'Wild Caribbean' is a wonderful documentary in its own right and if wanting to know more about the wildlife and such of the Caribbean this is the documentary to see. It does deserve much more credit and exposure, which is not down to its quality at all but because it's overshadowed by documentaries that have more marketing, are more ground-breaking, have garnered a lot of popularity and are narrated/presented by people more famous.
"Secret Shores" is more than an enormously satisfying last episode and makes one wish really that the series lasted longer. With the previous three episodes "Treasure Islands", "Reefs and Wrecks" and "Hurricane Hell", "Secret Shores" had a lot to live up and does so brilliantly, put it on the same level and all four episodes equal to each other in quality. They all were well made, had content worth caring for and having a lot of it that was informative and delivered well. Though the most illuminating perhaps was "Hurricane Hell", due to having a subject with the least familiarity with, though all four episodes have a good mix of the familiar and not so familiar which is good for a documentary.
It's again a beautifully filmed episode, with the Bocas del Toro islands being especially well captured. It was great too seeing corals being filmed quite intimately. The scenery is quite majestic but like the best documentaries they are more unforgiving than one thinks, like flooded caves and mangrove swamps. The wildlife are equally captured well. The music here is a remarkably good fit, throughout it not only complements the visuals but enhances them and there is an authentic flavour to it.
All the information presented is engaging, making one listen to every word and see every captivating image. There was a good mix of the familiar (whale sharks, plankton, sloths) and the not so familiar (there is more of that here in "Secret Shores", examples being American crocodiles, the inhabitants of the Pennisula, capybara). As well as the adorable (the chicks of the frigatebirds, howler monkeys) and the dangerous (whale sharks, American crocodiles).
Narration is delivered with sincerity and the episode even manages to bring some humanity in.
Overall, fabulous finish. 10/10
