Sam Mendes is currently in negotiations with Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli (Eon), to direct the 23rd James Bond picture once again starring Daniel Craig that is currently moving right along regardless of MGM's (Bond's Parent Company) current For Sale sign.
The production could begin as early as June, for a theatrical release slated in 2011. 44 year-old Mendes already boasts an eclectic career catalog of drama and comedy from American Beauty, Revolutionary Road, Road To Perdition, and Away We Go...but Bond? With the new direction of gritty fast passed action and sleek modern editing, will Mendes be able to capture those elements and meld them with what he's already good at? I'm really intrigued by this selection of director and look forward to see how it all pans out.

British filmmaker Sam Mendes can offer more than a quantum of solace to Bond fans who were dismayed by yesterday's report that the next 007 outing is on hold.
It was claimed Bond 23 was on ice - and, according to some, in jeopardy - because of the sale of debt-crippled studio MGM.
But there's since been some swift movement to make it clear the iconic franchise is not under threat.
The Hollywood Reporter says Mendes is in talks to direct the next Bond movie, which is being fast-tracked despite the sale of MGM; production could begin as early as June with a release late in 2011.
Mendes, born in Reading and married to Kate Winslet, previously directed American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Jarhead, Revolutionary Road and last year's road-trip comedy Away We Go. Sam Mendes's Bond 23 will probably not depict the superspy having a mid-life crisis in suburbia. Instead, expect the usual formula
If you've ever wondered what Moonraker might have looked like had it been directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky, or what Robert Bresson would have made of Diamonds Are Forever, then a roundabout answer may just be in the offing. Sam Mendes, the classy, respectable Oscar-winner behind the likes of American Beauty and Revolutionary Road, is reportedly "in negotiations" to direct Bond 23, the latest instalment in the 007 franchise.
A swift review of the Mendes back catalogue raises some tantalising prospects. Will Bond suffer a tragicomic mid-life crisis in suburbia, or perhaps steer his Aston Martin off on a harum-scarum road trip in search of the perfect place to raise a family? Recently, news was traveling around the Internets that the new ‘Bond’ film was being put on hold due to the financial woes of MGM, there is now news that Sam Mendes – the director of American Beauty, Road to Perdition, and Revolutionary Road – is signing up to direct the still untitled movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is now being fast tracked, despite the issues with the movie studio.
Sam Mendes, whose closest action film effort has to be either Jarhead, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, and Road to Perdition, starring Tom Hanks and current ‘James Bond’ Daniel Craig, has been a celebrated director since his debut with 1999’s American Beauty. Bond 23, which is being written by Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon) and ‘Bond’ series writers, Neil Purvis and Robert Wade is currently scheduled for filming sometime this year, with a hopeful release date of 2011.

Despite the fact that no firm schedule has been put in place due to the coming sale of MGM and the lack of a finished script, the producers of the James Bond franchise aren't stopping the process of putting all the other pieces in place so that things are ready to go.
According to reports, one of the major pieces has indeed been set. Sam Mendes (director of such films as "American Beauty", "Jarhead", "Road To Perdition", "Revolutionary Road" and last year's "Away We Go") has been tapped to helm the next installment of the Bond franchise.
Not known for action, Mendes brings an amazing sense of paced storytelling and character depth that will add much to the next Bond film.

The Oscar-winning British film-maker Sam Mendes is in talks to direct the next instalment in the James Bond series, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The 23rd 007 film may go into production as early as June, with the aim of a 2011 release.
The project would be Mendes's first proper action film – the director is best known for taut relationship dramas such as his 1999 debut American Beauty, for which he won the Oscars for best film and best director, and last year's Revolutionary Road. However, he has dabbled in more high-octane fare before: on the 2005 Gulf war tale Jarhead, as well as the 2002 gangster flick Road to Perdition.

British helmer Sam Mendes ("Revolutionary Road," "Jarhead") is apparently in negotiations to direct the 23rd installment of the James Bond franchise says The Hollywood Reporter.
The report comes despite news yesterday of potential delays due to the possible sale of MGM. Even with the studio going on the block, today's news indicates shooting could kick off as early as mid-Summer but MGM has yet to confirm anything.
What is official is that regular Bond writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are still working on the script along with "Frost/Nixon" scribe Peter Morgan. As usual Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are producing while Daniel Craig will reprise his role as 007. Craig and Mendes previously worked together on 2002's "Road to Perdition".

Just after press reports were released indicating that Eon Productions was holding off plans to develop the next James Bond film due to financial difficulties at MGM, The Hollywood Reporter says that Sam Mendes will direct the new film and that production could start as early as this summer. Out of the negative news of MGM financial issues and production delays for the 23rd installment of the James Bond film franchise in recent months, comes a ray of light in the form of what may be very talented Oscar-winning director helming the next Bond movie, tentatively titled Bond 23.
The Heat Vision blog is reporting that British-born director Sam Mendes is in negotiations to direct the next James Bond film and sequel to last year’s Quantum of Solace.
Sam Mendes has a very impressive resume which includes critically-acclaimed hits such as American Beauty, Road to Perdition and Revolutionary Road. Sam Mendes is close to direct his first action movie project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the British filmmaker is in negotiations to serve behind the lens for the next installment of James Bond film franchise, "Bond 23".
Though MGM is now on sale, the site reported that "production is being fast-tracked and could begin as early as June with an eye toward a 2011 release." Moreover, the company has denied rumors that the movie is on hold, claiming scripting is still underway.

Shortly after word hit yesterday that the next James Bond film was possibly being delayed due to financial problems, The Hollywood Reporter now tells us that Sam Mendes is in talks to helm the 23rd James Bond film. MGM has announced (via The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog) that Oscar winning director Sam Mendes is in negotiations to direct the upcoming 23rd James Bond movie.
The site reports production is being fast-tracked and could begin as early as June with an eye toward a 2011 release. Writers Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Peter Morgan, and producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are still attached in their respective roles.
Mendes’ previous action movies include “Jarhead” and “The Road To Perdition”, he has also directed acclaimed movies “Away We Go” (grossed $10 million domestically last summer), “Revolutionary Road” and “American Beauty”, for which he won an Oscar.
The previous Bond movie, 2008’s “Quantum Of Solace” was directed by Marc Forster and grossed $586 million worldwide.
Daniel Craig will reprise his role as 007.

In a surprise move by MGM, Sam Mendes is in discussions to direct the next untitled James Bond movie currently being referred to as simply Bond 23.
The announcement, via THR’s Heat Vision Blog, refutes claims that the 23rd James Bond movie is on hold due to the sale of MGM. In fact, production is on the “fast track” and could begin as soon as June 2010 for release sometime in 2011 (my guess is November, where they’ve had recent success).
Update: Nikki Finke learned that MGM’s financial situation is playing a factor in officially signing Mendes. Hiring a director to Bond would “trigger a payment from MGM,” which is nearly bankrupt at the moment, so he’s being brought in as a “consultant” for now with the first shot at directing once the script is complete.

Just yesterday we reported that MGM’s ongoing bidding war had indefinitely delayed the 23rd entry in the James Bond film franchise. But today … the franchise gets a shot in the arm with perhaps the best news since Martin Campbell’s return with Casino Royale?
It seems that Away We Go and Revolutionary Road director Sam Mendes is currently in talks to direct Bond 23. While Mendes hasn’t really shown off his action chops (unless you count Road to Perdition), he’s certainly capable of delivering a meaningful and poignant film. With the current and down-to-earth 007 track in mind, Mendes’ direction would be an inspired choice.
It’s unknown what impact the MGM sale will have on Mendes’ possible involvement, but in my opinion, I hope it works out in Mendes’ favor. While many will say that they should pass by another Marc Forster-eque director in favor of

The received wisdom within the James Bond camp has always been to avoid 'name" directors, whose previous form and the attendant expectations might overshadow the basic nuts and bolts business of the guy with the Walther Ppk and the dry martinis. But that rule may be about to be bent, as reports are coming in that Sam Mendes is in talks to direct the 23rd Bond movie.Mendes, you'll need no reminding, is the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind the dramatic likes of American Beauty, Revolutionary Road and last year's thoroughly wonderful Away We Go, and is not known for his action chops.
