Bowing Down to Paul Bettany

3 hours ago | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

British actor Paul Bettany has the dashing looks and commanding presence of a leading man, but his filmography bolsters the case that he's not a creature of vanity or easy paychecks. Whether comparing his drunken Chaucer in "A Knight's Tale" to his ruthless thug in "Gangster No. 1," or his hypocritical do-gooder in Lars von Trier's arthouse masterpiece "Dogville" to his self-flagellating albino monk in a splashy blockbuster like "The Da Vinci Code," Bettany continually proves himself an intelligent and versatile performer who's passionate about new career challenges.

In director Jean-Marc Vallée's luxurious new biopic "The Young Victoria," Bettany co-stars as Lord Melbourne, a Prime Minister who became the 18-year-old, freshly ascended Queen Victoria's self-serving political tutor. Set in 1837, the film portraitizes Victoria (Emily Blunt) as we haven't seen her: a progressive-minded, spirited beauty in the early days of her reign and her courtship with Prince Albert »

Boos! & Whoop-doos!: 12 Months of Toilet Plunkers and Dumpster Diamonds!

15 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The End of 2009? Whoop-doo! This year has been one hellatious shit storm from the get-go. Pregnant ladies and babies, The Great Depression Part II, pig flu, more than a handful of horrible shootings, a balloon boy, Tiger's indiscretions, and our first black president. Not to mention more dead celebrities than I can shake a stick at. Every time I turned around, some other atrocious calamity was happening right before my eyes. Making 2009 one of the most interesting years of this entire decade. According to Michael Ruppert in his film Collapse its only going to get worse before it gets better. Yes, the Teens are going to see more than half of your friends and family dead. Take account of the folks around you. By the time 2020 rears its ugly head, most of these people will be gone. Turned to dust and painful memories. My advice to you this coming New Year? »

Emily Blunt Failed to Secure Her Double Satellite Awards Noms

21 December 2009 7:45 PM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Emily Blunt has impressed critics with her performance on both "The Young Victoria" and "Sunshine Cleaning", leading to her being nominated for two 2009 Satellite Awards titles. When the winners of the awards were announced however, it was unraveled that she has lost to Shohreh Aghdashloo and Mo'Nique.

On Monday, December 21, the International Press Academy made public Shohreh Aghdashloo bested Blunt in the category for Best Actress in Drama, and Mo'Nique stole her chance at securing Best Supporting Actress title. While she failed to add her award collection, her co-star in "The Devil Wears Prada" Meryl Streep took home Best Actress in Comedy/Musical honor for her performance in "Julie & Julia".

The 26-year-old was not the only double-nominated actress who walked away with no kudo. Her fellow competitor Penelope Cruz has to admit defeat as well. Nonetheless, both of Cruz' movies nailed at least one award. "Broken Embraces" was in tie »

Emily Blunt on true love and commitment. Are you listening, John Krasinski?

21 December 2009 1:24 PM, PST | Zap2It - The Dish Rag | See recent Zap2It - The Dish Rag news »

The Dish Rag got a chance to chat with Emily Blunt about her Golden Globe-nominated role in yet another amazing film about a British female monarch, "The Young Victoria."

We wanted her take on where the teenage monarch's inner strength came from as well  as the touching -- yet not widely known in the Us -- story of her devotion to her husband Prince Albert

Fittingly, Emily is engaged to be married to "The Office" star John Krasinski. And the night before we met, she'd appeared on Craig Ferguson's show, which she says started off with him talking about her breasts.

Afterwards we found out that it was the Scottish talk show host who actually advised John to "lock it down" and propose to her. Seems he and John were sitting next to each other on a plane flight and talked for the whole 10 hours about marriage.

Box Office Report, Avatar is King

20 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

Dude here again. Only two more box office reports left for 2009, can you believe it? What a crazy year it's been, from the Mall Cop to the New Moon, and everything in between. It certainly has been a roller coaster ride, full of terrible movies making far too much money, while more deserving films got swept under the rug. It's all part of this ridiculous game that gets played out every week. A game which I bet on every week in Vegas, hoping to make a fraction of the Transformers 2 gross.

To date, I haven't made a dime, mostly because I insisted on betting obscene amounts on movies like Ninja Assassin.

This weekend, James Cameron came around to change everyone's game. Did he succeed? Let's go to the numbers, shall we? (All in millions, remember, and these are the studio estimates. The actuals will be available on Monday).

1. Avatar (Fox) $73.0, 3452 screens, »

Box Office Beat Down: Avatar Makes an Out-of-this-world $73 Million

20 December 2009 6:52 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Weekend Box Office 1) Avatar - $73 million 2) The Princess and the Frog - $12.2 3) The Blind Side - $10 million 4) Did You Hear About The Morgans? - $7 million 5) The Twilight Saga: New Moon - $4.3 million 6) Invictus - $4.1 million 7) Disney's a Christmas Carol - $3.4 million 8) Up In The Air - 3.1 million 9) Brothers - $2.6 million 10) Old Dogs - $ 2.2 million Well, to nobody's real surprise James Cameron's 3D outer-space epic Avatar was the number one film at the box office this weekend in its opening week. Avatar, which is the director's first movie since his multiple Oscar winning film, Titanic, was released in 3,452 theaters and averaged $21,147 per theater for a grand total of $73 million over the weekend, well on it's way to earning back its purported $200 million plus budget. Last week's number one film, Disney's animated film The Princess and the Frog fell back one spot this week by only earning $12.2 million. The film, which »

Box Office Report: 'Avatar' takes No. 1 with $73 million

20 December 2009 9:38 AM, PST | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »

After months of breathless buzz, speculation, and doubt, James Cameron's Avatar finally arrived in movie theaters nationwide, and its box office prognosis definitely isn't blue. The 3-D sci-fi epic landed at number one with an estimated $73 million, according to Hollywood.com Box Office. The number is certainly on the lower end of expectations for the long-anticipated film, but considering that much of the east coast was buried under record snowfall for most of the weekend, it remains an unambiguously solid opening -- the best 3-D debut ever and the second-best December debut behind I Am Legend. Also unambiguous: The film's rock-solid "A" CinemaScore rating, »

"Avatar" Scores $73M Opening Weekend

20 December 2009 9:36 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

James Cameron's sci-fi epic "Avatar" opened along expected lines, pulling in an estimated $73 million for its opening weekend. The number is the sixth highest opening of the year, but was hampered by severe winter storms in the north-east which kept many people indoors.

Unlike say 'New Moon' which burned off more than half its audience in its $142m record-shattering opening weekend, the big question here is longevity as "Avatar" is relying on repeat and long term business both in the Us and globally over the generally quiet first few months of 2010 to pull in audiences.

A blockbuster with its kind of positive critical notices generally earns between three to four times its opening weekend, putting Avatar's domestic gross at around $220-280 million assuming no drastic drop-off. That's a number Fox would be very happy with as internationally it's expected to earn at least that much again and likely a lot more. »

Review: ‘The Young Victoria’ is grounded by dull history

18 December 2009 2:12 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

How do you make an engaging film about a queen who lent her name to an era known primarily for stuffiness and repression? By adding a little blood and sex, and hoping for the best. At least, that’s the approach “The Young Victoria” tries, and the result is something akin to a tidy museum exhibit.

The Young Victoria” opens with a sad and lonely girl who has just discovered she’s the only legitimate heir of the House of Hanover, and the future queen of England. Some viewers will undoubtedly be startled by all the Germans running around Kensington Palace. The English had to go to central Europe for its monarchs, and this convoluted lineage hangs over Victoria, and occasionally makes for rough going as various princes and dukes vie for control of England and its queen.

Though she would later become synonymous with rules and suppression, this Victoria »

Review: The Young Victoria

18 December 2009 11:15 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

We know Queen Victoria as the stern, round-faced widow who ruled Britain -- the woman who became Queen at the age of 18 and reigned for an impressive 63 years. Peeling that image away, French-Canadian filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallee shows us a wholly different side of the Queen in The Young Victoria. Choosing to linger on Victoria's early years rife with isolation and manipulation, Vallee reveals the young woman who came to rise above her environment to become one of the most notable figures in the British monarchy. It's an angle that almost works beautifully, but ultimately falls victim to poor framing and the throes of dramatic romance.

Emily Blunt's Victoria rests at the center of a pulsing web of power struggles. Her mother (the Duchess of Kent, played by Miranda Richardson) is the puppet of her companion, Sir John Conroy (Mark Strong). Together, they struggle to keep control over the young girl, »

Sarah Ferguson says she and ex-husband Prince Andrew still don’t understand why they divorced. The Duchess of York revealed that she and Andrew were guilty of ‘not fighting’ for their love. New To Theatres This Weekend: Avatar, Did You Hear About the Morgans?, Crazy Heart

18 December 2009 6:33 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

I think we all know what this weekend's biggest theatrical release is. James Cameron's Avatar has finally arrived! Will it live up to the hype, and more importantly... will it make its money back? There isn't much competition. The only other major release this weekend is counter programming for the women out there who can't stand fantasy and sci-fi: the Sarah Jessica Parker / Hugh Grant rom-com Did You Hear About The Morgans? Crazy Heart opens to critical acclaim on just a few screens, and the Rob Marshall musical Nine is in limited release this weekend before expanding on Christmas. Movie Review: The Young Victoria

Dec 18, 2009

The Young Victoria is a well-intentioned film with a talented enough cast and reasonably strong production value that still never quite comes together as anything truly memorable. It’s a film with many admirable individual parts that form a surprisingly forgettable whole. Despite stealing most of the films she's appeared in to date, star Emily Blunt is horrendously miscast and too much of The Young Victoria feels like it’s merely going through the motions, as if everyone has been tasked with providing a requisite holiday season period piece and that's what they’re going ...Read more at MovieRetriever.com »

Emily Blunt is the Girl Who Would Be Queen in ‘The Young Victoria’

18 December 2009 6:03 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – One of the functions of royalty seems to be an expected adoration from the peasants. Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend and Paul Bettany offer their interpretation on a monarch’s origins with “The Young Victoria.”

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Emily Blunt is Queen Victoria, who ruled the British Isles from 1837 to 1901. This narrative is about her younger days, when a swarthy rake named Albert (Rupert Friend) wooed the young Vicky and would eventually become her husband. In the meantime, the political machinations threaten to undermine her fledging reign, and the factors of family and background advisers weigh into that equation.

This is the young Victoria as both a poor little rich girl and harbinger of circumstances. She is lonely in the vast caverns of the opulent palaces, and must face the propriety of her eventual rise to the throne. As a teenager, she is shown rejecting the policies of a political enemy, establishing »

Arterton Swaps Hollywood For London Stage

18 December 2009 4:21 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Former Bond girl Gemma Arterton is returning to her theatre roots with a role on the West End stage.

The British actress, best known for her role in 007 movie Quantum of Solace, began her career with an appearance in Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost in London in 2007, just months before she won her first big screen role in St Trinian's.

And now the 23 year old is set to return to the theatre in The Little Dog Laughed, a satire about Hollywood, alongside The Young Victoria star Rupert Friend.

Arterton says, "There were many reasons for doing this play, but one of them was, 'Oh I've just done these Hollywood movies - and now I can do a play about some aspects of Hollywood and some of the things I've seen.' I've had a taste of it (fame) and I don't want it. I would rather do a play in England, thank you very much."

The Little Dog Laughed will begin previews on 8 January. »

This Weekend at the Movies: December 18, 2009

18 December 2009 3:51 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The main film this weekend is Avatar and that's obvious, but there are a few films opening in limited release to begin discussing as they will be expanding further in the coming weeks. Let's get to it.

Avatar It's the talk of the Internet and I am anxiously awaiting box-office returns. I hope this film will be a big hit because it's a lot of fun. Unfortunately I had to skip a second screening of it last night to finish up writing this weekend's reviews or I would be able to say I've seen it twice. I expect most of the regular movie fans that frequent film sites such as RopeofSilicon.com will be sure to check this one out this weekend and I can't wait to hear what everyone thinks.

This film is rated PG-13 for intense epic battle sequences and warfare, sensuality, language and some smoking. Click Here »

Movie Review: The Young Victoria (2009)

Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend in The Young Victoria

Photo: Apparition The Young Victoria is an excellent film, but it's missing a conclusion. The script penned by Julian Fellowes ends just when it seems it should be getting to the final act of the story of the up-and-down first years of Queen Victoria's rule. Fellowes gets us over a hill only to feed us text to take us down the other side. It's like investing in the stock market and watching your stock climb only to have it earn you hundreds instead of thousands when you cash out. Sure, you're a little richer, but the promise was much greater than the ultimate payoff.

For as melancholy as the film opens, The Young Victoria is actually quite the entertaining royal period piece as it introduces us to 17-year-old Princess Victoria (Emily Blunt) describing her "palace as a prison" while she sits in waiting. »

Movie Review - 'The Young Victoria'

18 December 2009 12:52 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

The Young Victoria

Starring Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend, and Paul Bettany

Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée

Rated PG

It's not exactly true that every year about this time, a British costume drama arrives in theaters pushing for Oscar glory. It's not exactly untrue, either. Last year it was Keira Knightley's The Duchess, and the year before that it was Knightley's Atonement and Cate Blanchett's sequel to Elizabeth.

So, at the very least, we're getting our fair share of this sort of thing, which brings us to The Young Victoria, a bio-pic of the longest tenured British royal. Victoria reigned for almost 65 years and is certainly worth a movie, probably a better one, even.

It isn't that The Young Victoria is a bad film, just indifferent. It is easy to look at, of course, following the blueprint established over recent years. It features a nice, mostly convincing performance by Emily Blunt. »

The Young Victoria at the Top of Its Game

17 December 2009 11:40 PM, PST | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

There.s no genre of movie I dread more than British period pieces. I just don.t have any interest in that world. It looks really boring to sit in parlors wearing frilly costumes, and the movies in this genre do nothing to dispel my prejudice. At best, I can acknowledge that The Young Victoria is at the top of this game. It.s just not for me.

Review: The Young Victoria

There are lots of scenes sitting around in parlors wearing frilly gowns. I do feel for her that she wasn.t allowed to read. That would have been my only form of entertainment in an age before movies. You.d think that following Victoria.s youth would make it a little more relatable, since there are universal teen concerns, but it.s still a lot of formalities that lose me. »
