Jennifer Hudson continues to amaze. For starters, thanks to her role in Dreamgirls, she’s the only person to ever go from a reality TV show (American Idol) to winning an Academy Award (in her debut role no less). Now, despite being an actress with no leading roles to her credit and with her latest film, Fragments, being released straight-to-dvd, she has scored one of the best roles in Hollywood. Hudson will be portraying Winnie Mandela, the former wife of South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela, in the titular bio-pic, Winnie. For more on this project, hit the jump.
According to Variety, Winnie will start shooting on location in South Africa next May in Johannesburg, Cape Town and the Transkei and Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years behind bars. Directing will be Darrell J. Roodt, the South African director behind Yesterday, South Africa …

Kate Beckinsale has put the brake on the rumor of her returning to "Underworld 4". In a press conference for her upcoming thriller "Whiteout" on Friday, August 28, she told Collider she still did not know whether she would reprise her role as Selene in another "Underworld" film, insisting report "is just a rumor."
"God, three whole more!" Beckinsale stated when she was asked about report which said she has signed on to a new "Underworld" trilogy. She added, "I don't think my daughter needs to see my bottom in rubber for another ten years. But I don't know, I've heard they're talking about a 4th one, but I don't know if that's officially happening or it's that a rumor. As far as I'm concerned it's just a rumor."
Asked if she will do another "Underworld" movie, Beckinsale answered, "I don't know anything about a 4th Underworld. I don't know anything about that at this point. …

We know now that there will be a fourth Underworld movie, and we know it's going to be in 3-D, for reasons that - like the visual effects in the last two films - are unclear. But could Kate Beckinsale get back in the leather?
Bloody Disgusting has heard whispers that the lovely Selene will be the focus of the new movie, but stresses that the information is just at the rumor stage. Why would Beckinsale return to the franchise she left? Simple: The "Kate Beckinsale is a serious actress" stage of her career has not been met with a lot of positive attention. She did get a Critic's Choice nomination last year for Nothing But the Truth, but not too many people saw that or Winged Creatures, which is now called Fragments in its DVD release.
In short: This is Beckinsale's best gig. She'd get paid well to return, …

Fragments, while it does have fleeting glimmers of hope, is a film that never realizes its full potential. The marketing for the film suggests that it bears some similarity to Paul Haggis’ Academy Award winning film Crash. The similarities are merely superficial. An ensemble cast united by a tragic event is about as close as the two films get. Fragments, while making a few inlays into the festival circuit, never found theatrical release and is only available on DVD. The film is also listed under two titles: Winged Creatures (which is the name of the Roy Freirich novel on which the film is based) and Fragments.
I’d keep this one off your queue
Fragments tells the story of various characters who find themselves in a small town diner as a tragic and random event transpires. A lone gunman, for no specified reason, murders patrons before turning the gun on himself. …

After impressing in 2007's Bridge to Terabithia, Josh Hutcherson has navigated his teen years with aplomb. He can currently be seen in the ensemble drama Fragments (formerly Winged Creatures) opposite Dakota Fanning and Forest Whitaker, and he'll star in Paul Weitz's The Vampire's Assistant in October, but he's got two big roles ready for 2010: playing son to Annette Bening and Julianne Moore in Lisa Cholodenko's The Kids are All Right, and fighting off the Chinese in the remake of Red Dawn. We talked to the sixteen-year-old Hutcherson about cool names, the notorious Oakwood apartments, and his old co-star Kristen Stewart. …

Jul 30, 2009 Ensemble dramas about the ripple effect of tragedy and fate can be a tricky minefield of screenwriting clichés. They can lead to great rewards, but the risk for failure is also high. For every Magnolia or Short Cuts, there are several disastrous efforts that rarely see the light of day outside of the festival circuit. One such effort is just barely seeing the light of day as Fragments (formerly known as Winged Creatures on the festival circuit ... a much better name) is opening in New York today and Los Angeles next week with ...Read more at MovieRetriever.com …

"Act of God"
Following "Manufactured Landscapes," her compelling 2006 portrait of photographer Edward Burtynsky and the paradoxical beauty of his images of industry, Canadian documentary filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal turns her attention to one of nature's most dynamic phenomenon. Collecting a multitude of testimony from lightning strike survivors and witnesses, Baichwal explores a host of ideas and explanations for this awe-inspiring experience, from the miraculously divine to the maddeningly random.
Opens in Chicago.

It's been a roundabout sort of homecoming for Australian filmmaker Rowan Woods. The director, who made his name with the critically-praised local movies The Boys (1998) and Little Fish (2005), decamped to Los Angeles to shoot his first American feature, Winged Creatures --- together with an ensemble cast that includes Forest Whitaker, Jackie Earle Haley, Dakota Fanning, Kate Beckinsale, Guy Pearce, Jennifer Hudson and Josh Hutcherson. It's a dark, multi-narrative drama that examines post-traumatic stress and how it affects a group of characters who witness a violent shooting in a restaurant. Though the film has had a muted response in …

Another sleek new poster to feature today. This one is for an indie film called Winged Creatures from Australian filmmaker Rowan Woods. Peace Arch Entertainment recently retitled the film to just Fragments for its Us release, even though this poster is not from the Us. I wanted to feature it today because, although it's not the best film, the poster has a pretty cool design showing a spilled cup of coffee that turns into a bird. Simple, but effective, and well done in the visual context of the poster. Unfortunately, I had the chance to see this late last year, and it was terrible. But even so, this poster is worth checking out in full below. Winged Creatures is about a group of strangers in a small town who form a unique relationship with each other after surviving a random shooting at a California diner. We ran an early trailer …
