This Week on DVD: 9, Paranormal Activity, Jennifer’s Body

11 hours ago | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

There are only a handful of new DVD releases hitting stores today, but there are some decent titles that chose to wait until after the holiday rush to make their home video debut. The indie horror phenomenon Paranormal Activity rushes to stores today, along with the CG-animated sci-fi adventure 9 and Diablo Cody's horror-comedy Jennifer's Body starring Megan Fox (both of which disappointed at the box office). Diablo Cody's Showtime series The United States of Tara is also out today, along with one of the best new shows on television, Glee, which is unfortunately opting to nickel and dime fans with partial season sets. Still need more? The direct-to-dvd WWE action film The Marine 2 is out today too. Let's just hope it lives up to the original. Paranormal Activity [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) Jennifer's Body [3] (+ Blu-ray [4]) 9 [5] (+ Blu-ray [6]) A Perfect Getaway [7] (+ Blu-ray [8]) Carriers [9] Weather Girl [10] The Marine 2 [11] (+ Blu-ray [12]) Diagnosis: Death [13] Facing Ali [14] Glee: Season 1, Vol. »

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: December 29, 2009

Paranormal Activity I have talked about this film to death, but now that it's on home video I guess I can be done with it. One thing I can be certain of, is Paramount won't be using my pull quote any longer for this one that said, "You must see this film in theaters," because now that would simply be counter-productive. However, if you do check this one out at home be sure to turn all the lights off and do your best to enjoy it, and don't allow some loudmouth trying to mask their fright with jokes ruin the experience. This film was a lot of fun for me in theaters and hopefully that can be duplicated at home. A Perfect Getaway This was one of my eight Honorable Mentions of 2009 yesterday and I definitely recommend you check it out, »

Weekly DVD & Blu-ray Chopping List 12/29/2009

22 hours ago | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The past few weeks haven't been exactly stellar when it comes to genre fare hitting the home market. That changes with this installment of the famous Fangoria Chopping List. From the breakout hit Paranormal Activity to the family-friendly 9, to the sleeper hit Carriers and the much-discussed Jennifer's Body, it seems there's something for everyone this week. For those of you that had a Blu Christmas, all the bigger titles are also available on Blu-Ray.

Check out the list below the jump!

Available on DVD and Blu-Ray

From visionary filmmakers Tim Burton (The Nightmare Before Christmas) and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) and Academy Award®-nominated director Shane Acker comes this visually stunning and original epic adventure. A Perfect Getaway Unrated Director’s Cut Blu-ray Review

28 December 2009 5:33 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The problem with the thriller is that formalists like Brian De Palma and Bryan Singer have spoiled them for normal people and critics. We expect our genre entries to confound us, or at the very east to be deconstructions of the genre. Forget dramatic irony, we want expert sequences, and tension to abound. And so David Twohy deserves some credit for what he attempts in A Perfect Getaway. He is aware of genre constructs and addresses them, but he does so in such a way that when he removes the tablecloth and the plates are still standing, no one’s so much impressed as ready for the third act. My review of A Perfect Getaway after the jump, jump (please continue).

Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich star as Cliff and Cydney, a recently married couple in Hawaii for their honeymoon. They run across a creepy couple Cleo and Kale (Marley »

Top 25 Movies of 2009: Honorable Mentions and Movies #21 - 25

Top 25 Movies of 2009 Introduction, Honorable Mentions and Movies #21 - 25

What's your overall opinion of the movies of 2009? I ask because moving into December I would have called it a downer year, and if you base your opinion of a year's worth of movies on the blockbusters of the year you may be a bit mixed. While films such as Star Trek, District 9 and Avatar found fans all around the world, films such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Terminator Salvation, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, Angels and Demons and Watchmen were met with mixed-to-highly-negative reviews from critics and filmgoers alike. A lot of money was made, but I think we all know money doesn't always translate to quality.

There were some out of the blue surprises such as The Hangover and Paranormal Activity and Pixar again impressed us all with Up. Personally, it's the smaller to mid-level films »

Blu-ray review: A Perfect Getaway

Blu-ray Rating: 4/10

If you want to read a review that focuses on the film A Perfect Getaway, check out James’ review over Here.

David Twohy using the beautiful tropical setting of a Hawaiian island is an interesting choice for the film’s story about killer(s) on the loose. Death lurking against the backdrop of such a gorgeous place makes for an unsettling contrast in tone and visuals- in short, it’s effective.

Chilling Trailer for ‘Frozen’

26 December 2009 11:40 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

When the trailer for the new Adam Green thriller Frozen hit the web the other day, I thought, “Great someone finally made a movie about my first girlfriend from high school.” I was slightly disappointed to find out that wasn’t the case. However, that doesn’t mean I can’t keep my fingers crossed that somebody will one day write about her…but I digress.

Frozen is a actually new single-setting thriller in the style of Open Water and this year’s grossly under-appreciated The Canyon.

Shawn Ashmore (X2), Emma Bell (Gracie) and Kevin Zegers (Fifty Dead Men Walking) star as three college students out for a good time on the slopes, skiing and snowboarding. With the day winding down, they decide to take one last run at the mountain and as they are riding the chair lift it stops about halfway up and then the mountain goes dark as the resort closes, »

Boos! & Whoop-doos!: 12 Months of Toilet Plunkers and Dumpster Diamonds!

23 December 2009 9:55 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The End of 2009? Whoop-doo! This year has been one hellatious shit storm from the get-go. Pregnant ladies and babies, The Great Depression Part II, pig flu, more than a handful of horrible shootings, a balloon boy, Tiger's indiscretions, and our first black president. Not to mention more dead celebrities than I can shake a stick at. Every time I turned around, some other atrocious calamity was happening right before my eyes. Making 2009 one of the most interesting years of this entire decade. According to Michael Ruppert in his film Collapse its only going to get worse before it gets better. Yes, the Teens are going to see more than half of your friends and family dead. Take account of the folks around you. By the time 2020 rears its ugly head, most of these people will be gone. Turned to dust and painful memories. My advice to you this coming New Year? »

Terror Tidbits (Fango #290): Mad About The Crazies

21 December 2009 10:00 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Blam! Brains and blood splatter the windshield of a big rig as the character who just took a shot to the head flies backward, slamming down on the concrete. Elsewhere in the truck bay/workshop, the smell of burning flesh hangs heavy in the air (actually, the chemical stench of a previously safely-on-fire stuntman). Gunfire echoes in the hangar-sized building; “Cut!” is called, playback watched, and then on to another setup on the remake of George A. Romero’s The Crazies.

It’s a slightly nippy March night in Georgia, and day 12 of the nine-week shoot on the latest gruesome facelift of a ’70s horror movie, being directed on a significantly higher budget by Breck Eisner (whose credits include Sahara and Fear Itself’s The Sacrifice). Having an estimated $25 million to play with gives Eisner the opportunity to take Romero’s core concept and give it an action-packed approach the »

Nyt's Manohla Dargis Offers Her Top 13 of 2009

18 December 2009 1:38 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Just recently New York Times critic Manohla Dargis made some waves with an interview she gave using some salty language and calling out a few people here and there. Today she delivers a list of her favorite films of 2009.

While beating the dead horse that is the hatred for such films as G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen she also has a few kind words for some films that didn't make her ultimate list such as Star Trek, Julie and#038; Julia (agree keep the Julie), Duplicity, A Perfect Getaway, Up and A Single Man.

I have listed her top 13 directly below as she listed them, "in order of their domestic release" with links to my reviews where available. Following that is a list of her "other favorites." Like I said when I linked to her interview, "I have mixed feelings when it comes to »

More Love For The Hurt Locker, Plus Basterds, The White Ribbon And More ...

16 December 2009 9:01 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

It's verging on a sweep for Kathryn Bigelow.  Fresh off the Golden Globe nom for The Hurt Locker, the Toronto Film Critic's Association has just published their list of award winners and while the film itself didn't get the best picture nod, there Bigelow is again as best director.  The fact that they picked Nicolas Cage as best actor for his role in Bad Lieutenant makes me particularly proud of where I live, as does the general diversity of the rest of the list.  If we're not careful people might actually start to think that Toronto's critics actually watch more than is available in the multiplex ...

New ‘Crazies’ Trailer Ups The Creepy Factor

11 December 2009 6:48 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

A couple of months ago, we brought you the first trailer for Breck Eisner directed remake of George Romero’s horror movie The Crazies. It was long on style and short on substance and the use of Gary Jules’ great song Mad World as a musical backdrop just didn’t really work. My guess is they choose it just based on the title and I seriously doubt the song will be on the soundtrack.

Now Eisner has released another trailer exclusively with Yahoo! Movies (you can head over there if you want to see the HD version).

The Crazies takes place in Ogden Marsh, Iowa. The type of small town where everyone knows their neighbors and they all show up to watch the high school baseball game. Everything is built off Main Street where (I’ll just bet you) there is only one stop light and it’s blinking yellow and red after midnight. »

“The Chronicles of Riddick” Sequel Begins Scouting in New Zealand

3 December 2009 4:10 PM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

According to Vin Diesel’s Facebook page, the third Chronicles of Riddick film is about to get underway.

The “Chronicles of Riddick 3” is currently in pre-production and has already begun scouting locations in New Zealand.

Diesel’s Fb status update:

The Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already… that’s exciting.

Diesel first played the gruff, sliver-eyed anti-hero Riddick in the well-received cult hit “Pitch Black” in 2000. Four years later he reprised the role in 2004’s generally panned big-budget flop “The Chronicles of Riddick“.

Diesel has also voiced the character in the animated short “Dark Fury” and the video games “Escape from Butcher Bay” and “Assault on Dark Athena“.

In August, director David Twohy (Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick, A Perfect Getaway) discussed that he’d sketched out two possible ideas for continuing the films and was working to get the third film in front of the »

Chronicles of Riddick Sequel Begins Location Scouting

2 December 2009 4:17 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

For those of you looking for the return of Vin Diesel as arguably his best on-screen character, Riddick, it looks like it’s one step closer to reality.

On his Facebook page yesterday, Diesel put up an update which included a line revealing that the team behind the next Riddick movie were scouting out locations already – a great thing to hear for those of us anticipating the sequel to 2004’s Chronicles of Riddick.

“The Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already… that’s exciting”

The last we heard on the Riddick 3 front was from writer David Twohy, the man who wrote A Perfect Getaway in addition to writing and directing the Riddick films. That was back in August and at the time, he was working out two ideas for the sequel, one of which that would be Rated R. There was studio interest in another PG-13 version, but »

Exclusive: Producer Talks 30 Days of Night: Dark Days From the Set

23 November 2009 11:59 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Dread Central hit the set of Sony’s 30 Days of Night: Dark Days earlier this month - the film wraps principal photography today in Vancouver, Canada, under the watchful eye of co-scripter (with Steve Niles) and director Ben Ketai - and while there sat down with producer Jr Young (among others) to discuss the flick (cast interviews to come).

“This is a very edgy film,” Young, who previously produced The Messengers, told Dread while intently watching a scene being played out in video village – a scene which featured a rather hysterical and bloody actress (Katherine Isabelle) pleading for her life. “Ben knows this world. I think it comes natural to him.”

Starring Kiele (A Perfect Getaway) Sanchez, Mia (De Palma’s The Black Dahlia) Kirschner, Rhys ("Entourage") Coiro, Diora (Night of the Demons) Baird, Harold ("Lost") Perrineau, Troy (A Marine Story) Ruptash, Jackson Berlin, John De Santis, Marco Sorian, Monique (Cabin in the Woods) Ganderton, »
