Interview: Marrying Irish Humour & Filmmaking Talent, 'Happy Ever Afters' in Cinemas Dec 26

23 December 2009 1:29 AM, PST | IFTN | See recent IFTN news »

'Happy Ever Afters', the debut feature film from writer and director Stephen Burke (Anner House, No Tears) comes down the aisle on December 26th with the premise that sometimes the happiest day of all can be the most heartbreaking. Iftn chats to Burke and two of the film's stars Tom Riley and Jade Yourell. The film's plot is anything but straightforward: Freddie, played by Tom Riley (Lost in Austen, St. Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold) and Maura, played by Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky, An Education) are getting married, just not to each other. While Freddie is entering his second marriage with the neurotic Sophie, played by Jade Yourell (Waiting for Dublin, The Longest Day), Maura's is more concerned with her pockets than her heart in marrying 'Doctors' star, Ariyon Bakare's Wilson. Then, when the two wedding parties end up at the same reception venue, »

Discuss: Should Gay Actors Stay in the Closet?

3 December 2009 2:35 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

A few days before Meredith Baxter (the mom from Family Ties) came out of the closet, the always-outspoken Rupert Everett had some choice words for gay actors: get comfy in the closet. Coincidentally, Everett's new movie St. Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold, has him playing Camilla Fritton, an eccentric headmistress who looks like a cross between the Queen Mum and Madame the puppet. In the previous St. Trinians, which I couldn't sit through, he also played her brother, Carnaby.

The openly gay actor blames coming out of the closet for the state of his career, telling The Guardian, "The fact is that you could not be, and still cannot be, a 25-year-old homosexual trying to make it in the British film business or the American film business or even the Italian film business. It just doesn't work and you're going to hit a brick wall at some point. »

Adolescent Anarchy & Rebellion in England: St. Trinian's & An Education

23 October 2009 6:51 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Neither St. Trinian's nor An Education (to a lesser extent) has been a total darling of American critics, but each film celebrates the rebellion and anarchy of adolescence, which is a rite of passage in almost every culture. St. Trinian's is to the U.K. what Rocky Horror Picture Show is to the U.S. Even though St. Trinian's is among the U.K.'s most popular (and highest grossing) independent films in recent years, it has been variously described by U.S. film critics as "vapid" and "a mess." The film is a campy, kitschy farce on anarchy and adolescence, which pokes fun at snobby, traditional English girls' schools and revives the U.K's national obsession about a series of films with the St. Trinian imprimatur that appeared in the 1950s. The plot revolves around a clever caper devised by the rowdy and resourceful St. »

The Week in Film: "An Education" beats a "Retreat," plus new trailers

9 October 2009 9:23 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Thirty Republican senators voted down an amendment by Al Franken to take away government funds from defense contractors who prevent their employees from pursuing legal action for workplace assault or sexual discrimination, but luckily it passed anyway.

Meanwhile, David Letterman admitted to affairs with his employees, and his ratings are higher than ever.

Fix your boss with a “no means no” stare and let’s talk about this week’s movies.

The weekend’s big release is Couples Retreat, and while the resort-set movie always looks postcard-pretty — which is never a given, since lush Greek locales couldn’t save Mamma Mia! or My Life in Ruins from looking washed-out and awful — the script is rather problematic.

Four couples (Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, Vince Vaughn and Malin Akerman, Jon Favreau and Kristin Davis, Faizon Love and Kali Hawk) fly off to a tropical paradise, but three of the pairs don »

The Week in Film: "Whip It" good, "Lying" bad and cool new trailers

2 October 2009 8:08 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Reading about the health care reform battle has gotten depressing — except for that awesome Florida congressman who basically told the Republicans to cram it with walnuts when they demanded he apologize for saying the crux of the Gop health plan was "die quickly" — so let’s talk about movies for a bit.

Drew Barrymore makes a crowd-pleasing debut as a director with Whip It, an entertaining saga about a mousy teen (Juno’s Ellen Page) in small-town Texas who blossoms when she lies about her age and joins an Austin roller derby team.

In a year that's given us such awful movies like The Ugly Truth and All About Steve, finally here’s a chick flick that doesn’t seem to hate chicks.

The socko supporting cast includes Barrymore, Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis, Alia Sawkat (Arrested Development), Zoë Bell, Eve and Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden.

The Week in Film: A defanged "Fame," a snubbed Pedro and the latest trailers

25 September 2009 9:46 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

After watching the "gay exorcism" kid on Tyra, aren't you ready to turn off the TV and see what's going on at the movies? Heaven knows, I am!

The week's big opener is, of course, the remake of Fame, featuring a cast of talented youngsters that's way more shiny, happy and generally well-scrubbed than their grittier 1980 counterparts.

That would be Ok if this new movie were a tenth as engaging or well-written as the first one, but alas, it ain't. Even the few standout musical numbers aren't rousing enough to put over the rest of this lead balloon. (Read AfterElton.com's review here.)

That we've gone from the New York City High School of Performing Arts apparently having but one gay student (yeah, right) in '80 to one exceedingly gay-vague dancer boy doesn't feel like all that much progress, either.

And how can you put Kelsey Grammer and Bebe Neuwirth, »

Cole Turned To Comedy For St. Trinian's

21 September 2009 12:16 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

British actress/model Lily Cole embraced her turn in school comedy St. Trinian's - because it allowed her to poke fun at herself.

The 21 year old, who is currently studying at the U.K.'s prestigious Cambridge University, played geeky Polly in the 2007 movie.

But Cole refused to take her stint in the film too seriously - admitting she used her role to mirror her own studious lifestyle.

She says, "It was fun. There wasn't really much pressure. I didn't really take it very seriously. I wasn't really committed to the character. I like the idea of being a model and playing a geek. I quite liked taking the p**s out of the fact I do study a lot. It was just a bit sardonic." »

St. Trinian's Clips: Russell Brand Smokes Tampons

Colin Firth Lifts Up Ben Barnes' Spirit in New 'Dorian Gray' Clip

3 September 2009 1:44 AM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

"Dorian Gray" is less than a week away from its theatrical release in the U.K., and a brand new clip from the horror thriller has been found. The clip features two of the leading men, Colin Firth's Lord Henry Wotton and Ben Barnes' Dorian Gray, and focuses on the scene wherein Wotton shows Gray that there are plenty of fish in the sea.

Dorian Gray is a wealthy but naive and irresistible young man. When he agreed to have his portrait painted by Basil Hallward, he wishes that he could remain as beautiful, youthful, and alluring as the man he sees in the portrait. Little does he know, his wish will come true. Befriending the decadent Lord Henry Wotton, he soon falls into a life of depravity and self-indulgence.

As he is plunged deeper into debauched acts, he discovers that the face in the painting is aging grotesquely, »

Cole: 'Ledger Taught Me To Act'

31 August 2009 6:31 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Lily Cole owes her acting career to the late Heath Ledger - because he taught her the tricks of the trade while they were filming The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassus.

The model landed a small role in 2007's St. Trinian's movie and couldn't believe it when she was hired for Terry Gilliam's fantasy epic, opposite Ledger and Christopher Plummer.

She admits she was nervous about taking on such a prominent part in the movie, but found Ledger, who died mid-way through the shoot, to be a great friend and mentor.

She says, "He definitely helped me. From the beginning, he understood that I would be overwhelmed and scared by the size of the project. He encouraged me and said he was really proud of me, constantly fed me support."

Cole reveals she came close to giving up on the film when Ledger was found dead of a prescription drug overdose in January 2008 - a tragedy that halted the shoot.

His role was taken on by three other actors - Jude Law, Colin Farrell and Johnny Depp.

She adds, "Everyone loved Heath. For everyone who knew him, (his death) was devastating. The practicalities of continuing the production were difficult, but it seemed irrelevant.

"Johnny (Depp) slipped seamlessly into the role, but that didn't stop it being bizarre. I thought I was in at the deep end in the beginning - then look what happened!" »

St. Trinian's was a popular British film franchise of the '50's and '60's. Last year this girl's boarding school comedy got a remake (our review here), starring Colin Firth and Rupert Everett. The project, which was co-produced by Everett, is finally getting a limited U.S. release date, and we have an exclusive clip to share with you.

Check it out after the break!

Here's the setup: St Trinian's, the infamous school for 'young ladies' is once again facing dire financial crisis. The banks are threatening headmistress Camilla Fritton (Everett in drag) with closure. Her unorthodox doctrine of free expression and self empowerment is also under threat from new Education Minister Geoffrey Thwaits (Colin Firth), an old flame of Camilla's who is determined to bring discipline and order to the anarchic school.

Dorian Gray Trailer Starring Ben Barnes

28 July 2009 6:16 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

The tale of Dorian Gray is one that has been told many times over the years and in many different variations. The character comes from a Victorian Era novel written by Oscar Wilde called The Picture of Dorian Gray, about a handsome young man who sells his soul so that he may never lose his good looks. He indulges in sex, drugs and murder but with each act, a painting of him changes to reflect a disfigurement of some sort, revealing his hidden secret. There is new take on the story directed by Oliver Parker (The Importance of Being Earnest, St. Trinian's, Othello), that stars Prince Caspian himself, Ben Barnes, along with Colin Firth and Rachel Hurd-Wood. An international trailer has arrived online and while the music is a bit over the top, the Victorian Era setting and lush cinematography by Roger Pratt (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, »
