- Thomas Lennox: The Constitution is a wonderful thing, Karen, but back in the days of the Founding Fathers, the weapon at hand was a single-shot musket. It took half a minute to load and fire. Fayed just killed 12,000 people in less time without even taking aim. I love the Constitution, but I won't be ducking behind it when the next nuke goes off.
- Thomas Lennox: I'd like you to tender your resignation, Karen.
- Karen Hayes: [laughs] My resignation; what are you smoking?
- President Wayne Palmer: [Addressing the country on television] although the crisis we face today is a grave and dire one, we will rise above it. This great nation of ours has been challenged like it never has before. This time, against this enemy armed with these weapons, we must rely on the strength and faith of every single American. And that faith is unshakeable: we must rise above our fears, above our bigotries, and stand our ground. Our goal is the defeat of the enemy and the preservation of our values. Now we've achieved that goal in the past, and so we should again. Thank you
- Karen Hayes: Now you're making policy "unilaterally", the President was absolutely clear about your proposals
- Thomas Lennox: I'm sorry, what is this about?
- Karen Hayes: [Reading from a piece of paper] "National Guard policing major cities, expanding detention space based on soft intel." You authorized these without Presidential consent
- Thomas Lennox: Now how many times do you think we're going to be going over this? I am taking "preparatory" steps to allow the President to act swiftly should he decide to act at all. Nobody is authorizing anything
- Karen Hayes: That's what you said about the detention facilities and yet those "preparatory measures" turned into a paramilitary operation
- Thomas Lennox: Well, however you chose to characterize it, the President agreed to all of these actions
- Karen Hayes: Your just distorting the facts: what is it? Is it you think I'm some kind of "bleeding heart liberal", who's preaching civil liberties? Is that it?
- Thomas Lennox: I'll tell you what I think: the Constitution is a wonderful thing but back in the days of the Founding Fathers, the weapon at hand was a single shot musket. It took half a minute to load and fire. Fayed just killed 12,000 people in less time without even taking aim. I love the Constitution, but I won't be "ducking" behind it when the next nuke goes off
- Karen Hayes: I'm a realist too and I am willing to do what it takes to protect this country
- Thomas Lennox: [Raises his voice] no, you are not
- Karen Hayes: But I am looking a little further down the road: these warrantless arrests and detention centers will cause irreparable damage to this country
- Thomas Lennox: [Irritated] you know something? Why don't you just hop a shuttle over to the Justice Department?
- Karen Hayes: You are using this crisis...
- Thomas Lennox: [Interrupts her] you don't belong in national security
- Karen Hayes: [Finishing her sentence before she was interrupted] to advance a very dangerous agenda and take advantage of Presidential power and I will not let you do it. And if you think you are going to wear me down, you are sadly mistaken
- Thomas Lennox: [Before leaving the room] actually, you're wearing me down
- Jack Bauer: [after taking a plastic bag off his head, torturing him for information] if you lie to me again, the bag goes back on: do you understand me? Start talking
- Graem Bauer: [while crying, referring to their father] he didn't want anyone to know where he went
- Jack Bauer: He didn't leave a number? In case of an emergency?
- Graem Bauer: No, you can't reach him: after the bomb was detonated, he told me he was cutting himself off
- Jack Bauer: I don't believe you. I think he told you where he was going
- Graem Bauer: No, it's the truth
- Jack Bauer: [Before putting the plastic bag back on but stops] fine
- Graem Bauer: [Confessing] alright, alright, he went to see a guy who works for us. His name's Darren McCarthy
- Jack Bauer: Why?
- Graem Bauer: It was my fault, I made a mess: dad's trying to clean it up
- Jack Bauer: What'd you mean?
- Graem Bauer: You were right, it's about the nukes. The connection you found between dad and Gredenko, had to do with a contract that was awarded to us
- Jack Bauer: Through the company?
- Graem Bauer: Yeah, it all went through BXJ
- Jack Bauer: [Sternly] what did an ex-Russian general have to do with the contract?
- Graem Bauer: It was his job to release the old nukes into the US for decommissioning. BXJ was hired to dismantle some of the smaller parts and recycle their cores to energy production: we do it all the time
- Jack Bauer: What happened?
- Graem Bauer: I hired McCarthy to oversee the job but I didn't check it out "carefully" enough
- Jack Bauer: So basically he came in with the lowest bid and you hired him?
- Graem Bauer: [Nervously] my head was into other things at the time: he came in with good references, I saw no reason not to get "all anal" about it
- Jack Bauer: So these nukes that these terrorists are in possession of, including the one that was just detonated in Valencia, was supplied by McCarthy and stolen from you?
- Graem Bauer: Yes, in a nutshell, that's it
- Jack Bauer: Sam told me dad left yesterday, which means you and he knew about it before today and you didn't report it
- Graem Bauer: We didn't report it because we thought we could take care of it more efficiently
- Jack Bauer: Damn it. Do you know how many people died because you're trying to cover your ass?
- Graem Bauer: I had no idea that this was going to happen. Besides, what dad and I are doing to stop this is more effective than what you and your people are going to do
- Jack Bauer: What "exactly" are you doing?
- Graem Bauer: Dad put together a security team that went out to look for McCarthy
- Jack Bauer: Where?
- Graem Bauer: He was staking out McCarthy's office: checked in about an hour ago
- Jack Bauer: Where is this office?
- Graem Bauer: In Simi
- Jack Bauer: We're going
- Graem Bauer: I'm not leaving my family: not today
- Jack Bauer: Oh, yes you are
- Bill Buchanan: [after Milo enters Bill's office] what is it?
- Milo Pressman: Nadia, she's falling behind on her tasks: what's going on with her?
- Bill Buchanan: Nothing, petition her workload and hand some of it to another analyst
- Milo Pressman: I've only got her working on one process...
- Bill Buchanan: [Interrupts him] she's doing something directly for me, just do it please?
- Milo Pressman: With all due respect, is there something going on here you don't want me to know about?
- Bill Buchanan: Yes, there is: either give Nadia enough time to finish the work or give the work to somebody else
- Milo Pressman: Sir, I'm technical leader on the floor, if you want me to do my job effectively, I need to what's happening
- Bill Buchanan: Because Nadia is of Middle Eastern descent, she's been flagged by Homeland Security
- Milo Pressman: That's ridiculous: she's lived in this country since she was two years old, a registered republican for crying out loud
- Bill Buchanan: You're wasting your breath. There's nothing I can do about this right now, just let it go will you please?
- Milo Pressman: No sir, I don't see how we can just "let it go." Aren't we still trying to find four suitcase nukes that might still be in the city? I need everyone on the floor where I can get full speed
- Bill Buchanan: I understand that now get back to work
- Bill Buchanan: [Over the phone] have you heard this latest mandate from Homeland Security?
- Karen Hayes: No, why? What is it?
- Bill Buchanan: Their racially profiling our own agents
- Karen Hayes: [Shocked] what?
- Bill Buchanan: It just came down from the White House: the problem is one of my best people is "hamstrung." She has to work twice as hard to get through these "security measures"
- Karen Hayes: They're not "security measures", their the paranoid delusions of Tom Lennox
- Bill Buchanan: Is there anything you can do to help?
- Karen Hayes: [Before hanging up] I can talk to the President
- Thomas Lennox: [Talking privately] this simply isn't working for me, I can't have you stand in my way anymore
- Karen Hayes: [Confused] what?
- Thomas Lennox: I need the President's undivided attention and you are frankly, "dividing" it
- Karen Hayes: I'm not going to stop doing my job because it irritates you, I thought I made that perfectly clear?
- Thomas Lennox: [Hands her a piece of paper] I'd like you to tender your resignation
- Karen Hayes: [Amused] My resignation? What are you smoking?
- Thomas Lennox: I'm here to "blow away all the smoke", I want to talk about your husband's incompetence and you're covering it up
- Karen Hayes: I don't like this conversation: what're you talking about?
- Thomas Lennox: Fourteen months ago, we had Abu Fayed in CTU custody in Seattle and Bill Buchanan signed off on his release
- Karen Hayes: I don't believe this. The case you're referring to if I may remember correctly involved over twenty "detainees", not prisoners: detainees and at the time there was not enough evidence to hold him
- Thomas Lennox: It's just a little "grayer" than that isn't it? If what you're saying is true, how come that incident wound up "blue coded" at Homeland in a dead end file? You sequestered that file to protect your husband
- Karen Hayes: [Sternly] I did nothing illegal or incorrect: every single one of those detainees were cleared of any conspiracy charges
- Thomas Lennox: Nevertheless, one of these "detainees" detonated a nuclear bomb in Los Angeles. You think your husband could survive that story? You for that matter...
- Karen Hayes: [Interrupts him] do you want to get in the ring with me? You've got "skeletons" in your closet and I will not hesitate to pull them out
- Thomas Lennox: We've all got our "skeletons." Its proof we don't all have, I've got mine. How long before you get yours?
- Karen Hayes: You're a son of a bitch
- Thomas Lennox: I never claimed otherwise. Look, I'm not out to hurt you or your husband personally I just need room to work, I need your resignation within the hour
- Morris O'Brian: [Sarcastically to Nadia, referring to the speed of her getting her work done] could we go a little slower? There's no rush
- Nadia Yassir: Morris, I'm going as fast as I can: why don't you go back to your station? I'll send it over as soon as I'm ready
- Morris O'Brian: No, I'm curious as to why it's taking you five minutes to do something that should take... ten seconds
- Milo Pressman: [Walking up to them] because I borrowed two of her processors to run a back channel: she's running on twenty percent
- Morris O'Brian: Oh, yeah? Then why didn't "someone" tell me this?
- Milo Pressman: I just did
- Morris O'Brian: [to Nadia while walking away] fine. Don't keep any secrets from me darling, we're all on the same side alright?
- Nadia Yassir: Why'd you lie for me?
- Milo Pressman: I talked to Buchanan
- Nadia Yassir: [Referring to government limiting her access because of her ethnicity] It's frustrating
- Milo Pressman: I'm sorry
- Nadia Yassir: [after he starts typing on the computer] what're you doing?
- Milo Pressman: I'm logging you in under my user ID
- Nadia Yassir: That's illegal
- Milo Pressman: You didn't do it, I did
- Nadia Yassir: Thank you
- Phillip Bauer: I'm doing everything I can to find McCarthy
- Jack Bauer: What the hell are you thinking? Trying to do this on your own?
- Phillip Bauer: I only learned about it yesterday. When Graham told me about the diverted weapons...
- Jack Bauer: [Interrupts him] the second you knew the bombs were missing, why didn't you call the authorities?
- Phillip Bauer: He told me the bombs couldn't be detonated: the triggers were deactivated
- Jack Bauer: He was wrong
- Phillip Bauer: [Referring to Graham] evidently, I'm just trying to keep my son out of prison
- Jack Bauer: Dad, where is McCarthy?
- Phillip Bauer: I don't know. When I do, we can pick him up together
- Graem Bauer: [Enters the room] that's not what he wants dad: he wants both of us in prison
- Jack Bauer: What I want is to find the nukes. If your found accountable for what you've done, that's the "bed you've made"
- Graem Bauer: You hear that dad? You hear that "family love"? We'd be better off if he was still rotting away in a Chinese jail
- Phillip Bauer: [while Jack takes out his cell phone] who are you calling?
- Jack Bauer: CTU
- Phillip Bauer: [Walks closer to him] work with me. I'll tell you what I know. For now, keep Graham out of it. We're talking about prison: he's your brother
- Jack Bauer: Graham knew what he was doing was wrong, he was responsible for those nukes, he should've been more careful. The second he knew they were stolen, he should've reported it
- Graem Bauer: We always do what you should right Jack? How about when dad needed you and you disappeared?
- Phillip Bauer: Come on Jack, give us a chance to clean this up
- Jack Bauer: Dad, there are four other nukes out there. I cannot, I will not be responsible for thousands and thousands of lives just to try and protect this family
- Graem Bauer: Wrong: protecting family is everything and I think your dead wife would agree
