James Cameron's sci-fi blockbuster Avatar has regained its place at the top of the UK box office. The movie, which stars Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver and Zoe Saldana, fell to second place last week following the release of the Alvin And The Chipmunks sequel. However, Avatar's £5 million gross - a £2 million rise from last week - is enough to beat closest rival Sherlock Holmes to the top spot. Elsewhere, romantic comedy Did You Hear About The Morgans? opens at number four, while Nine switches places with St Trinian's 2 to reach five. Animation (more) »

In the age where everything gets adapted into a movie, why not try Lego toys. That's Universal Studios Home Entertainment's thinking, as they'll release this concept on it's popular DVD platform. Although, the studio follows the stigma of turning a popular toy line into a movie, one wonders why this isn't getting the popular 3-D and/or animated treatment on the big screen. Surely, a Lego movie can draw audiences in right? There's evidence showing plenty of other garbage that can do it. Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel ring a bell? How about G-force?
Anyways, here's the scoop on the Lego movie:
Children’s favorite Lego® toys come to life in the entertaining and action-packed adventure, Lego: The Adventures of Clutch Powers, an all-new, feature-length movie coming to DVD on February 23, 2010 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. Filled with fun, action and laughs, this »

James Cameron's 3D epic beat Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks this holiday, and gave Sam Taylor-Wood's Nowhere Boy and Rob Marshall's Nine a positive whipping
The winner
Given Avatar's epic duration and the limited number of 3D screens in the UK, the film's box office performance was always likely to be more long haul than quick burn. But takings of £5.94m on its third weekend go far beyond expectations. For comparison, third-weekend takings on Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – by some distance, 2009's biggest UK box office hit – were £2.92m. After 17 days on release, Avatar has taken a nifty £32.82m, but it's the film's earnings potential, rather than sums grossed so far, that have got the industry excited. The 17-day figure is hardly record-breaking, but much more significant is that Avatar has hardly dipped from its opening weekend of £6.67m; until it starts showing declines, »

Ever since I noticed a curious lack of Zachary Levi in the trailers for Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, I've wanted to know what he does in the movie. What are they trying to hide? After seeing it last weekend (at a theater without ticket machines, so I had to actually speak the movie's title to a human) mystery solved. Here, a brief look: • After Dave (Jason Lee) becomes hospital-bound in France following an accident at a Chipmunks charity concert, the boys are shipped back to the States to stay with Dave's Aunt Jackie (Kathryn Joosten). Propelled by enthusiastic word of mouth and repeat business unrivaled since Titanic, Avatar crossed the $1-billion mark in just its third week at the worldwide box office. Over the New Year's weekend, it brought in an estimated $68.3 million at the domestic box office to bring its North American total to $352.11 million after 17 days. IMAX screenings accounted for $66.4 million of that total, easily setting a record for the ultra-widescreen format. The movie already ranks No. 4 on the list of all-time box-office champs, behind Titanic ($1.84 billion), Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($1.12 billion, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.07 billion). Even with Avatar out of the picture, the box office performed remarkably well. In its second weekend, Warner Bros.' Sherlock Holmes shot up $38.39 million and now boasts a gross of $140.68 million. Scampering close behind was Alvin and the Chipmunks with an impressive $36.6 million, bringing its three-week total to $157.35 million. Universal's romantic comedy It's Complicated deserved honorable mention as it took in $18.7 million, down just 15 percent from last weekend. Its two-week total comes to $59.1 million. »

#1 "Avatar" ($68.3 million)
#2 "Sherlock Holmes" ($38.4 million)

#4 "It's Complicated" ($18.7 million)

The third time isn't just the charm for "Avatar" — it marks yet another notch in the science-fiction epic's ever-increasing success story.
James Cameron's latest film once again topped the box office for its third consecutive weekend with a $68.3 million intake, a mere 9.7 percent drop from last weekend's $75.6 million. "Avatar" now holds the record for highest-grossing second and third weekends for a non-sequel, though that isn't the film's only cause for celebration. To date, "Avatar's" domestic tally is priced at $352.1 million, which combines with foreign numbers for a worldwide total of $1.022 billion.

We told you last week that 2009 toppled the all-time annual box office record, becoming the first year to eclipse $10 billion. But that was before the last week of the year, one that included incredible returns for Avatar and solid follow-ups for Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks. So the grand total for the domestic box office was $10.61 billion, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and that's almost a full billion bucks more than 2008.
Avatar, Transformers, Harry Potter, Star Trek, and Up were all huge successes, roughly to their expected goals prior to their release. But 2009 was prodded along by surprise hits, too, like The Hangover, The Blind Side, and Taken, to name just a few. They helped the year slough off some slower-than-expected returns on blockbusters that weren't, like Terminator Salvation and Wolverine.

Note: These are early box office estimates. Final tallies may differ slightly.
It was a big weekend for box office numbers, as the first weekend of 2010 saw seven of the top ten earners crack the $10 million mark. With virtually no shifts in positioning, Avatar ($68 million, $350 million three week total), Sherlock Holmes ($38 million, $140 million two week total), and Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel ($36 million, $157 million two week total) held firm at first, second and third place respectively.
The Princess And The Frog also held steady at number seven, drawing another $10 million to it's now $86 million total (over the course of six weeks).
Unfortunately there wasn't much horror to be found lingering in the top 10. If you consider The Twilight Saga: New Moon horror, you can at least find some solace in the film's 11th place ranking. After adding another $3 million plus to it's box office earnings New Moon breaks $285 million seven weeks after release. »

James Cameron's Avatar has topped the Australian box office for the third week running. The science fiction epic's $$9.6 million haul is enough to see off competition from Sherlock Holmes and Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel, with both movies holding on to their places at number two and three respectively. Old Dogs and The Lovely Bones round out the top five, while new releases Did You Hear About The Morgans?, The Princess And The Frog and Fantastic Mr Fox debut in the top (more) »

This New Year's weekend was the biggest-grossing ever, fueled by the highest gross ever posted by a single movie on the holiday. Easing ten percent, Avatar generated a whopping estimated $68.3 million, claiming the New Year's record from Meet the Fockers' $41.7 million. More importantly, it delivered the highest-grossing third weekend ever, surpassing the first Spider-Man's $45 million, and it raced past the $350 million mark in just 17 days, second only to The Dark Knight's two-week sprint.
Among 2009 releases, Avatar already ranks second to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' $402.1 million, which it will soon eclipse. Avatar's performance is so monumental that picture has shot up to the 15th spot on the all time chart and it's likely to give The Dark Knight and Titanic a run for their money. Avatar's costlier 3D tickets help its cause but do not diminish its achievements, and it has blown the roof off the format's previous highs. »

"Avatar" reaches $1 billion worldwide in 17 days; "Alvin and the Chipmunks" still going strong overseas
James Cameron's "Avatar" is on its way to the very top of the list of all-time top-grossing films worldwide. Fox's sci-fi action adventure reached a stunning $670.2 million overseas after weekend earnings totaling $133.5 million in 110 territories, which explains why the film has now reached a global cume of $1.02 billion.
Cameron's "Titanic" is still leading the pack with $1.84 billion, followed by "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" and "The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." A lot of folks out there are pretty confident "Avatar" will soon knock some of them out. Given its current results, that may indeed be possible.
Following in second place on the international circuit this weekend was "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," which earned $32 million for an overseas total gross of $99.1 million. At No. 3, "Black Lightning" opened with $9.7 million. »

Avatar is now the fourth-highest grossing movie of all time.
20th Century Fox’s crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, passing 2008’s The Dark Knight ($1B) and gaining quickly on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($1.07B) and The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King ($1.12B). The astonishing feat was accomplished in just 17 days in theaters.
At the domestic box office, James Cameron’s epic repeated for a first place finish three consecutive weekends. Competing with no new openers and audiences hung over from New Year’s Eve, Avatar made an estimated $68.3 million (only a 10% drop). It set the record for the highest New Year’s Day (Friday) at $25.3M, which helped the 3-D movie blow by the $300 million mark in just 15 days. It’s current U.S. total sits at $352.1 million, the second largest for movies released in 2009 and the second fastest to the $350M milestone. »

There are now five movies in the history of cinema that have made more than $1 billion in worldwide grosses – and James Cameron has directed two of them.
After coming closer than it would have liked to getting edged out of the top spot last week, Avatar dropped only 10% from last week to earn $68.3 million and firmly held on to number one for the third week in a row, almost doubling that of Sherlock Holmes ($38.3 million).
Actually, the top films remained unchanged from last week with Alvin and the Chipmunks ($36.6 million), It’s Complicated ($18.7 million) and The Blind Side ($12.6 million) rounding out the top five.
But the big news this week is Avatar crossing $1 billion worldwide grosses. Only five films have made that much money ever at the box office: Titanic (1997), The Lotr: The Return of the King (2003), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006), The Dark Knight (2008) and now Avatar. »
