Jayne Atkinson: Karen Hayes

Quotes

  • Karen Hayes : [while in her office]  so what's going on? It sounded urgent

Karen Hayes : You know I've interrogating reed Pollack? Tom's chief of staff after his arrest

Karen Hayes : [Sarcastically]  that must be pleasant

Peter Hock : Pollack's looking at a probable death sentence for his part in the attempted assassination of Wayne Palmer: out of desperation his offering up everything he knows hoping you'll show some "leniency"

Karen Hayes : What does that have to do with me?

Peter Hock : [Before taking out his laptop and playing a video file]  not just you, this involves your husband as well, take a look

Peter Hock : [after playing the video of Pollack's interrogation]  do me a favor and save me some time: is it true or not?

Karen Hayes : The facts are true but there's no "cover up" here. About two years ago, we apprehended Fayed as part of a FBI/CTU "border sweep." There wasn't enough evidence to hold him, he was one of many, and he "maybe" a "mid-level player"

Peter Hock : And that turned out to be wrong

Peter Hock : [Sitting down]  so why was it blue coded?

Karen Hayes : Every year thousands of suspects are arrested, if there isn't enough evidence to hold them, their released, and blue coded. That's just standard procedure, the only way to "guarantee" that no one becomes a threat is to hold them and deprive them of their rights and freedoms

Peter Hock : Alright then, if this was a "no fault", why did this carry so much with you twelve hours ago? Why did you resign? Rather than have this "come out"?

Karen Hayes : Come on, we were under attack, there was no way I was going to let this information touch the President or my husband. They needed to lead us through this crisis unimpeded

Peter Hock : Here we are: twelve hours later, Palmer's in a coma, the country's in shock over losing over thirteen thousand innocent lives, and all people are going to be asking is "who let this happen?"

Karen Hayes : Certainly not my husband, he has devoted to his life to this country

Peter Hock : This isn't "my call", but I think you know how this "works", someone's going to have to go down and the farther from the President, the better

Karen Hayes : So, what "exactly" are you saying?

Peter Hock : It's either going to be you or Bill. Bill would be my preference, his lower on the "food chain" but you'll do

  • Karen Hayes : I spoke with Bill and he "assures" me CTU has deployed all their resources to find Bauer

Vice President Noah Daniels : I don't want to near about their "assurances", they let Bauer steal the component: so their "assurances" means nothing

Tom Lennox : If I may sir, I could authorize ancillary agencies to join the search that would increase our chances of finding Bauer

Vice President Noah Daniels : Do it

Lisa Miller : [after Tom and Karen leave]  is there anything else you need from me?

Vice President Noah Daniels : Is there anything else I need from you? Let me think, I have the fate of the western world and the lives of millions of Americans hanging in the balance, I can't stop thinking about you

Lisa Miller : [while he hugs and kisses her, sarcastically]  I'm not sure this is appropriate behavior Mr. "acting President"

Vice President Noah Daniels : Well there's the phone: call the media and tell them the "acting President" is a "dirty old man"

Lisa Miller : [Before they kiss]  they already know

Vice President Noah Daniels : I would you to spend what's left of the night here with me

Lisa Miller : I'll go home and pick up a change of clothes

  • Bill Buchanan : [Over the phone]  I have a minute: you wanted to talk about "something?"

Karen Hayes : The DOJ investigator found out about Seattle, when you and Homeland had Fayed in custody

Bill Buchanan : "Found out"? It wasn't a secret: we did everything by the book, I can deal with DOJ

Karen Hayes : Yeah I know but the problem is they're out for blood. I can't let this "touch" me

Bill Buchanan : "Touch" you? What're you talking about? Why is this suddenly an issue? Are you concerned I might "implicate" you?

Karen Hayes : No, but obviously there's "guilt by association" here

Bill Buchanan : Their looking for a scapegoat

Karen Hayes : Yes, the pundits and the press are looking for "anything" to attack the Administration

Bill Buchanan : What're you saying?

Karen Hayes : I have to protect the White House and in order to do that I have to distance myself from you

Bill Buchanan : How are you going to do that? I'm your husband

Bill Buchanan : [after Karen doesn't respond]  you're asking me to resign?

Karen Hayes : No, I have to fire you

Bill Buchanan : Who's pressuring you?

Karen Hayes : This is the only way this can "work" and it has to happen immediately or I'll be viewed as complicit and my ability to stay on as National Security Advisor will be undermined

Bill Buchanan : Undermined? We're talking about the end of my career

Karen Hayes : You don't think I've thought this through?

    Bill Buchanan : No, I don't

Karen Hayes : You don't think that I don't know what this means to you?

Bill Buchanan : [Raises his voice]  no, I don't. Because the public will make "assumptions" that don't exist: thirteen thousand American lives lost, I had the man in custody who was responsible and I released him. It won't matter that I had no evidence to "hold" him

Karen Hayes : You know how this "works." One of us has to take the fall and it can't be me, I'm too close to the President

Bill Buchanan : I can't believe I'm hearing this: who is pressuring you? What're you not saying?

Karen Hayes : You have to trust me on this. We will get through this, I promise and I love you and that's all that should matter here

    Bill Buchanan : Is it?

Karen Hayes : [Before he hangs up]  yes
