A Note Regarding Spoilers

The following FAQ entries may contain spoilers. Only the biggest ones (if any) will be covered with spoiler tags. Spoiler tags have been used sparingly in order to make the page more readable.

The movie will be based on the first half (or so) of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2007), the last book of the Harry Potter series, written by British author J.K. Rowling. The other books in the series include: (1) Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone in the US) (1997), (2) Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (1998), (3) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (1999), (4) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2000), (5) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2003), and (6) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2005). Rowling's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I was adapted for the screen by American screenwriter Steve Kloves.

Producers previously thought of splitting the Harry Potter books into two parts, but the books were adapted to movies mainly by deleting certain characters and subplots that served as background and were not critical to the plot. The makers felt that this was impossible for Deathly Hallows, as most of the subplots and (seemingly) trivial characters are eventually tied to the conclusion. Also, to give proper closure to each character's story and to the series as a whole, the producer's felt that they should not even try to cram all that information into a single film. Consequently, the decision of a two-parter was made.

About 8 months. Part 1 is to be released November 2010, and Part 2 is to be released July 2011.

The full cast list is available on the movie's main page. Daniel Radcliffe will be back as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger.

(Notes: 1. This is assuming that the split between parts I and II is when Dobby the House Elf helps them escape Malfoy Manor at the end of Chapter 23: Malfoy Manor and the beginning of Chapter 24: The Wandmaker in the book. This has not been confirmed so depending on how they split it depends on if the character appears in part I, part II, or both.

2. All lists are in order of probable appearance.)

Here is a list of the characters that have never been in the film series before, but according to the cast list, WILL be appearing in Part I:

-Young Dumbledore (Toby Regbo) - In his teenage years, Dumbledore forged a friendship with Gellert Grindelwald who he would eventually have to fight against in battle when Grindelwald moves to the Dark Side. In Part I, Regbo is cast as Young Dumbledore and, in Part II, is cast as Teenage Dumbledore.

-Bill Weasley (Domhnall Gleeson) -The eldest child in the Weasley clan and member of the Order of the Phoenix. After being attacked by Fenrir Greyback (who was not in werewolf form at the time), he suffers facial scars and develops some Werewolf tendencies such as a liking for very rare steaks. He is also engaged to Fleur Delacour. He was a protector to the fake Harry Potter Fleur flying on a thestral in the Battle over Little Whinging. He also opened his and Fleurs cottage as a place of refuge for victims of the Wizarding War and was present in the Battle of Hogwarts.

-Gregorovitch (Rade Serbedzija) - Bulgarian wandmaker.

-Rufus Scrimgeour, Minister for Magic (Bill Nighy) - Bill Nighy was actually David Yates first choice to play the Minister in The Half-Blood Prince, but he couldn't work Scrimgeour into the script. Nevertheless he will be in this movie.

-Albert Runcorn (David O'Hara) - He is a ministry official whom Harry disguises himself as. He has turned in several Muggle-borns for investigation by the Muggle-born Registration Commission, including Dirk Creswell and Mary Cattermole. He is described as tall, bearded, and with curly black hair.

-Gellert Grindelwald (Jamie Campbell Bower) - Dark wizard, who has only been mentioned in The Sorcerer's Stone. It is not yet known if Bower will be portraying Young Grindelwald or Old Grindelwald as both may be in the film. He very well could portray both, and it looks like he will considering that he is cast for both films.

-Xenophilius Lovegood (Rhys Ifans) - Luna Lovegood's eccentric father and editor of The Quibbler. He is a guest at Bill and Fleur's wedding and there is a scene where the trio visits him in his house to find out information about the Deathly Hallows.

-Molly Weasley (Julie Walters) - Was absent in The Goblet of Fire. She is a member of the Order of the Phoenix and mother of the Weasleys. She greatly fears for the safety of her family as they become more and more wrapped up in the Wizarding War. She is also present in the Battle of Hogwarts.

He is the goblin who brought Rubeus Hagrid and Harry Potter to their vaults in Gringotts Wizarding Bank in The Sorcerer's Stone. He is a former employee of Gringotts and may or may not be trustworthy. In this movie he will be played both physically and verbally by Warwick Davis. In the first film, Davis only provide his voice and he was physically played by Verne Troyer. However, Davis is perfectly adept to portray Griphook physically because, in the first film, he portrayed a Goblin Bank Teller

Peeves The Poltergeist- A mischievious "Ghost" residing in Hogwarts, he was never shown in the movies due to his scenes in the first 2 being cut (They are being reinstated for the Ultimate Editions due out in December) He will be played by Rik Mayell, who played him in the first two movies.

Below is a list of characters that have yet to be cast or may not appear at all in Part I:

-Percival Dumbledore - He could appear in a scene but he most likely will just appear in a portrait. He is Albus Dumbledore's father.

-Young Elphias Doge

-Young Aberforth Dumbledore

-Kendra Dumbledore

-Mary Cattermole

Well, only one scene has been officially confirmed, and that is the Battle of Hogwarts. However, if you look at the cast list, you can pretty much tell from that what scenes are most likely in the film. Rufus Scrimgeour features, so his one scene in the book is most likely featured in the film. 'Mad-Eye' Moody also had only one scene in the book, so you can probably assume that the "7 Potters" chase is in. Dolores Umbridge is in the film, so you can probably assume that one or both of her two scenes at the Ministry are featured. Bill and Fluer are both in, so most likely, their wedding and scenes later will feature. Mundungus Fletcher will be introduced, so his one scene from the book will probably be in. Aberforth is in, so his scenes near the end are most likely in. Albus Dumbledore will be in, so the King's Cross scene will probably be in. Rita Skeeter is in, so her interview at the beginning may be featured. Xenophilius Lovegood is in, so one or both of his 2 scenes are almost definitely in.

Bathilda Bagshot is introduced, so it's almost a definite 'yes' on the Godric's Hollow scene. Percy Weasley is coming back, so his scenes at the Ministry and at Hogwarts later on will probably feature. Ollivander and Dobby are both finally returning to the series, so their scenes at Malfoy Manor & Bill's cottage will more than likely be featured. Griphook is returning, so his role in the Gringotts break-in will probably feature. Kreacher is coming back, so his roles at Grimmauld Place & at Hogwarts at the end will probably feature. Dedalus Diggle is also in, so you can probably assume that the Dursleys are returning, though it hasn't been officially confirmed. Ted Tonks is in, so his two scenes may be featured.

David Yates will direct both adaptations of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Sources: here, here, and here.

Producer David Heyman has, in answer to a question put to him, said that if John Williams is free and if they can arrange it, "and that's a big if", they will have him return. Williams said he is confident he will return for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but there is not yet an official announcement made by Warner Bros or by Williams himself. For details, see here.

Although it seems that Part II will be the last movie of the series, this has not been confirmed. J.K. Rowling completed the last Harry Potter book in 2007. Though she says "never say never", it has not yet been confirmed that a possible eighth Harry Potter book will be written. Rowling said she might write an encyclopedia with information not provided in the first seven books. Rumors are circulating that Warner Brothers is looking for a way to make a motion picture out of Rowling's book Tales of Beedle the Bard (2008). If Tales of Beedle the Bard movie is going to be made, it probably will not star Daniel Radcliffe or Rupert Grint, since they do not appear in the book. Hermione is responsible for the translation of the text, and so Emma Watson could feature.

How long in filming?

392 days, which is about 13 months.

Yes! The first & second will be both in IMAX with select scenes in IMAX 3D or completely 2D.
