One of the ER patients is a physicist who says she has been working her whole career to create a quantum processor, which at the time was only theoretical. However it wasn't too long after this episode that the first quantum processor was created, in January of 2019 IBM built the first supercomputer powered with a quantum processor called the IBM Q System One. By using liquid nitrogen to cool the components of the CPU to a temperature just above absolute zero (-273.15 °C or -458.87 °F) a process known as a quantum state is created. In a super cold quantum state the laws of physics change, it allows atoms to exist simultaneously in two places in space and time, how this is possible is still unknown. While the exact process is too complex to explain a quantum processor uses the movement and location of these physics defying atoms to compute information, and it allows it to do so at speeds exponentially faster than a conventional processor. A typical desktop CPU can do about calculations on the scale of billions per second (gigaflop) the System One CPU can do at least 10 teraflops (10 trillion calculations per second).
