Notice I didn't say best movies -- that territory has been well covered by far more passionate list makers than I am. (By the way, do you agree with me that a devotion to ranking is primarily a male urge? Tell me three good reasons why I'm right or wrong. At any rate, I don't have the gene for it.)
As the first decade of the 21st century comes to a close, though, here's fodder for your New Year's Eve party: A list, in no particular order, of 10 movie developments from the past 10 years that have impressed, depressed, excited, upset,

The combination of Avatar, Sherlock Holmes, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and other solid titles as well as Christmas landing on a Friday led to the highest-grossing weekend ever. Overall business came in at around $270 million, up 34 percent over the same timeframe last year and surpassing the previous high of $260.5 million set on July 18-20, 2008, when The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia! debuted.
Living up to its hype as the event picture of the season, Avatar was monolithic with $75.6 million, down a mere two percent from its opening. Though boosted by the Christmas holiday, it nonetheless broke the record for highest-grossing second weekend ever, edging out The Dark Knight's $75.2 million. The sci-fi adventure's 3D sites accounted for a 3D-record-setting $57.9 million of the weekend, and the picture posted another rousing performance in IMAX, which contributed an estimated $8.8 million of the weekend gross. In ten days, its tally stands at a whopping $212.7 million,

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz have all to play for in Knight & Day

The title makes it sound like a bad 1980s BBC sitcom, but the this action comedy blockbuster, due out in summer 2010, is probably Cruise and Diaz's best chance to regain box-office cred
Take a look at any "most anticipated movies of 2010" list online and you'll see a familiar collection of sequels and remakes and adaptations. But there's one big summer movie that the list-makers seem to have ignored so far – the Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz action comedy Knight & Day.
This wouldn't have happened a few years ago. Earlier in the decade, the hype surrounding a high-kicking blockbuster starring Minority Report's Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz from Charlie's Angels would have been building since the moment it started filming. As it is, the past three days have seen a poster and a teaser trailer launched to almost no fanfare whatsoever.

The very first trailer for Knight and Day, the Cameron Diaz, Tom Cruise action movie that we showed you the poster for the other day is now online. With James Mangold (Walk the Line) directing the film, it looks to be a great action-comedy with both Cruise and Diaz looking like they’re having a good time.
Seeing these two actors together for the first time since Vanilla Sky, I’m reminded of the chemistry they had on-screen; and it’s fully evident again here. The trailer’s funny moments seem to be a continuation of Cruise not taking himself so seriously, much like in Tropic Thunder – which really helped to lighten the atmosphere around him, after all the Scientology and “Katie-gate” snafus.
Of course, the comedy meeting the action scenes make this seem like a perfect match for everyone involved. Diaz is showing her comedic side, such as she did in her hits,

Just the other day…or was it night? Anywho, just recently we brought you the poster for the action comedy Knight And Day, which awkwardly added an extra “weapon” to Ms. Diaz’s arsenal (check that out Here). Now we bring you the trailer for the film which, I must admit, is a lot of fun! The film looks to be in the same vain as Mr. And Mrs. Smith and features Tom Cruise in a Mission Impossible-esque role while tickling that funny bone he proved he had in Tropic Thunder.

20th Century Fox has released the first teaser trailer for the new Tom Cruise action/comedy Knight & Day. Directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line / 3:10 to Yuma / Girl, Interrupted), the film centers on a fugitive couple (played by Cruise and Cameron Diaz) on a "glamorous and sometimes deadly adventure where nothing and no one – even themselves – are what they seem. Amid shifting alliances and unexpected betrayals, they race across the globe, with their survival ultimately hinging on the battle of truth vs. trust." The film also feratures Maggie Grace, Peter Sarsgaard, Marc Blucas, Paul Dano, and Viola Davis.
While the comedy at moments falls flat (which is a shame, as I loved Cruise's appearance in Tropic Thunder) the Bourne-style action sequences might be enough to earn my $10. Watch the trailer now embedded after the jump. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

It had been a successful decade for the comic book movie, with that trend continuing into the latter half of the decade. Just as looked like the public demand for irradiated heroes looked to be diminishing, with lacklustre showings from the likes of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four, out came Iron Man. Coupled with a brilliant script and an excellent performance from Robert Downey Jr as the titular zillionaire industrialist/playboy/freedom fighter/all-round genius, the end result was something truly special. Downey’s career was also revitalised, earning him a role in Tropic Thunder (which would earn him an Oscar nomination). Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk took a similar approach, this time giving Edward Norton of Fight Club fame a shot at getting under the skin of the green goliath.
They set a tough act to follow, but followed they were by one Christopher Nolan. With the Batman

2008 was clearly the year of Robert Downey Jr. And why not? The man has gone through a lot of personal adversity (granted, most of which was his own doing), but managed to pick himself up to re-establish himself and his career. The year started for him with two smash hits, Iron Man and Tropic Thunder, and then went on to give a solid performance in "The Soloist".
Now, 2010 seems to be set for another huge year for Downey. On Christmas day, just over a week away, the new film "Sherlock Holmes" will open. Then to kick off the Summer movie season in May, Downey returns as Tony Starks in "Iron Man 2".
So as we enter this season of Downey, I thought I'd take a moment to look back at his films up to this point, and offer my personal list of his best performances. (Remember, this is a list of his best performances,

Gwyneth Paltrow Flirts With Robert Downey Jr. in 'Iron Man 2' Trailer

While "Iron Man 2" is generally an action movie, it will still offer sexual tension between its major characters. Through its first trailer, the movie exposes how Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts leaves Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark aka Iron Man yearning for more when Potts gives his helmet a smooch in answer to his request for a kiss.
The growing romance between the two is only a part of the trailer, though. The rest of the promo video displays more of the actions the movie has in store. Mickey Rourke's Whiplash cutting Stark's race car in half, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow knocking down men, and Don Cheadle's War Machine providing Iron Man with his aide are some of the scenes teased.
Scripted by "Tropic Thunder" co-scribbler Justin Theroux, "Iron Man 2" sees the return of director Jon Favreau to the helming seat behind Marvel's superhero.

The 2010 Golden Globe nominations have been very kind to Sandra Bullock. The 45-year-old actress has two hit films this year and was blessed with nods for both: Best Actress in a Drama ("The Blind Side") and Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical ("The Proposal").
"I am beyond stunned," Bullock said in a statement. "Just to be included in the company of these amazing women I have so admired thru the years, has left me slack jawed with awe. It is Truly an honor just to be nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press, and I will cherish this moment with all the artists I have worked with behind the scenes, who truly make me look good!"

Universal Pictures continues developing "Candy Land", from a screenplay by writer Etan "Tropic Thunder" Cohen for director Kevin "Enchanted" Lima, adapting the Hasbro board game. Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner will produce with executive producer Christopher Chase.
The original "Candy Land" game, designed in the 1940's by Eleanor Abbott, was purchased by the Milton Bradley Company (now owned by Hasbro).
Hasbro continues to produce several versions of the brand, marketing "Candy Land" puzzles, PC games and handheld electronic versions.
The game consists of a 'race', woven around a story line about finding the lost king of 'Candy Land'. The board itself is a winding, linear track made of 134 spaces, most of which are red, green, blue, yellow, orange or violet.
The remaining few spaces are locations such as 'Candy Cane Forest' and 'Gum Drop Mountain', with characters including 'King Candy', 'Queen Frostine' and 'Gramma Nutt'.

Our friends over at Latino Review have broken an exclusive saying that they have it from reliable sources that Spider-Man himself, Tobey Maguire, is in talks to star as Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson’s upcoming adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
Latino Review isn’t one to simply toss out some random rumor, either; those guys do their journalistic homework. In this case, they’ve linked together a nice string of circumstances and events, which all point to Maguire being on the short list of Hobbit candidates (see what I did there? ).
Alright, here’s the situation as presented by Latino Review. I’m going to take the extra-simplifying step of laying it out in bullet points for you:
Latino Review got a tip last month while Maguire was in NYC promoting his new film, Brothers, that the star had answered “Guillermo del Toro

It was exactly a year ago this week that the news of Jack Black's February 1st cameo on "The Office" broke and the web was abuzz with excitement over it. Well, apparently history is sort of repeating itself.
Sources tell Korbi TV about yet another scheduled Jack Black sitcom appearance, saying the "Tropic Thunder" actor has signed on to guest in a January episode of the Chevy Chase/Joel McHale comedy "Community."
"Community" -- which follows a manipulative, young lawyer (McHale) whose is disbarred and forced to
attend a local community college where he befriends a band of misfits -- has been gaining critical praise throughout the season.
It could, however, use a bit of a boost in ratings.
Thank you, Jack Black.
Black is not the only big name lending a hand. We're told another high profile film actor, best known for his comedy hits at the box office,
