it is sweet with moments of smart writing and Buster is a great character as always (one of the show's best). There are though much funnier, wittier and more imaginative 'Tiny Toon Adventures' episodes, and consider it one of the weaker single-story episodes. By the show's standards, "Rock n Roar" is on the somewhat tame side which makes it slightly bland. Am not saying that the episode is bad, the show has just done better that's all.

Will start with what didn't quite work for me. The writing has been sharper and wittier in previous episodes (and sharper and wittier in following ones too), all the best lines belong to Buster such as the vegetarian T-Rex line but they are not among his most inspired. Wouldn't have said no to more of the other 'Tiny Toon Adventures' characters, with there being a good deal, and a little too much, of Buster and Rover.

It would help if the dinosaur character Rover was more compelling, the cuteness factor was there but that was pretty much it personality-wise and he is a type of character that has been said many times in animation and with not much variation. The story is not bad and it has real moments of charm, but there's not much special here and it could have done with a zanier pace.

On the other hand, the animation is fine. It is crisp, with bright colourful backgrounds, beautiful colours and well drawn characters. The music is as good as the old Looney Tunes cartoons (prime-Looney Tunes, not most of the 60s ones) in being characterful and adding to the action, if not quite enhancing it in the same way. It always helps to have a memorable theme tune, and the one for 'Tiny Toon Adventures' is suitably hip and very catchy.

"Rock n Roar" does amuse every now and again, Babs has some nice moments, the references are easy to spot and don't feel random and the central relationship is sweet. Montana Max is put to entertaining use and there are parts where the dialogue is clever and puts a smile on the face. The voice acting is great from particularly Charlie Adler having the lion's share of the material.

Concluding, decent but not great. 6/10
