The actor answers your questions, from his memorable impersonation of a sloth at Rada to what it was like having to execute one of his son’s best friends
I’ve heard there’s a module at Rada about becoming the embodiment of an animal. Legend has it you were incredible and people would strive to witness it. What animal were you and what process did you go through? spikeboy
I remember I wasn’t that particularly keen on it, so I think I was a sloth so I could just curl up in the corner and pretend I was on a tree and just shift up a bit every 20 minutes. We had a wonderful teacher but I’d had enough of some of the more modern dance stuff, so I used the animal thing as an exercise in having a bit of a kip.
We really enjoyed the Turner and Lowry films.

Independent production company overwhelmed by debt.
Ben Affleck, Charlize Theron and Paul Walker are among the stars whose unpaid fees contributed to spiralling debts which eventually brought down Media 8. Yesterday I got to meet ad interview new upcoming talent, Aneurin Banard for his new movie, Elfie Hopkins where he plays a geek opposite non-geek Jamie Winstone (it’ll go live next week). I then get home only to find that the man who I tipped for great things has been cast in this brand new movie opposite the likes of Michael Sheen, Lena Headey, Sam Neill, Ioan Gruffudd and Keeley Hawes. Aneurin will play the lead in this latest film called Mariah Mundi and the Midas Box which is based on the teen adventure series by G.P. Taylor.
Exciting news for him and we look forward to seeing more info from it when it’s released. In the meantime though, here’s the press release with all the ins and outs that you need to know!

Twenty years ago, a pair of films – Slacker and Straight Out of Brooklyn – began a brief and bright boom time for microbudget film-making, when several films seemingly costing peanuts and paid for on credit cards became sizable commercial hits. Last week, Ryan Gilbey set about finding what had become of that first wave of microbudget directors.
Since Ryan had answered his own question, the readers embarked on a wider discussion of the microbudget phenomenon. "The new wave are making films on smartphones, particularly the iPhone 4 and Nokia N8," wrote smartmoviemaker. "Park Chan-Wook, director of Oldboy, made Paranmanjang entirely on an iPhone 4 and it was shown in South Korean cinemas … Britain's McHenry Brothers, who made the spoof Jackboots on Whitehall last year, made a short on a Nokia N8 called The Commuter, starring Pamela Anderson."

The Film:
You’re first reaction might be on Jackboots On Whitehall is that this is just a British version of Team America: World Police, and while that reference isn’t entirely wrong, it’s not entirely accurate either. Where as Team America was largely a satirical spoof of our country’s policies, Jackboots On Whitehall is that dry British humor that is interwoven in an imaginary version of The Battle of Britain, if Britain lost. But it’s all told with puppets for some long lost Thunderbirds action while Hitler has invaded Britain and wears Elizabeth I’s dress, Winston Churchill is chomping his cigar to kick some Nazi ass, and it’s a wacky, fun, dry look at WWII.
Directors McHenry Brothers lovingly craft this world of puppet action, miniatures, and explosions, for some of the best puppetry around. The script is scatter-shot though. While it takes aim...

Ironclad - James Purefoy (Solomon Kane) carries this actioner about a ragtag group of Knights Templar who hold out for months against the hard-fought siege of Rochester Castle in the thirteenth Century. Set in the time of King John's signing of the Magna Carta treaty, the group struggles against the King to defend the freedom of their country.
Source Code - For his sophomore film, Moon director Duncan Jones creates a multiple-reality/time traveling twister of a film that is both thematically and viscerally exciting. The film is about a helicopter pilot who is recruited for a top-secret military operation and finds himself on a startlingly different kind of mission that challenges our assumptions about time and space.

I had seen it before, I knew how the mystery ended and it runs seven minutes shy of two-and-a-half-hours... I watched the entire film. It's simply excellent, but more importantly,...

Title: Jackboots on Whitehall Director: Edward & Rory McHenry Starring: Ewan McGregor, Rosamund Pike, Richard Griffiths, Alan Cumming, Tom Wilkinson, Richard O’Brien, Timothy Spall, Dominic West and Richard E. Grant Running time: 91 minutes, Unrated A British satirical take on what if the Nazi’s invaded England during World War II and the English have to band together with the help of Scottish highlanders, a Frenchman and an American pilot who thinks he’s battling Russia….and the actors are all puppets. Like most people, I loved Team America; however this was not even in the same league. It looked like a long…long episode of Robot Chicken, but with a bigger budget. All...

The hilarious World War 2 satire, ‘Jackboots on Whitehall’ is making its way to DVD on July 26th, as well as VOD! On July 26, New Video’s Flatiron Film Company will boldly release this World War II farce, Jackboots on Whitehall, for the first time in the U.S. across cable VOD, digital platforms and DVD.
The world’s future is in their tiny plastic hands.
World War II: What if Nazis seized London and all of England had to band together? When scarily campy Nazi leaders invade by drilling under the English Channel and up through the cobblestones on Whitehall, Churchill leaves his quiet retirement with a cat that looks like Hitler to issue a call to arms from his bunker under Downing Street. Chris, a young farm worker with large hands, rallies the village to fight the good fight — including an alcoholic Vicar, the oldest man in the town, several idiots, a random Frenchman and Bobby Fiske, a swearing American who believes he’s battling Russia.

Jackboots on Whitehall isn’t exactly news. Released in the United Kingdom on October, 2010, it was the first film of its kind to feature animatronic puppets and the voices of well-known British actors including Ewan McGregor, Rosamund Pike, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Tom Wilkinson, Timothy Spall, Richard O’Brien and Richard Griffiths. The satirical film took place in an alternate history of the Second World War, in which Nazi Germany have seized London, causing the British to band together at Hadrian’s Wall to tey and thwart the German invasion. Produced by Karl Richards of U.K. production outfit, Entertainment Motion Pictures (E-Motion), the film boasts pioneering techniques in animation, fusing innovative puppeteering animatronics developed by Rory McHenry and visual effects by Mfx London. Executive Producers are Nigel Thomas and Charlotte Walls of Matador Pictures.

This year opened on a sad note indeed with the death of Pete Postlethwaite, star of The Usual Suspects, The Lost World and the underrated 90s British gem Brassed Off, whom Spielberg once called "the best actor in the world". A stalwart and often admirably brusque presence, Postlethwaite always brought something special to the screen, even when the films in which he appeared (such generic remakes as Dark Water, The Omen and Clash of the Titans) were unremarkable.
In the Boston-set thriller The Town (2010, Warner, 15), Postlethwaite plays a comparatively small role as sinister florist-cum-crime boss Fergie, whose malign influence seeps through the crime-breeding neighbourhood of Charlestown. Director Ben Affleck, who proved his mettle behind the camera with Gone Baby Gone, stars as disenchanted bank robber Doug MacRay, whose attempts to discover how much a witness (Rebecca Hall) knows...

[Editor's note: If anyone says 2010 was a sh!% year for movies, please refer them to this post.]
Instead of the usual "best" or "worst" films of the year lists, I thought a good way to take a look at the highs and lows of the 2010 film year would be to compile almost every single review we published in 2010 and let readers meander through the wasteland as it were.
I'm really amazed at the range of films we managed to cover from around the globe this year. Quiet Earth has certainly come a long way over the years and it's really due to the talents and passion of our team of writers who literally travel a world of fests to bring news and reviews of new films.
I hope you're all taking notes. Many of these films were from fests and will probably be hitting VOD and Blu-ray sometime in the new year, so this is a good chance to get a start on your must-watch lists.

Initially, I could only think of a few real stand-out films of this last year, until I trawled through the UK release list for 2010 and found myself with a long list of twenty-three films, which by my reckoning means that on average, there’s been a great film in cinemas just less than once a fortnight, which seems pretty good going to me.
Here then, are my top ten followed by, in no particular order, a list of thirteen honourable mentions.
1. Bad Lieutenant
When Nicolas Cage met Werner Herzog the result was this bizarre and exciting film, which lit a firework under the arse of the crime genre and ran off giggling manically.
2. Inception
Christopher Nolan delivered yet another cinematic tour de force with this visually rich and debate-starting spectacle.
3. The Secret in Their Eyes
Winner of last year’s Oscar for best foreign feature, this slow-burning, generation-spanning whodunit was captivating and moving.

This powerful frontline Afghanistan doc has been compared to a real-life Hurt Locker but here, war is all difficulty and very little glory. Closely observing a Us company in the hostile Korengal Valley, it's a mix of tense combat, bunker downtime and tricky "hearts and minds" local engagement efforts, interspersed with moving post-combat reflection. It all leaves you with a great deal of respect for the soldiers, and very little for the people who put them there.

When you watch the opening scene of the McHenry brothers debut feature you’ll no doubt be thinking ‘what the hell is this?’ But stick with it because Jackboots On Whitehall is an eccentric and inventive satire which will you grow on you, I promise.
Yes, the puppetry and animation is rather creepy and the lack of expression and movement at odds with the voice work, but the sheer barminess and arduous task of directing something like this shouldn’t be dismissed. Mercilessly toying with stereotypes and referencing everything from George Orwell’s essay The Lion and The Unicorn, the films of Powell and Pressburger, Humphrey Jennings stirring propaganda work and Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, the one liners and situations come thick and fast. It’s an utterly bizarre ‘toy story’ which will certainly be compared to Team America: World Police, but shouldn’t.

Effectively the bastard child of Team America and an Adam and Joe pastiche short, Jackboots on Whitehall has enough heart and humour to overcome its weak points.
The directorial debut of co-directors/writers and brothers Ed ad Rory McHenry, this animated comedy reimagines the second world war and throws in a heap of national stereotypes, in-jokes and swearing for good measure.
The Vertigo Films production follows the epic quest of a group of Kent villagers to survive the Nazi invasion of Britain – yes, you read that right – and keep Britain free.
Led by big-handed farm boy Chris (with Ewan McGregor using ‘why employ English, when you can get me?’ vocal stylings), the villagers are joined by the irascible Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall), cocky Us pilot Fiske (Dominic West) and the remaining ranks of the Punjabi Guard (led...

FilmShaft saw the McHenry brothers debut feature, Jackboots on Whitehall, a few weeks ago and it’s deeply eccentric, to say the least. Given that it features plastic toy puppets in a spoof-filled plot, you’d be forgiven in uttering the words “Team America: World Police”.
However, this takes a thoroughly British route and involves pot-shots at everything from Mel Gibson’s Scottish accent in Braveheart to the films of Powell and Pressburger.
The film is essentially a lunatic re-writing of history involving the Nazis invading Britain during WW2. Oh, and Winston Churchill fires a machine gun and there’s an epic battle at Hadrian’s Wall involving super-vixen Nazi ladies. To put it bluntly, it’s completely crackers.
Although it might go over the heads of some, but it’s a clever little movie that clearly was bloody hard to make and features a fine vocal cast, including: Ewan McGregor,...

It would be easy to call Jackboots On Whitehall 'the British version of Team America', and that's because, well, it is, kind of. Want proof? Well, here's an exclusive poster of it, just for you.If you haven't seen the trailer already, Jackboots On Whitehall tells the fantastical tale of how the Germans attacked Britain and actually made it over the border, forcing us Brits to peg it back to Hadrians' wall, it's mad, bad, and made of plastic toys. There's Hitler dressed as Queenie from Blackadder II, Winston Churchill packing an assault rifle, and they've only gone and put Swastikas on Whitehall and The Houses Of Parliament... this is just not on.It also boasts the vocal stylings of some of British's most respected actors, actresses and comedy people, including Ewan McGregor, Rosamund Pike, Timothy Spall, Alan Cumming, Stephen Merchant and Richard E. Grant.Interested? Intrigued? Worried it will...

London's indie film festival, Raindance, has announced its 2010 line-up, a 77-film strong line-up featuring some of independent cinema's finest. Raindance kicks off on September 29 with Jackboots On Whitehall, a satirical animation set in an alternative world in which Nazis occupy London and the good folk of England must rally together to give them the boot. Its voicecast, reading like a who's who of British acting talent, features Richard Griffiths, Tom Wilkinson, Richard E. Grant, Timothy Spall and him off The Crystal Maze, Richard O'Brien. Festivities wrap up a week and a half later with Son Of Babylon, an Iraqi drama that's already won silverware at the Sundance and Berlin film festivals. Between the two comes a wealth of indie goodness, and, in the case of A Serbian Film, badness. Srdjan Spasojevic's controversial film is currently banned from public screening but will get an uncut private screening at the festival. Be...

UK's largest indie gathering will screen A Serbian Film, which features necrophilia and rape, and a banned gay zombie porno
Controversy looks set to reign at this year's Raindance film festival after organisers announced they will screen a number of highly contentious films over the event's 11-day run, which begins later this month.
Among the features that will show at the festival are first-time director Srdjan Spasojevic's horror picture A Serbian Film, which has been widely criticised for scenes involving paedophilia, necrophilia, rape and incest and was pulled from last month's FrightFest in response to the extent of the cuts demanded by the British Board of Film Classification and Westminster council. With FrightFest's organisers protesting that "a film of this nature should be shown in its entirety", Raindance appears to have found a way around the ban by billing the screening as a "private event".

Jackboots On Whitehall
Stars (the voices of): Ewan McGregor, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Timothy Spall, Alan Cumming, Stephen Merchant, Sanjeev Bhaskar | Written and Directed by Edward & Rory McHenry
The simplest way to describe Jackboots on Whitehall is as a World War 2 Team America. Set in an alternate history where the English soldiers have not been rescued at Dunkirk and taking its cues from the comic book heroes of the era, Jackboots is an anarchic comedy that proves very hard to dislike.
After losing their land and air forces, England is invaded by the Nazis, led by the high camp trio of Goebbels, Himmler and Goering, when they tunnel under the channel and emerge in Trafalgar Square, with an aim to capture Winston Churchill and put him in a cage. Clearly realism, sensitivity and political correctness were far from the top of the priority list. It’s left to simple farm boy Christopher,...

Edward and Rory McHenry’s deliriously entertaining WW2 historical fiction, puppet animation begins with a desperate battle for Britain over the skies of Dover, as Spitfires and Messerschmitt blast bursts of machine gun fire and explode mid-flight. Soon the Nazi war machine reaches the shores of England and the good people of God’s own green and fertile land will have to mount a resistance to the menacing Hun, who have tunnelled under London for a blitzkrieg attack!
Brought to us in “Glorious Panzervision”, Jackboots On Whitehall is possibly the best film at the Eiff this year for sheer entertainment value. It’s a real gem with a dozen jokes a minute and a sense of fun and knockabout silliness that’s rare and immensely enjoyable, and as a debut feature from animation enthusiasts,...

It's got a dose of Team America. A bit of Braveheart. Nazis invading London. And a whole host of laughs. Carl checks out Jackboots On Whitehall...
What would you get if you crossed World War II films, Team America, Robot Chicken and Braveheart? Well, you would probably get Jackboots On Whitehall.
Using puppetry and computer animation, we are told a ‘what if' story about Nazis invading London and taking over. However, it has humble beginnings, as it starts on a village on the English coast which is having a fair. Here we learn all about a lot of the main characters, including the lead, a large-handed man named Chris, voiced by Ewan McGregor, who always feels a bit like an outcast because he is different. We also get to meet a few others who play big parts in the story, including Daisy (Rosamund Pike), The Vicar (Richard E Grant) and Tom (Stephen Merchant).

Memo to The Weinstein Co.: given that Shanghai won last week's Trailer Park poll with a whopping 62% of the votes, I think it's only fair necessary that you finally distribute the film. As soon as possible. Second place in the poll, at 10%, was Morning Glory, proving that some people want to see Indiana Jones verbally whip Annie Hall.
This week there are a few too many repeat, as in second version, trailers for films we've looked at in the past. Dinner With Schmucks, The Expendables and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, of course. If there’s one thing this world is sorely lacking, it’s war movies populated with puppets. Directors Edward and Rory McHenry attempt to rectify this glaring cinematic problem with “Jackboots on Whitehall”, a World War II fantasy flick which finds a group of ordinary freedom-fighting farmers battling an evil Nazi battalion that’s attempting to invade London by drilling under the English Channel. The entire action-packed adventure is packed to the rafters with state-of-the-art puppetry, and is voiced by the likes of Ewan McGregor, Tom Wilkinson, Alan Cumming, Richard E. Grant, and Timothy Spall. Those lucky sons of guns who are attending the Edinburgh International Film Festival this year should definitely consider show up for film’s debut, especially if the feature is as entertaining as the trailer embedded below. Super huge high-fives to Twitch for bringing the trailer to the masses.

Two highly-anticipated second feature films from U.S. underground filmmakers will be making their World Premieres all the way over at the 64th annual Edinburgh International Film Festival, which will run for twelve days on June 16-27. The films are Rona Mark’s The Crab and Zach Clark’s Vacation!.
The Crab, which screens on June 21, is the touching story of a verbally abusive man born with two enormous, mutant-like hands; while Vacation!, which screens on June 20, tracks four urban gals let loose in a sunny seaside resort down South.
Both Mark and Clark previously screened their debut features at Eiff. Mark’s Strange Girls screened there in 2008 and Clark’s Modern Love Is Automatic screened in 2009. Both films also ended up as runners-up in Bad Lit’s annual Movie of the Year award, again Strange Girls in 2008 and Modern Love in 2009. Sadly, these two masterpieces are still unavailable on...

What if Team America: World Police were British, took place during World War II, and was totally serious? Well...more serious. Ok, fine, what if Team America was British and set in WWII? You might have something like Jackboots on Whitehall, which tells the story of an alternate WWII in which Goering, Goebbels and Himmler plan to tunnel under the English Channel and into the heart of London in order to capture Britain while the country's army is elsewhere. A small group of villagers represent the last line of defense against the Nazis. Who says Inglorious Basterds has a lock on revisionist war history? I would like to begin by stating clearly that when I refer to 'puppet Nazis' I do not refer to Nazi collaborators who simply bend to the will of their distant overlords. Those are Nazi puppets. No, I mean puppets - actual, literal puppets - who are Nazis. And in the case of the McHenry Brothers' Jackboots On Whitehall, those evil puppet Nazis have successfully invaded Britain and it is up to a small band of farmers to save the day.

Jackboots on Whitehall is a satirical alternative history of WWII from the McHenry Brothers.
